Car bombing kills 13 Pakistani soldiers near Afghan border, say sources
DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan - An explosive-laden car rammed into a Pakistani military convoy on Saturday in a town near the Afghan border, killing at least 13 soldiers, sources said.
Four Pakistani intelligence officials and a senior local administrator told Reuters that the convoy was attacked in Mir Ali area of North Waziristan district.
Around 10 other soldiers were wounded, some critically, and they were being airlifted to a military hospital, the sources said.
"It was huge, a big bang," said the local administrator, adding that residents of the town could see a large amount of smoke billowing from the scene from a great distance.
One resident said that the explosion rattled the windowpanes of nearby houses, and caused some roofs to collapse.
No one has so far claimed responsibility.
The Pakistani military did not respond to a Reuters request for a comment.
The lawless district which sits next to Afghanistan has long served as a safe haven for different Islamist militant groups, who operate on both sides of the border.
Islamabad says the militants run training camps in Afghanistan to launch attacks inside Pakistan, a charge Kabul denies, saying the militancy is Pakistan's domestic issue.
Pakistani Taliban also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an umbrella group of several Islamist militant groups, has long been waging a war against Pakistan in a bid to overthrow the government and replace it with its own Islamic system of governance.
The Pakistani military, which has launched several offensives against the militants, has mostly been their prime target. REUTERS

In a statement, the ministry said that an 'Israeli enemy' drone strike on a car in Kunin, south Lebanon, killed one man in a preliminary toll. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the incident. The attack comes a day after Israel killed a woman and wounded 25 other people in strikes across the country's south. Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported that the woman was killed in an Israeli drone strike on an apartment in the city of Nabatiyeh. Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee said on social media that the army 'did not target any civilian building'. The attacks on June 27 included a 'wave of successive heavy strikes' in the Nabatiyeh region which injured seven people, according to the NNA. The Israeli military said it 'identified rehabilitation attempts made by Hezbollah beforehand and struck terror infrastructure sites in the area'. Mr Adraee said the civilian building 'was hit by a rocket that was inside the (fire and defence array) site and launched and exploded as a result of the strike'. Israel has repeatedly bombed its northern neighbour despite the November ceasefire that aimed to end over a year of hostilities with Hezbollah. Under the ceasefire deal, Hezbollah was to pull its fighters back north of the Litani river, some 30 kilometres from the Israeli border, leaving the Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeepers as the only armed parties in the region. Israel was required to fully withdraw its troops from the country but has kept them in five locations in south Lebanon that it deems strategic. PHOTO: AFP Six Israelis detained for attacking soldiers in West Bank: Military JERUSALEM - Six Israelis were detained for assaulting soldiers near a town in the occupied West Bank where clashes with Palestinians erupted earlier this week, the military said on June 28. Soldiers went to disperse a gathering of Israelis near the central West Bank town of Kafr Malik overnight from June 27 to June 28, the military said in a statement. 'Upon the arrival of the security forces, dozens of Israeli civilians hurled stones toward them and physically and verbally assaulted the soldiers, including the Battalion Commander,' it said. 'In addition, the civilians vandalised and damaged security forces' vehicles, and attempted to ram the security forces,' it added. 'The security forces dispersed the gathering, and six Israeli civilians were apprehended and transferred to the Israel Police for further processing.' Contacted by AFP, the Israeli military declined to say whether those arrested were residents of Israeli settlements in the territory, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967. The military referred the query to the Israeli police, which was not available to comment. In a separate incident on June 25, the Palestinian health ministry said three men died in Kafr Malik in an attack by settlers. AFP journalists saw several hundred people gather for the three men's funerals on June 26. The Palestinian foreign ministry alleged 'official complicity' by Israel in June 25's attack, in a message on X. 'Israeli occupation forces prevented ambulance crews from reaching the wounded and obstructed civil defense teams from entering the village for several hours, allowing fires ignited by the settlers to spread and destroy dozens of homes,' it said. The Israeli military did not respond to a request by AFP to comment on those claims. A military spokesman told AFP its forces intervened on June 25 after 'dozens of Israeli civilians set fire to property in Kafr Malik' and a 'confrontation' involving 'mutual rock-hurling' broke out between Israelis and Palestinians. Referring to action by the Palestinians, the spokesman said: 'Several terrorists fired from within Kafr Malik and hurled rocks at the forces, who opened fire toward the source of fire and the rock-hurlers.' ST PHOTO: KELVIN CHNG 16 tonnes of korban meat donated by Muslims in Singapore to be distributed in Gaza SINGAPORE – Some 16 tonnes of canned sheep meat donated by Muslims in Singapore will be delivered to recipients in Gaza later in 2025. Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Faishal Ibrahim said on June 28 that this contribution shows that the Singapore's Muslim community is 'deeply mindful of our responsibility to support those facing challenges abroad'. Speaking on the sidelines of a korban meat packing and distribution event in Toa Payoh, Associate Professor Faishal said that the korban meat – after being processed and canned – is slated for distribution to Palestinians in Gaza in the second half of 2025. Distribution will be carried out by trusted partners on the ground, added Prof Faishal, who cited the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation as an example. Korban refers to the Islamic ritual of slaughtering farm animals such as sheep and lambs, followed by the distribution of the meat to worshippers and the needy. It takes place annually during Hari Raya Haji, and is organised in Singapore by the korban sub-committee of SalamSG – a platform for key mosque programmes in Singapore. Locally, 39 tonnes of meat will be distributed by various mosques to close to 1,000 beneficiaries. Korban rituals are fulfilled mostly overseas, in Australia, where livestock is slaughtered, before their meat is chilled, packed and sent to Singapore. In Singapore, six mosques have approvals to host korban rituals. Prof Faishal said that close to 5,700 orders for overseas korban livestock were placed in 2025, the highest since 2022 and a 20 per cent increase on 2024's orders. On the donation of korban meat to Palestinians, Prof Faishal said: 'We are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that the aid reaches its intended recipient.' 'This initiative represents not just our religious obligations, but also our commitment to supporting communities in crisis, demonstrating how our acts of worship can be channelled to those in need and to provide practical assistance to those in dire circumstances,' he added. Prof Faishal also said that he will discuss with the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore the possibility of expanding korban operations in Singapore beyond the six mosques, in response to feedback from the Muslim community. He said that 'the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance' will be factored into any decision to increase this figure. 'Please give us some time to look further into it and work closely with relevant agencies overseeing the regulatory requirements, to explore the possibilities.' His update on the distribution of korban meat in 2025 comes after more than $2.4 million was raised from Feb 24 to April 6 for Aid for Gaza 2025, to go towards providing necessities, healthcare and education for affected families in Gaza. The sum was raised in an SG60 community fund-raising initiative together with M³@Towns – a group of community-based platforms in Singapore that bring together volunteers and professionals from the Malay/Muslim community to serve the needs of residents. The fund-raiser was organised by Rahmatan Lil Alamin Foundation, in collaboration with the United Nations Children's Fund, the Egyptian Red Crescent and local humanitarian partner Humanity Matters.
