Japan to Import Canadian LNG in Bid to Diversify Energy Supply

Amid rising geopolitical tensions, especially in the Middle East, Japan has received some welcome news on the energy front. Mitsubishi Corporation is preparing to begin importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Canada. These shipments will be primarily destined for the Japanese market.
This will be the first major delivery of Canadian LNG to Japan, which currently depends on Australia and Malaysia for over half of its LNG imports.
With limited domestic energy resources, Japan has been actively working to diversify its LNG supply. Australia, its largest supplier, is projected to face production declines in the coming years. This highlights the need for more stable and reliable sources. Canadian LNG, backed by geographic proximity and political stability, presents a strong alternative. It could play a key role in strengthening Japan's energy security.
LNG is natural gas that has been cooled to a liquid state, reducing its volume to about one-600th and making it much easier to transport by sea.
Japan does produce some natural gas domestically, mainly in areas like Niigata and Chiba, but this supply falls far short of meeting national demand. Like oil, Japan relies almost entirely on imports for its natural gas.
With delays in restarting nuclear power plants, Japan remains heavily dependent on thermal power, which generates around 70% of the country's electricity. Gas-fired power plants are the largest contributors.
Compared to other fossil fuels, natural gas produces less CO₂, making it a relatively cleaner option. Because of its key role in electricity generation, any disruption in LNG supply could have serious consequences for the economy and daily life. The new LNG supply will come from the LNG Canada project in British Columbia, a facility developed with investment from Mitsubishi Corporation, Shell, and other partners. Natural gas is extracted inland and transported via a 670-kilometer pipeline to the coast. There, it is liquefied and shipped overseas by tanker.
The project represents a total investment of about $14 billion USD and has an annual production capacity of 14 million tons. Mitsubishi holds a 15% stake, giving it rights to around 2.1 million tons per year. If all of that were exported to Japan, it would cover roughly a quarter of the country's projected increase in LNG demand.
Mitsubishi was the first major Japanese trading company to enter the LNG business, beginning in the 1960s. Today, it is involved in LNG projects across more than 10 countries. With the addition of Canadian supply, Mitsubishi's annual LNG production capacity has grown to around 15 million tons, the largest among Japanese companies.
Katsumi Saito, Senior Executive Officer overseeing the fuel business and related operations, commented, "Our strength lies in the knowledge and development capabilities built on more than 50 years of experience."
One of the key advantages of Canadian LNG is proximity. Shipping LNG from Canada's west coast to Japan takes about 10 days — much shorter than the roughly 30 days required from the US Gulf Coast via the Panama Canal. That route can take even longer when canal traffic is restricted by drought.
Other shipping routes, such as around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, can take up to 60 days. LNG from the Middle East typically takes about 16 days. In contrast, Canadian LNG avoids major chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz, offering more stable and reliable delivery.
Canada also has vast natural gas reserves — enough to meet Japan's current annual LNG demand for about 25 years. Its cold climate makes the liquefaction process more energy-efficient. Canadian LNG has a higher heat content than LNG from the United States. On top of that, there is strong political support in Canada for energy exports, ensuring long-term policy stability.
As of fiscal 2024, Australia supplies 38% of Japan's LNG. Although shipping times from Australia are similar to those from Canada, slower gas field development — driven by climate change policies — has raised concerns about future supply. To reduce risks, Japan has also prioritized LNG imports from the United States, Qatar, which has massive reserves, and Russia.
The US has significantly increased its LNG exports in recent years. Qatar, however, faces geopolitical risks, especially due to tensions with Iran. Japan continues to import LNG from Russia, but new projects have been put on hold under US sanctions. For instance, Japanese trading firms like Mitsui & Co are currently unable to engage with Russia's Arctic LNG 2 project.
Japan's electricity demand is expected to grow as the number of data centers increases, driven by the expansion of artificial intelligence technologies. If decarbonization efforts do not progress, the government estimates LNG imports could rise by 12% by 2040, reaching about 74 million tons.
