Indonesia open: Tang Jie-Ee Wei check into semis, Soon Huat-Shevon check out of tourney

The Sun06-06-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: National mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei lived up to their second seedings when they bounced back from a game down to power into the semi-finals of the Indonesia Open 2025 in Jakarta today.
In the Super 1000 tournament quarter-final clash at the iconic Istora Senayan, the Malaysians needed 54 minutes to overcome fifth-seeded Danes Jesper Toft-Amalie Magelund 17-21, 21-16, 21-14.
Their reward is a last-four showdown against sixth seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran after the Thais dashed hopes of an all-Malaysian semi-final by disposing of Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie 21-16, 21-12.
Tang Jie said they focused a lot on raising their tempo to match their Danish opponents' pace and stayed aggressive throughout their first-ever meeting against Toft-Magelund.
'I think my partner did a great job leading the way today and that really helped us to eventually win the match,' he said in an audio recording shared by Badminton World Federation to the media.
Shevon, meanwhile, was disappointed with their inability to remain consistent, resulting in them committing unforced errors to give away cheap points to the world number six Thai pair.
Soon Huat also admitted that they crumbled under pressure and struggled to keep up with the speed and intensity of Dechapol-Supissara.

Putrajaya mass running event charts 33,000 sign-ups

One of Malaysia's largest mass-participation running events will see 33,000 participants taking to the streets of Putrajaya on July 13. The race has drawn runners, aiming to cross the finish lines in the 5km, 10km, 21km and 42km courses, from more than 48 countries. 'Since our modest beginnings in 2014 with just 3,674 runners, Score Marathon has seen steady but exponential growth over the years,' said Score Sports Management chief executive officer Patricia Tan. 'Last year, over 24,253 runners participated and this year, registrations surged to 33,000, setting a new milestone,' Tan said. AIA Vitality, the health programme by AIA Malaysia, returns as presenting sponsor for the fourth straight year. 'At AIA, we are proud to support a movement that unites runners from all walks of life,' said AIA Malaysia chief marketing officer Chee Foong Wai. 'We're inspired by the spirit of this event and remain committed to supporting and championing initiatives that empower Malaysians to live healthier, longer, better lives,' Wai added. Last year, Score Marathon recycled 1,150kg of plastic, equivalent to 46,320 plastic bottles – setting a benchmark for environmentally responsible sporting events in the region. It also partnered with Pressio, a sportswear brand using bio-based yarns, as official apparel partner, while medals are crafted from recycled materials in collaboration with Natureloop. Score Marathon is supported by the Youth and Sports Ministry and certified a World Athletics Label Road Race. This recognises the full marathon as a qualifying race for the Abbott World Marathon Majors while making its affiliation with the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races official, inducting it into an elite group of globally recognised events.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei on their toes against giant-killing Indonesian pair

National mixed double shuttler Toh Ee Wei - Chen Tang Jie react during quarter-final match at the Malaysia Open 2025 at Axiata Arena Bukit Jalil. — FAIHAN GHANI/The Star PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei will need to be on high alert when they take on Indonesia's Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Pasaribu in the second round of the Japan Open today. Jafar-Felisha, ranked No. 14 in the world, sent shockwaves in the opening round by ousting All-England champions Guo Xinwa-Cheng Fanghui 21-12, 21-17. Their upset win serves as a timely reminder that they are more than capable of derailing Tang Jie-Ee Wei's campaign in Tokyo. Tang Jie and Ee Wei, however, can take heart from their previous meeting with the Indonesians, which saw the Malaysians emerge victorious in the second round of the Indonesian Masters in January. However, Jafar-Felisha have a win over Tang Jie under their belt in the Taiwan Open semi-finals, although he was then paired up with junior shuttler Chan Wen Tse. In the first round of the Japan Open, Tang Jie-Ee Wei got off to a solid start with a 21-15, 21-19 win over Canada's Kevin Lee-Josephine Wu. Also bidding for a place in the quarter-finals are husband-and-wife duo Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, who will face Singapore's Terry Hee and his new partner Jin Yu Jia. Soon Huat-Shevon barely broke a sweat in their opener, cruising past Thailand's Ruttanapak Oupthong-Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat 21-15, 21-10. Meanwhile, Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin will have their work cut out for them when they go up against defending champions and second seeds Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin of China. Pang Ron-Su Yin are still trying to find their rhythm but showed resilience in their first-round win over the United States' Presley Smith-Jennie Gai, coming through 21-19, 12-21, 21-16. The Malaysians can draw confidence from their last meeting with Zhenbang-Yaxin at the China Masters last November, where they pulled off an upset to register their first win in three encounters. The only Malaysian pair to bow out in the opening round were Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien, who went down 9-21, 8-21 to Japan's Yuichi Shimogami-Sayaka Hobara.

Pearly-Thinaah dispatch European champions in Tokyo

KUALA LUMPUR: Women's doubles Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah made a confident start at the Japan Open by beating reigning European champions Gabriela Stoeva-Stefani Stoeva to reach the second round in Tokyo on Wednesday. Fresh off signing a new contract to remain with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), the world No. 3 needed just 31 minutes to dispatch the world No. 16 Bulgarian sisters 21-16, 21-14 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Pearly-Thinaah inked a lucrative deal last week that will keep them under BAM's banner through to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The Malaysians will next face either Taiwan's Hsieh Pei Shan-Hung En Tzu or the United States' Francesca Corbett-Jennie Gai in the second round.
