No automatic extensions for judges, civil servants, says PM
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he deliberately avoided meeting with senior judges apart from the chief justice to prevent any perception of interference. (Bernama pic) PUTRAJAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today said that extending the service of civil servants, including top judges, is not automatic and must follow the procedures set out in the Federal Constitution. Anwar said he found it puzzling that retirements, whether of civil servants, judges or other officers, had come into question. 'There are procedures for when one reaches their retirement age. One does not automatically get their tenure extended… In this case, I was criticised,' he said in his speech at the Prime Minister's Department's monthly assembly. Anwar said there appeared to be a campaign to pressure the government to either extend or end specific tenures, which he warned could politicise institutions meant to remain independent. 'If you understand the Federal Constitution, you would know the process,' he said. 'There's a commission, the prime minister, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Then, it (an appointment) is presented for discussion with the Conference of Rulers. So all those steps must be followed.' Amid talk of lobbying, Anwar said this was precisely why he had deliberately avoided meeting with senior judges apart from the chief justice. The judiciary is currently facing a series of impending retirements. Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat retires on July 1. Her expected successor, Court of Appeal president Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, is due to retire just a day later, while Federal Court judge Nallini Pathmanathan will retire in August. None of them has received an extension. The legal fraternity, including the Malaysian Bar, has called for the tenure of all three judges to be extended, citing concerns over the possibility of political interference in judicial appointments and promotions. Anwar also repeated his defence of his non-involvement in two high-profile court decisions: one involving Najib Razak, who received a discharge not amounting to an acquittal in the SRC International case, and the other involving Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who was fully acquitted of corruption charges. He said public reactions to both cases had been inconsistent and seemed to be politically driven. Anwar said the judiciary must ultimately be shielded from undue pressure, whether political or otherwise. 'Not according to political tastes, not according to group preferences, and not according to the wishes of lobbyists,' he added.

Fahmi: Review not rushed
Unity initiative: Fahmi (second from right) with participants of the Nanba programme. He is flanked by director-general of the Community Communication Department (J-Kom) Datuk Ismail Yusop (left) and Batu MP P. Prabakaran. — Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: The government's decision to review the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) is not a hasty reaction but one that has gone through discussions over the past two weeks, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the discussions began with a draft presented by the Economy Ministry secretary-general to the Cabinet. 'We've actually discussed this. In my press conference a few weeks ago, I mentioned that the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) had issued a directive to review the draft presented by the Economy Ministry secretary-general. 'As you know, any policy, programme or decision must first be presented at a Cabinet meeting. 'So, on Friday last week, the Prime Minister requested that all ministries review the draft and provide their feedback to the Economy Ministry,' he said at a press conference after launching the Nadi Aspirasi Nasional Bersama Anak Muda programme organised by the Community Communications Department (J-KOM) yesterday. Fahmi, who is also the government spokesman, said a special Cabinet meeting was held last Monday to review feedback from all ministries. 'During the meeting, it was determined that several issues raised by the ministries require further consideration by the Economy Ministry in the preparation of the 13MP document.' 'That was one of the reasons why, in last Wednesday's Cabinet meeting it was decided that Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah would take on the duties and functions of the Economy Minister,' he said, Bernama reported. Earlier, former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli was reported to have questioned the government's move to review the 13MP, calling it a hasty response to social media criticism. This followed Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar's announcement on Friday that Amir Hamzah had been tasked with 'reviewing and revamping' the 13MP while concurrently performing the duties and functions of the Economy Minister, effective immediately. The 13MP is scheduled to be tabled in Parliament on July 31.

Govt open to factual criticisms on taxation system says PM Anwar
PUTRAJAYA: The government remains open to constructive criticism on taxation policies as long as it is fact-based, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today. Speaking at a gathering with Prime Minister's Department staff, Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, emphasised the importance of factual discourse over unfounded complaints. Anwar addressed recent concerns raised by university students regarding electricity bill adjustments, clarifying that rates have not increased. 'Public universities are exempted, so if there are genuine issues, we will address them. But spreading misinformation under the guise of freedom only leads to slander,' he said. The Prime Minister reiterated that adjustments in electricity tariffs and the expanded Sales and Service Tax (SST) scope aim to ensure wealthier individuals contribute fairly while shielding vulnerable groups from financial strain. 'Criticism is welcome, but it must be factual and constructive,' he added.