The LNG Canada project marks the first new LNG venture involving Japanese companies in around six years. With global instability highlighting the need for stronger supply chains, Canada's role as a new supplier is a major win for Japan. Further expansion of production capacity is also eagerly anticipated.

Create Account By any measure, the past six months have been a bumpy ride. The Canadian economy lost momentum over much of last year, with economic growth cooling, job creation slowing and the unemployment rate creeping higher. Then, as 2025 began, came the shock of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs and, more recently, the outbreak of increased military conflict in the Middle East. Amid these developments, indices of global policy and business uncertainty have risen sharply. This creates a difficult backdrop for Canadian businesses and for the re-elected Liberal government led by Prime Minister Mark Carney. Economic growth in the first quarter of 2025 received a temporary boost from surging cross-border trade as companies in both Canada and the United States sought to 'front-run' the risk of tariffs by increasing purchases of manufactured and semi-finished goods and building up inventories. However, trade flows are now diminishing as higher U.S. and Canadian tariffs come into effect in some sectors and are threatened in others. Meanwhile, consumer confidence has plunged, household spending has softened, housing markets across most of Canada are in a funk and companies are pausing investments until there's greater clarity on the future of the Canada-U.S. trade relationship. Some forecasters believe a recession will unfold over the second and third quarters of 2025, as the Canadian economy absorbs a mix of internal and external blows, before rebounding modestly in 2026. For this year, average economic growth (after inflation) is unlikely to exceed 1%, down from 1.6% in 2024. The unemployment rate is expected to tick higher over the next 12-18 months. Housing starts are on track to drop, notwithstanding a rhetorical political commitment to boost housing supply in Ottawa and several provincial capitals. And business investment is poised to decline further or, at best, remain flat, continuing the pattern seen throughout the Justin Trudeau era. Even this underwhelming forecast is premised on the assumption that ongoing trade tensions with the U.S. don't spiral out of control. We do not face a hit to the economy remotely equivalent to that generated by the COVID pandemic in 2020-21, so there's no argument for additional deficit-financed spending by governments, particularly when public debt already has been on a tear. For the Carney government, the top priority must be to lessen uncertainty around Canada-U.S. trade and mitigate the threat of sweeping tariffs as quickly as possible. Until this is accomplished, the economic outlook will remain dire. A second priority is to improve the 'hosting conditions' for business growth in Canada after almost a decade of stagnant living standards and chronically weak private-sector investment. This will require significant reforms to current taxation, regulatory and project assessment policies aimed at making Canada a more attractive location for companies, investors and entrepreneurs. An important lesson of the Trudeau era is that economic prosperity cannot be built on the back of an expanding government sector, higher deficits and ever-greater political tinkering with the economy. It's time for something different. Policymakers must recognize that Canada is a largely market-based economy where the private sector, rather than government, is responsible for the bulk of production, employment, investment, innovation and exports. This insight should inform the design and delivery of economic policymaking going forward. Trump announces tariff rates for numerous countries

U.S. President Donald Trump sent letters to governments around the world on Monday informing them of the tariff rates he would impose starting Aug. 1 — though Canada's July 21 deadline to reach a deal appears to remain. Trump said he would impose a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Japan and South Korea beginning Aug. 1 as he unveiled the first two of an expected 12 letters to trading partners outlining the new levies they face. If for any reason you decide to raise your Tariffs, then, whatever the number you choose to raise them by, will be added onto the 25 per cent that we charge, Trump said in letters to the leaders of the two Asian countries, which he posted on his Truth Social platform. Later, Trump also announced the U.S. will impose 25 per cent tariffs on Malaysia and Kazakhstan, 30 per cent on South Africa and 40 per cent on Laos and Myanmar. The rate for South Korea is the same as Trump initially announced on April 2, which he was calling Liberation Day, while the rate for Japan is one point higher than first announced. A week later, he capped all of the so-called reciprocal tariffs at 10 per cent until July 9 to allow for negotiations. Only two agreements have been reached so far — with Britain and Vietnam. There