SINGAPORE: An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to two years and three months in jail and three strokes of the cane in Singapore after pleading guilty to a rioting charge connected to a fatal brawl at a nightspot in 2023. Kavind was part of an 11 member group, referred to in court documents as the "rioting group." Isrrat died after being repeatedly stabbed with a knife by another member of the group, Asvain Pachan Pillai Sukumaran, who was 30 at the time. Asvain has been charged with murder, and his case is still pending. Other members of the group have already been handed jail sentences and caning. During sentencing, defence lawyers for Kavind asked for a jail term of up to two years and two months along with caning. "(Isrrat) himself began the fracas with vulgarities being hurled at the accused's group," said Kavind's lawyers according to PTI.
