British Open joins U.S. Open in offering direct pathway for LIV golfers

Fox News11-02-2025
The British Open has joined the U.S. Open in offering a direct pathway for players from the breakaway LIV Golf circuit to get into the field for this year's major championship.
The leading player not already exempt in the top five of LIV's individual standings following its tournament in Dallas in late June will be awarded a spot at the world's oldest major taking place at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland the following month, the R&A said Monday.
The decision followed an annual review of the Open's exemptions "to ensure that we offer pathways into the Championship based on results achieved on the leading professional tours," R&A chief executive Mark Darbon said.
The U.S. Open announced last week it was awarding one spot to the leading player from among the top three at LIV's halfway point this year.
"We acknowledge that players competing in LIV Golf should also have the opportunity to secure places in the Open through its individual season standings as well as existing pathways," Darbon said.
"We are proud to offer a wide range of opportunities to qualify globally and look forward to seeing which golfers will emerge to take their place at Royal Portrush in July."

LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil said the R&A's decision was a "true testament to the strength of fields and the R&A's commitment to golf fans around the world."
"LIV will continue our mission to bring the best players to the four corners of the world to grow the game. We are excited for the future of this great sport."
The R&A also is using an Asian Tour International Series event (Macau) as part of its Open Qualifying Series that provides spots for the top finishers. LIV provides financial backing for the International Series, and several LIV players often compete in them.
The R&A took away a spot for the Asian Tour money winner in 2022, about the time LIV got involved in the circuit. The previous two years, regular Asian Tour events were used for the Open Qualifying Series.
The Saudi-controlled LIV circuit already has 12 players who are exempt or have qualified for Portrush on July 17-20, including major champions and past Open winners such as Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith.
LIV began its fourth season last week at Riyadh Golf Club in Saudi Arabia, where Adrian Meronk won, and goes to Australia this week.
There are 14 events in total on its 2025 schedule.

AJ Capital acquires 2 North Carolina golf hotels

This story was originally published on Hotel Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Hotel Dive newsletter. AJ Capital Partners acquired the Mid Pines Inn and Pine Needles Lodge in Southern Pines, North Carolina, according to an announcement Thursday. The Nashville, Tennessee-based real estate and hospitality firm plans to renovate and convert the properties under its golf-focused Marine & Lawn Hotels & Resorts brand. The 1920s-era sister properties sit beside championship golf courses Mid Pines and Pine Needles. AJ Capital plans to restore and renovate both hotels, as well as add new dining concepts. The acquisitions are part of a broader expansion of the U.K.-based Marine & Lawn brand, which is also growing its footprint in Scotland. Mid Pines Inn and Pine Needles Lodge are Marine & Lawn's first properties in the U.S. Marine & Lawn 'takes a refined approach to hospitality, design, world-renowned dining, and prime access to some of the world's most prestigious golf courses,' according to AJ Capital. With the recent additions — which include the acquisition of the historic Greywalls Hotel in Scotland — Marine & Lawn will boast eight properties across the U.K. and the U.S. AJ Capital CEO and founder Ben Weprin said the acquisitions represent 'a pivotal milestone for Marine & Lawn.' 'Since launching the brand in 2019, our ambition has always been to honor golf's most legendary locales with world-class hospitality,' Weprin said in a statement, noting that the addition of these properties allows the firm 'to bring that vision to life on both sides of the Atlantic.' AJ Capital Partners developed and launched the Graduate Hotels brand, which Hilton acquired last year. AJ Capital continues to own real estate assets belonging to its Graduate Hotels brand, which Hilton is now expanding. Hilton named former Graduate Hotels President Kevin Osterhaus its president of global lifestyle brands last year. Elsewhere in the U.S., Dream Golf is developing a 2,400-acre golf-focused resort in East Texas. Sports-related travel is on the rise, hospitality pros told Hotel Dive earlier this year.

Charles Barkley holes out for eagle in career-best round at American Century Championship: 'I'm gunning for Steph Curry'

The days of mocking Charles Barkley's golf game appear to be truly over. The NBA Hall of Famer and TNT broadcaster made his usual entry in the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament this week and posted the best round of his career in the first round at Nevada's Edgewood Tahoe Resort. Advertisement "I'm gunning for Steph Curry," Barkley said to Yahoo Sports after the match. Playing alongside comedians Nate Bargatze and Larry the Cable Guy, he shot an 81 for the day, with the 54-hole tournament's modified Stableford scoring system placing him in a tie for 24th in a 90-player field. That performance included him holing out for an eagle, cheered on by a supportive crowd. "The crowd was going crazy, man. It was unbelievable. It's been a great day," Barkley told the Peacock stream. "I thought I would play. I didn't think I would play this well ... I'm having so much fun. I've been working so hard on my game." Advertisement Put another way, Barkley was in the top third of a group of people that included several professional athletes, including Josh Allen (tied for 31st), Matthew Tkachuk (40th), Zach Lavine (59th), Baker Mayfield (75th) and Trevor Lawrence (86th). San Jose Sharks great Joe Pavelski leads the field after shooting a 70, with Curry right behind him in third. By comparison, Barkley finished in 58th place among 54-hole golfers in the 2024 tournament, 81st in 2023, 74th in 2022, 76th in 2021, 88th in 2019 and dead last in 2018. He also finished last in 2017, 2016, 2014, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006. It is a testament to patience and perseverance, not to mention love for a sport which requires both, that a man is looking at the majority of the field behind him in an event where he has finished last that many times. Many fans will remember just how bad this used to be. In case you need a reminder, here is one of his better swings from around 2010. With the mother of all swing hitches — some would just call it the yips — Barkley was so bad at golf that Tiger Woods' swing coach Hank Haney was enlisted to help him out. This man went on Saturday Night Live and let them mock his swing to his face. Advertisement His swing gradually improved over the years. He showed off a hitch-less swing in 2018 and even played on the winning team in an iteration of The Match in 2020 (with some help from Phil Mickelson). Barkley, whose "Inside the NBA" will transition from TNT to ESPN next season, always took his struggles with public good humor and even managed to find a niche as a golf broadcaster to the point he had an offer to help call LIV Golf events. And now, he's actually posted a decent round.

Division-I head football coach qualifies for his state amateur

Tulsa isn't bringing back men's golf until next year, but one of its own has just qualified for one of the top tournaments in the state. That player also happens to be the Golden Hurricane's head football coach. Advertisement Tre Lamb shot 3-over 75 Thursday at Forest Ridge in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, to qualify for the Oklahoma State Amateur. The 35-year-old Lamb, who was hired in December after leading Gardner-Webb to its first Big South title in almost two decades, went out in even-par 36 before carding a bounce-back birdie, his second of the day, at the par-4 15th following a two-hole stretch of bogey-double. Lamb now advances to the championship, which is set for July 21-24 at Cedar Ridge Country Club, also in Broken Arrow. The tournament features 18 holes of stroke play followed by a 32-man match-play bracket.
