German consumer sentiment dips in July due to rising savings appetite, finds GfK
The consumer sentiment index, published by GfK market research institute and the Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions (NIM), fell to -20.3 points from a slightly revised -20.0 points the month before.
Analysts polled by Reuters had predicted a slight rise, to -19.3.
"After three consecutive increases, the consumer climate has thus suffered a slight setback," said Rolf Buerkl, consumer analyst at NIM.
"This is primarily due to the increased willingness to save," he said, which jumped 3.9 points to 13.9 points - its highest level in more than a year.
"A high willingness to save among consumers is also an expression of their continuing uncertainty," Buerkl noted, citing unpredictable U.S. trade policies as one factor.
Income expectations, on the other hand, continued their recovery for the fourth straight month, rising 2.4 points to 12.8 points, supported by favourable wage agreements and moderate inflation.
Economic expectations also climbed seven points to 20.1 points - the highest level since the outbreak of the Ukraine war - as consumers anticipate recovery driven by a 500-billion-euro ($580.15 billion) defence and infrastructure stimulus package.
NOTE - The survey period was from May 30 to June 11, 2025.
An indicator reading above zero signals year-on-year growth in private consumption. A value below zero indicates a drop compared with the same period a year earlier.
According to GfK, a one-point change in the indicator corresponds to a year-on-year change of 0.1% in private consumption.
The "willingness to buy" indicator represents the balance between positive and negative responses to the question: "Do you think now is a good time to buy major items?"
The income expectations sub-index reflects expectations about the development of household finances in the coming 12 months.
The additional business cycle expectations index reflects respondents' assessment of the general economic situation over the next 12 months.

More than 600,000 cars recalled across Europe over engine issue
Automaker Stellantis is recalling diesel cars across Europe, produced between October 2017 and January 2023, due to potential camshaft chain issues. In an announcement on Thursday, the company stated that "Some 2017-2023 Peugeot, Citroën, Opel/Vauxhall, DS and Fiat vehicles equipped with the 1.5 BlueHDi diesel engine may face a premature wear of the camshaft chain, leading to abnormal noise and in the worst-case scenario to a breakage of the chain." While no overall European figure was provided, 636,000 vehicles in France are affected, with Belgian media reporting an additional 117,000 cars in Belgium. Stellantis added that it was unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue. The rework consists of a software update and, if needed, an oil change. Stellantis added: "In addition, a special repairer application has been developed which can detect a possible problem with the chain by analysing the noise of the engine." Stellantis was formed in early 2021 through the merger of France's PSA and Italian-American group Fiat Chrysler. The 1.5 BlueHDi diesel engine prompting the recall was developed before the merger by PSA, the maker of Peugeot, Citroen, Opel and DS brands. Stellantis added that Fiat cars were also affected by the recall. "Under this enhanced policy, Stellantis will cover 100 per cent of parts and labour costs for up to 10 years or 240,000 kilometres, subject to specific conditions", it added. "This additional policy applies to eligible repairs carried out between 1 January 2023 and 30 June 2025, provided that the vehicle's maintenance and diagnosis meet the guidelines recommended by the relevant brand."
