
Mastercard And Shopify Drive Crypto Payments Mainstream

Two major partnerships this month opened blockchain commerce to billions of consumers. Coinbase's integration with Shopify and Chainlink's collaboration with Mastercard represent moves toward the same goal: making crypto payments as seamless as traditional transactions and driving the crypto market toward mainstream payment adoption.
As the Genius Act, built around stablecoin frameworks, passed the Senate, Coinbase shares rallied 16%, and USDC issuer Circle's surged 25%. This confirmed expectations that regulatory clarity would accelerate institutional adoption, particularly for the compliant USDC stablecoin. USDC processes over $1 trillion in monthly payment volume globally across 21 blockchain networks, with circulation growing 78% year-over-year, as Shopify noted in its announcement. Starting in June, merchants can accept USDC as a Shopify Payments option with 24/7 settlement on Coinbase's Base blockchain. Shopify holds a 30% share of the e-commerce platform market and serves over 700 million customers, making it the number one platform globally.
The partnership removes technical barriers from accepting crypto payments by operating within existing Shopify payment flows and handling blockchain complexity behind the scenes. Merchants can now toggle on USDC payments and then receive fiat currency without needing to understand wallet management or private key security.
'Coins like USDC are especially appealing to buyers because they're stable compared to other crypto assets. We've had customers pay with USDC even before Shopify's official integration via BitPay. With this new update, the checkout experience will be much smoother, which I think will encourage even more adoption,' Phurba Sherpa, director of e-commerce at Wrist Aficionado, told me in an interview.
In a parallel move this week, Mastercard's 3.5 billion cardholders gained access to direct cryptocurrency purchases on decentralized exchanges through a platform called Swapper Finance, powered by Chainlink. Consumers who want to buy crypto can do so using their existing Mastercard without needing separate crypto wallets or exchanges.
"This is what crypto looks like when it's ready for the real world," Raj Dhamodharan, Mastercard's executive vice president of blockchain and digital assets, said in the announcement.
Real-World Benefits Boost Merchant Interest
Early adopters mention benefits from crypto-operated transactions, such as cost savings, faster global settlement, and fraud protection. While traditional credit card processing fees often exceed 3% per transaction, stablecoin payments cost less than 1%, with transparent blockchain network fees.
Cross-border transactions settle instantly instead of waiting several business days through bank intermediaries. For international e-commerce, this eliminates currency conversion fees ranging from 2-5% of transaction value.
Laura El, founder of fine art business Stellar Villa, said to me in a written response: "I've been able to collect payment from buyers around the world in a matter of seconds. Some of my international clients previously preferred wire transfers, and banks typically charged me $15 to $20 just to receive those. When I accept USDC payments directly to my digital wallet, the only cost I incur is a small transaction fee, which on networks like Base or Solana can be just fractions of a penny."
Payment adoption has been on the radar long before Coinbase and Mastercard, but never at this scale. In 2023, Visa ran pilot programs sending USDC through Solana to payment processors Worldpay and Nuvei. Retailers have also experimented over the years — in 2019, major chains like Whole Foods and Barnes & Noble tested accepting crypto through the Flexa network's SPEDN app.
This time, partnerships are propelled by solid ground with recognition from finance giants. While some consumers still associate cryptocurrency with volatility and complexity, the new infrastructure in place may position 2025 as the year crypto transitions from alternative asset to mainstream payment method. The success of these moves will determine whether digital assets achieve the mainstream adoption that has been elusive despite years of attempts.

Circle, the stablecoin issuer, has initiated a global sensation in capital markets. Understandably so. Circle's recent debut on the New York Stock Exchange as CRCL was impressive, to say the least. CRCL's share price skyrocketed nearly 600% from its IPO price of $31 to a high of $215 during the day. With a market cap of $45 billion, Circle has quickly become the representative of a new trend, giving rise to a crypto IPO season. Was it a flashy debut? Yes, and for all good reasons. Circle's IPO, the biggest in recent history, marks a major milestone in the industry's journey toward mainstream acceptance. USDC, Circle's flagship stablecoin, is backed by over $32 billion in reserves and is already a core component of onchain finance, serving as a payment medium that dominates the whole crypto ecosystem. But there are three key things you need to know about this year's IPO season to understand this phenomenon. 1. It's Only The Beginning Of Crypto IPOs Just days after Circle's IPO, Gemini, the crypto exchange founded by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, confidentially filed paperwork for its own IPO in the U.S. At the same time, all eyes moved onto Kraken, which is reportedly preparing to go public sometime in early 2026. Another company making moves is BitGo, a regulated U.S. crypto custodian. Back in February, reports suggested it was aiming for an IPO as early as 2025. A few other names also stand out as potential IPO contenders: These companies span the entire spectrum, from custody and analytics to wallets and infrastructure. What they have in common is a fresh appetite for public capital and growing investor interest, especially institutional one. As one analyst put it, 'After watching Circle's stock take off, any crypto firm with a clear business model is now looking at the IPO route seriously.' 2. The IPO Process Although the range of companies participating in the IPO summer is wide, crypto exchanges are leading the charge in pursuing US stock market listings. Think Gemini, Kraken, Bullish Global, FalconX, and Bithumb. These types of businesses are particularly well-positioned for public listing due to their strong cash flows, large customer bases, and stable business models that appeal to traditional investors. There are different ways companies can go about executing public offerings. Traditional IPOs remain the gold standard, particularly for mature companies with strong compliance records and established business operations. However, this process is very complex and time-consuming, making it most suitable for larger platforms with proven business models and solid profitability. That's why for smaller cryptocurrency companies seeking a faster path to public markets, reverse mergers have become a popular alternative. Companies, such as TRON, have successfully leveraged this approach by acquiring existing public companies to quickly gain access to the stock market, bypassing the lengthy traditional IPO process. Meanwhile, some companies are opting for direct listings. This is shown by Kraken's approach, which achieved a $16.2 billion valuation. They were able to create market liquidity for their shares without the need to raise new capital, making it ideal for firms that don't necessarily require additional funding but instead want to provide exit opportunities for existing shareholders. 3. High Crypto IPO Expectations Circle has definitely set a high bar. Its stock soared, boosting confidence across the crypto sector. But Circle isn't your typical crypto company. Their stablecoin, USDC, is a go-to onchain payment solution. In addition, its business model—earning yield on reserve assets—is easy for traditional finance folks to understand. Retail and institutional demand are growing, and with a government no longer hostile, investors see 2025 as the year when crypto companies leverage the IPO playbook. The dramatic shift in institutional adoption is particularly compelling. As of January 2025, 86% of institutional investors reported having exposure to digital assets or planned to make digital asset allocations later in the year. Additionally, recent success stories have proven that crypto companies can achieve substantial valuations in public markets. Circle's roughly $1.1 billion public listing formed the largest crypto IPO in recent history, sparking high expectations among industry experts that more digital asset companies will soon follow suit. However, only time will tell if this crypto IPO summer turns into an IPO supercycle, but Coinbase being the best performing S&P500 stock in June is definitely a promising sign.

