Ex-Scotland football captain Colin Hendry admits harassing his ex
The former central defender who captained Scotland at a World Cup and helped Blackburn Rovers win the Premiership title, was sentenced at Preston Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
Hendry, 59, had admitted harassment of his former partner over a period of six months after their relationship ended.
Natasha Clark, senior crown prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) North West, said: 'Colin Hendry harassed a former partner for over six months after their relationship ended after she stopped returning his calls.
'He ignored her wishes and breached boundaries she put in place, using multiple different platforms to contact her.
'Hendry's behaviour was intimidating and persistent, causing the victim immense distress, but despite this he initially refused to accept it was harassment.
'This outcome is a clear indication that the CPS will not hesitate to prosecute anyone guilty of harassment whether this is in person or online.'
The court heard Hendry sent his ex messages from multiple different email accounts, utilising no caller ID to call her after she blocked his number.
When his calls went unanswered, he turned to other means including dozens of emails and messaging her on LinkedIn.
After her saying she no longer wanted any kind of relationship with him, Hendry consistently attempted to contact her, showing up to her house with unwanted gifts and flowers on several occasions.
The victim reported Hendry to the police, saying she felt depressed and anxious because of his behaviour. She said she was unable to leave the house without fearing an unannounced visit from him.
Lancashire Police contacted Hendry to warn him about his behaviour, telling him to stop all communications to the ex-partner which were unwanted.
While Hendry admitted to his conduct, he tried to deny it was harassment, claiming he never received a written warning from police so continued to contact her and that he was simply concerned for the affected person and her dog.
Hendry later admitted one count of harassment without violence.
He started his football career with Keith in the Highland League before moving to Dundee then winning the league title with Blackburn Rovers and also played for Manchester City.
He was Scotland's captain for the 1998 World Cup campaign and also played for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

Unlicensed driver has "no real explanation" for speeding at 70mph in 30 zone
An Isle of Wight man who drove at 70mph in a 30mph zone in front of a police car, whilst not holding a full driving licence, has been banned from driving for 50 days. Jarek Kubacki, 33, of Wilton Road in Shanklin, appeared before the IW Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, July 29, where he was sentenced for speeding and driving without a licence. Prosecutor Lauren McConnell told the court that on January 17, 2024, at around 8.30pm, police officers spotted Kubacki driving a Volkswagen Golf and followed the vehicle from Newport to Shanklin. On Sandown Road in Lake, officers recorded Kubacki travelling at 70mph in a 30mph zone, Mrs McConnell said. Michael McGoldrick, defending, said there was a significant delay in the case reaching court – 18 months – as it initially proceeded through the single justice procedure before being escalated to an in-person hearing for sentencing. Mr McGoldrick told the court Kubacki was 'surprised' to learn he was clocked at 70mph, but is "incredibly apologetic". He admitted there was 'no real explanation' for his client's excessive speed. Kubacki has since booked his driving theory test, ahead of an anticipated disqualification, Mr McGoldrick said. Magistrates handed Kubacki a 50-day driving ban and ordered him to pay a £350 fine, £140 surcharge fee and £85 in court costs.

Drug dealers hit with 340 years in prison amid major police crackdown in Essex
More than 340 years of combined prison sentences have been secured for drug dealers as police continue to tackle county lines across Essex. The convictions are the result of a six-month crackdown led by the Serious Violence Unit (SVU) at Essex Police, which includes the force's dedicated Operation Raptor and Orochi teams. In that time, officers have arrested 309 people, charged 236, and dismantled 93 drug lines, seizing more than 28kg of drugs, 89 weapons, and more than £302,000 in cash. They have also safeguarded 164 vulnerable or exploited individuals, many of whom were young people coerced into criminal activity. Class A drugs recovered during an investigation (Image: Essex Police) One of the latest convictions involved the "Smokey" drug line, which supplied crack cocaine and heroin in the Basildon area between August and December 2023. Three men were arrested after warrants were executed in Basildon and Pitsea in July. Rangairai Gwatidzo, 33, of Turner Close, Basildon, was identified as the controller of the line. Jason Kirby, 40, of Chevers Pawen, Basildon, operated the drug line phone, and Kevin Gormer, 43, of Goldhanger Cross, Basildon, acted as a runner. At Basildon Crown Court in April, Gwatidzo was jailed for four years. Rangarirai Gwatidzo (Image: Essex Police) Mr Gormer received a 21-month sentence, suspended for two years, and Mr Kirby was sentenced last month to 22 months, suspended for two years, along with 100 hours of unpaid work and a rehabilitation activity requirement. Detective Constable Daniel Onley, who led the investigation, said: "This case saw a wide variety of drugs recovered and a committed drug supply network removed from the streets of Basildon. "The trade in crack cocaine and heroin is rooted in exploitation, violence and the misery of addiction. "Where we disrupt the actions of county lines drug dealers, we bring down incidents violence and we bring down disorder associated with this activity. "This work is having an impact already in Basildon and wider south Essex." Roger Hirst, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex, praised the force's approach. He added: "The county lines drug trade shatters lives, blights communities and exploits the most vulnerable people. "Working with our communities, maintaining their trust and confidence to use stop and search effectively and building on the success of the Violence and Vulnerability Partnerships' public health approach to addressing serious violence, we have achieved great success."