was no immediate response from the Japanese or South Korean embassies. Country-specific U.S. tariffs will not be stacked on top of sectoral duties, a White House official said on Monday when asked about Japan and South Korea. About 12 countries will receive letters from Trump, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said at a briefing without identifying them. She said Trump would sign an executive order on Monday formally delaying the July 9 deadline to Aug. 1. There will be additional letters in the coming days, Leavitt said, adding that we are close on some deals. The European Union will not be receiving a letter setting out higher tariffs, EU sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday. U.S. stocks fell in response, the latest market ruction since Trump unleashed a global trade war on his return to office in January. His moves have repeatedly whipsawed financial markets and sent policymakers scrambling to protect their economies. U.S. stocks were driven to near bear-market territory by his cascade of tariff announcements through the early spring but quickly rebounded to record highs in the weeks after he put the stiffest levies on hold on April 9. The S&P 500 on Monday was down nearly one per cent, its biggest drop in three weeks. U.S.-listed shares of Japanese automotive companies fell, with Toyota Motor down 4.1 per cent at mid-afternoon trading and Honda Motor off by 3.8 per cent. The dollar surged against both the Japanese yen and the South Korean won. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said earlier on Monday he expected several trade announcements to be made in the next 48 hours, adding that his inbox was full of last-ditch offers from countries to clinch a tariff deal by the deadline. Bessent did not say which countries could get deals and what they might contain. Trump has kept much of the world guessing on the outcome of months of talks with countries hoping to avoid the hefty tariff hikes he has threatened. Countries have scrambled to hammer out deals before the Wednesday deadline. South Korea and Indonesia dispatched representatives to Washington, while Thailand submitted a new trade proposal offering zero tariffs on many U.S. goods. We've had a lot of people change their tune in terms of negotiations. So my mailbox was full last night with a lot of new offers, a lot of new proposals, Bessent said in an interview with CNBC. So it's going to be a busy couple of days. Canada likely not affected While other countries were hit with high rates on Liberation Day, Canada was spared any additional pain on April 2. Because the looming trade deal that was set for July 9 related to tariffs the U.S. president handed out three months ago, Canada is not under the same pressure to make a deal in the coming days. Instead, Prime Minister Mark Carney Trump agreed in March to negotiate a new security and economic partnership, and have been working toward that since Carney visited the White House in early May. Scrapping digital service tax is part of U.S. negotiations, Carney says Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Monday that scrapping the digital services tax was one part of the bigger trade negotiation with the U.S., though the White House said Carney 'caved' when trade talks were cancelled. Talks have since resumed. However, Canada is still being hit with fentanyl-related tariffs. Those 25 per cent tariffs, with a lower 10 per cent levy on energy and potash, only apply to exports not compliant with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) on trade. Canada is also being hit with Trump's tariffs on steel, aluminum and automobiles. That doesn't mean Canadians won't feel the impact of Trump's trade negotiations this week, however, as high tariff rates imposed on other nations could still disrupt the global trading system and impact Canadians indirectly. EU still working to reach deal For its part, the European Union still aims to reach a trade deal by July 9 after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Trump had a good exchange, a Commission spokesperson said. It was not clear, however, whether there had been a meaningful breakthrough in talks to stave off tariff hikes on the United States' largest trading partner. Adding to the pressure, Trump threatened to impose a 17 per cent tariff on EU food and agriculture exports, it emerged last week. Trump had said on Sunday the U.S. was close to finalizing several trade pacts and would notify other countries by July 9 of higher tariff rates. He said they would not take effect until Aug. 1, a three-week reprieve. He also put members of the developing nations' BRICS group in his sights as its leaders met in Brazil, threatening an additional 10 per cent tariff on any BRICS countries aligning themselves with anti-American policies. The new 10 per cent tariff will be imposed on individual countries if they take anti-American policy actions, a source familiar with the matter said. The BRICS group comprises Brazil, Russia, India and China and South Africa along with recent joiners Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
