Chorlton cemetery becomes Manchester's latest local nature reserve
It is the largest municipal cemetery in the UK and the second largest in Europe. Local nature reserves are sites that contain wildlife and/or geological features that are of specific local interest.The section of the old part of the cemetery designated a local nature reserve excludes areas which are in current use for burials or storage.It follows Broadhurst Clough in Moston which was made the 10th nature reserve in the city in March 2023.
'Flourishing'
Councillor Tracey Rawlins said: "Green spaces across our city have a vital role to play in our wellbeing and we are determined to support and celebrate biodiversity in these special places."Local Nature Reserves are selected because of their rich flora and fauna but also their strong friends group which show how much they mean to the community."Councillor Lee-Ann Igbon added: "Southern Cemetery is a flourishing and well-loved green space that rightly deserves its Local Nature Reserve status to go alongside the Green Flag it already has in recognition of how well-managed it is."

Mountain fire in Gwent reported after ‘fifth fire' in area
In the Facebook group Blaenavon and Beyond local Stuart Baldwin posted: 'Looks like a fire at the old drift mine on the Coity, fire service are enroute hope they get to it before it spread.' Jane Rawlings said: 'Fingers crossed it's out quickly.' Tina Ann said: 'Oh no! Hope they manage to put it out quickly!' South Wales Fire and Rescue Service were contacted for further update. They said: 'There was a fire in the quarry. 'It's been left to burn as it's in an inaccessible area. There is no danger to life or property, but fire crews were unable to reach the area.' South Wales Fire and Rescue service received the call to Llanover road to an extinguished fire at an unattended campfire. A spokesperson said: 'SWFRS received a call at approximately 21:00 on 26/06/2025 to reports of a fire near Llanover road. 'One crew and appliance from Blaenavon attended the scene and extinguished the fire, an unattended campfire, using a knapsack sprayer and two beaters. 'STOP message received at approximately 21:21.'

However, Diane Hart, dog rehabilitator partnering with The Pettifor Trust, has revealed that owners themselves could be the root of the problem. Diane emphasises that owners often unintentionally cause harm by treating their dogs like human children. Dogs, she explains, need to understand their place at the bottom of the "pack" to feel comfortable and secure. When a dog is at the top of the hierarchy, they may begin to assert dominance, even over children. This is especially true if the parents are strong "alphas" and the child is not, leading to the dog potentially going after anyone who touches the child. Offering up her simple fix, Diane advises: "Don't treat your dog like a child, you have to respect the dog for what it is. "The dog, in order to be comfortable, has to be at the bottom of the pack. If you put them at the top of the pack, they will start bossing the kids around." On training and leadership, she adds: "Owners need to learn to be a pack leader, by being consistent. Once the owner shows they can take control of their dog, the dog will listen." Dogs are also deeply sensitive to their human companions, with their behaviour often mirroring the owner's temperament. Diane says that many dogs arriving in her care demonstrate issues directly linked to their previous home environments. Many dogs display anxiety, reactivity, or withdrawal due to picking up on their owner's mood or stress. Border Collies, in particular, are highly sensitive to their surroundings and human energy. Originally bred for rural life, they can be noise sensitive and do not thrive in overly loud or chaotic environments, such as homes with constant shouting or screaming children. Their needs for extensive exercise arevery important, and a lack of this - coupled with frequent owner absence - can lead to severe separation anxiety and hyperactiveness. Common behavioural issues often stem from a lack of consistent love and control within the household. This can manifest as anxiety, nipping, pacing, and lunging at people. Diane said: "I believe 100% a dog is a mirror image of yourself; if you are hyperactive, your Collie will be the same.

Eighteen Sheffield parks win Green Flag awards
Sheffield has been named as one of England's greenest cities after almost 20 of its parks and woodlands won coveted Green Flag Britain Tidy handed out 18 Green Flags to public spaces in Sheffield in 2024-5 - more than were won by Nottingham, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool or Flags recognise parks that are well-maintained and managed for both users and achievement was reported to Sheffield City Council's communities, parks and leisure committee this week. The council's ambition is for all publicly accessible green open space under its stewardship to meet the standard by target set for 2025-26 is 88%.