Donald Trump says he's cutting off trade talks with Canada over Ottawa's digital tax
OTTAWA — U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that he is cutting off all trade talks with Canada over the federal government's digital services tax that would impact American tech giants, calling it a 'blatant attack' on the United States. Trump announced his plan to end trade talks in a social media post Friday afternoon, less than two weeks after he agreed with Prime Minister Mark Carney at the G7 summit on June 16 to work toward a deal to end the ongoing trade war within 30 days . 'Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately,' Trump's post said. 'We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period.' The Prime Minister's Office responded later Friday afternoon with a short statement that did not mention the digital services tax and expressed Canada's desire to continue the trade talks. 'The Canadian government will continue to engage in these complex negotiations with the United States in the best interest of Canadian workers and businesses,' the statement said. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said as recently as two weeks ago that Ottawa would press ahead with the tax, which is set to start collecting money on Monday. Prime Minister Mark Carney comments moments after U.S. President Donald Trump said that he was "terminating all discussions on trade with Canada" and threatened new tariffs over Ottawa's plans to push ahead with a digital services tax. Carney called the negotiations "complex." 'As always, Conservatives are ready to help get a good deal for Canada,' Poilievre's statement said. 'We must put Canada first.' 'To a certain extent, what we just saw from Donald Trump is exactly from his playbook. We've seen it so many times before,' Clow said. 'This is how he negotiates. He negotiates by threat, attempting to intimidate to yield more concessions from Canada. This is just a part of how it works and they've got to keep talking and hopefully come to some sort of deal.' The trade war has rattled businesses and workers across the country, with layoffs at auto plants and steel factory shutdowns in recent weeks. Trump doubled his steel and aluminum tariffs to 50 per cent against Canada on June 4, arguing the tariffs are needed to protect and promote a key American industry, as his broader policy of tariffs is designed to raise government revenues and overcome what the U.S. president argues is unfair commercial relations for his country. The Liberal government has long planned to impose a tax on digital services, which Trump views as an unfair trade practice that will hit American companies like Google and Meta. In his social media post Friday, Trump alluded to how the European Union is planning a similar digital services tax, and said Canada was 'copying' the bloc of states with 'a direct and blatant attack on our Country.' On Thursday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the G7 — a group of rich democracies that includes Canada — agreed to exempt American companies from certain taxes. In return, the Trump administration would remove a so-called 'revenge tax' from a sweeping bill in the U.S. Congress, which would have imposed taxes on investments from countries the U.S. deemed to be treating American firms unfairly. The policy, enacted in 2024's Digital Services Tax Act , imposed a three per cent tax on revenue earned from online marketing and advertising, social media and some sales of user data. The tax applies to domestic and foreign businesses that reap more than $1.1 billion in global revenue and earn more than $20 million of revenue within Canada in a given year. The Liberals promised to introduce the tax in 2019, and argued hiking tax on big companies could help pay for social services and other public investments to spur the economy. The independent Parliamentary Budget Officer reported in 2023 that the tax would raise about $1.2 billion per year in government revenues. In a written statement Friday, the head of the Business Council of Canada said it has warned the government for the past three years that the digital services tax 'could risk undermining' Canada's economic relationship with the U.S. Goldy Hyder called on Canada to immediately propose to eliminate the tax, in exchange for the removal of American tariffs on Canadian goods. Catherine Cobden, president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, said Friday that trade relations are so unpredictable and uncertain with the U.S. that even a new deal to remove current tariffs can no longer be seen as a guarantee. She called for stronger measures to encourage using domestically produced steel in Canada, and other steps to protect the sector. 'We are really under attack by the United States, so we are rapidly pivoting away from that market,' she said. Another business group that has opposed the digital services tax, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, said Friday that 'surprises' should be expected in negotiations. 'The tone and tenor of talks has improved in recent months, and we hope to see progress continue,' said the chamber's president, Candace Laing. 'We respect that Team Canada is conducting these negotiations at the table, and we need to give them the space to navigate.'
