Continue close collab with S'wak govt to boost state's economy, Premier tells ACCCIS

KUCHING (June 14): Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has urged the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak (ACCCIS) to continue its close collaboration with the state government to drive Sarawak's economic transformation, particularly in energy, industry, education, and agriculture.
Speaking at the ACCCIS 60th Anniversary Gala Dinner here tonight, Abang Johari said Sarawak is entering a new phase of economic development, and welcomed stronger engagement from the business community to seize opportunities in areas such as green energy and industrialisation.
'I hope ACCCIS, we work together. The moment the door knocks, then I call you, and you talk to them. That's where your joint venture comes in, and the Sarawak government will facilitate,' he said in his speech during the ACCCIS 60th Anniversary Gala Dinner at a hotel here tonight.
He noted that ACCCIS has been a partner to the state government since 1965 and has contributed significantly to Sarawak's economic development.
'Of course, 60 years is a long journey and I believe that ACCCIS, as a partner to the government from 1965, have done and contributed a lot to the economic development of Sarawak. Thank you very much, ACCCIS,' he said.
Abang Johari went on to highlight Sarawak's focus on green energy as a key area for collaboration.
'Our strength is in energy. If your power is competitive and sustainable, people will bring their investments here,' he said, adding that joint efforts between the government and business sector are essential to attract industrial players to Sarawak.
He also called on ACCCIS to play an active role in supporting the state's industrialisation drive, education development, and modern agriculture, all of which are aligned with Sarawak's long-term strategy to build a resilient and sustainable economy.
Among those present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang; Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng; Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) president Datuk Ng Yih Pyng; ACCCIS president Kong Chiong Ung and organising chairman Datuk Tan Jit Kee.

Delay expanded SST to next year amid global uncertainty, urges ACCCIM
PETALING JAYA: The government should reconsider implementing the expanded Sales and Services Tax (SST) next year to allow more time for preparation, says the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM). The group said adequate preparation is crucial for ensuring better compliance and smooth implementation. "Our concern is that multiple cost increases are coinciding with a challenging global and domestic economic environment. "This is exacerbated by the uncertainty surrounding trade tariffs policy and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, which together create significant economic headwinds. "The effects of rising costs, which have been felt in 2025, are expected to persist or influence the business and economic landscape in 2026," it said in a statement on Saturday (June 28). It added that the proposed postponement of the SST implementation was among the issues raised in a letter submitted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. "We have respectfully urged the government to defer the implementation of SST to January 2026, starting with 4% for the first two years. "We also asked that taxable services threshold registration be raised higher to RM3mil for rental or leasing services, and construction services, and the threshold of exemption from paying tax for SMEs tenants be raised higher to RM2mil annual sales. "We also proposed a longer exemption period of 36 months for non-reviewable and reviewable contracts to cover all project types due to the type of projects and project cycles," it said. ACCCIM also noted that while the higher SST threshold for rental and leasing services, as well as small and medium enterprise (SME) tenants, will ease compliance and financial burden, a further increase would be more suitable. "Higher threshold is better aligned with the definition of SMEs for the services and other sectors," it said. On the Finance Ministry's recent adjustments to fine-tune the SST framework, ACCCIM said it was a welcome move that they take cautiously. "We cautiously welcomed the government's announcement on the review of the expanded SST, taking into account ACCCIM's concerns and feedback. "This includes matters regarding the timing, spillover effects, scope of SST expansion, SST rate and the registration threshold of taxable services," it said. The revision includes the exemption of SST for selected fruits, higher threshold for rental and leasing services, financial services and the exemption of selected beauty services.

KOTA SAMARAHAN (June 25): The Sarawak government will continue to support developments that demonstrate sustainability, inclusivity and innovation, said Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The Premier said this is to ensure that the built environment keeps pace with the state's ambitions. 'Architecture sits at the heart of that agenda. We seek buildings and neighbourhoods that nurture biodiversity, embrace smart technology and, above all, put people first,' he said in a speech for the AIR Architecture Competition prize presentation at Hock Seng Lee (HSL) Tower here today. The text of Abang Johari's speech was delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who represented him at the event. The Premier said the competition is aligned with the state government's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, charting a path towards a high-income, green, and digital economy powered by talent and creativity. 'Competitions like AIR push our collective imagination and help translate policy into projects on the ground,' he added. The AIR Architecture Competition involves a 13-acre land between Kuching International Airport and Saradise. It is HSL's second national architecture competition after 'Langit' in 2021, and was jointly organised with the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM). HSL is the landowner and promoter of the competition, which is open to PAM members nationwide. Abang Johari also noted the Project AIR tagline, 'The AIR Above Us, Di Bawah AIR Mengalir', as a simple phrase which distils Sarawak's long tradition of living in harmony with nature—from longhouses upriver to the shophouses of the Nanyang style that line old Kuching. 'Great cities grow from great rivers, whether in Kuala Lumpur or here at Kuching. When we design well, we create not merely handsome façades but healthier, happier communities. 'When we build responsibly, we honour our rivers, our forests, and the generations yet to come,' he said, adding it was heartening to see human-centred emphasis in each of the competition's submissions. Anwar extends condolences to Sarawak Premier over wife's passing
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended his condolences to Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg over the passing of his wife, Puan Sri Juma'ani Tuanku Haji Bujang. In a Facebook post, Anwar said he and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, were deeply saddened by the news of her demise. 'Our thoughts are with the family, especially Abang Jo (Abang Johari), whom I met just yesterday (Sunday). 'May he remain patient and steadfast during this trial. 'We pray that the soul of the late Puan Sri be forgiven for any of her sins and granted a special place by His side. Al-Fatihah,' read the post. Both Deputy Prime Ministers – Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof – also conveyed their condolences to Abang Johari. Ahmad Zahid, in a statement, described her passing as a great loss to the people of the state. He said her loss is not only felt by her immediate family but is also mourned by the people of Sarawak, who greatly valued her contributions and service. 'The Premier's late wife, whom I had the honour of knowing, was a gracious and gentle soul who was deeply committed to charitable and social work, especially in empowering women and communities in Sarawak. 'I represented the Federal Government in visiting the Sarawak Premier's family, conveying our condolences and expressing the solidarity and prayers of all Malaysians in this time of sorrow. 'I pray that Allah showers His mercy upon her soul, forgives all her sins, and places her among the righteous. Fadillah, in a Facebook post, expressed his condolences and described her passing as a significant loss to the people of Sarawak. 'It is a tremendous loss not only to the family of the deceased but also to the people of Sarawak. 'I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Premier and all members of the family,' he said. Meanwhile, several Cabinet Ministers also conveyed their condolences through official statements and social media posts. Juma'ani, 76, passed away at a private medical centre in Kuching at 3.34am yesterday. She was the daughter of Sarawak's second Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Tuanku Bujang Tuanku Othman. She was buried at the Semariang Muslim Cemetery in Petra Jaya, Kuching.
