'She's My Bahu': Karisma Kapoor Was ‘Family' To Amitabh Bachchan Before Engagement To Abhishek Bachchan

Before Karisma Kapoor married Sunjay Kapur, she was engaged to Abhishek Bachchan. Amitabh Bachchan had once opened up on welcoming her as the Bachchan bahu.
Long before Karisma Kapoor married Sunjay Kapur, and long before her name was tied to headlines for anything else, she was just a step away from officially becoming a Bachchan. In an old interview, Amitabh Bachchan opened up about his son Abhishek's then-upcoming wedding plans with Karisma Kapoor — a wedding that, as we know today, never happened.
Back then, things were moving slowly, but surely. When asked whether Abhishek and Karisma's wedding would be a big, star-studded affair, Amitabh told Rediff, 'Not necessarily. The two families have to sit down together and see what kind of a wedding we both want, work out a date, etc. Babita [Karisma's mother] is away in New Zealand with her younger daughter Kareena."
Both families were spread out across the globe due to work commitments. Kareena and Abhishek were shooting together in New Zealand for Sooraj Barjatya's Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon, while Karisma's father Randhir Kapoor was in Mauritius shooting Armaan, a film that also featured Amitabh Bachchan.
'As soon as they return, we will sit down to find out what we want and what the kids have in mind. Then we will go ahead with the wedding," he had said at the time.
For Amitabh, the engagement itself had already felt like the biggest celebration. He had said, 'What better gift for my birthday than to see my son engaged? If both families agree then we shall certainly do it. It all depends on what Daboo and Babita want."
But the most memorable moment from the interview was when Amitabh referred to Karisma not as a future daughter-in-law, but already part of the family. 'To be very honest, as far as I am concerned, for all practical purposes Lolo [Karisma] has already come home. She is my bahu, and part of our home. But yes, certain formalities have to be obviously observed."
As for the wedding date, everything seemed to hinge on logistics. He said, 'As soon as we arrive at a mutually convenient date. I will have to take the opinion of all concerned. These are all social formalities. Like I said, for me, Lolo is already part of our family."
However, things didn't go as planned. The engagement was eventually called off, and years later, Karisma married Sunjay Kapur.
Karisma married Sunjay in 2003, and they have two children named Kiaan and Samaira Kapoor. Their marriage ended in divorce, and Sunjay passed away in June 2025.
Abhishek Bachchan married Aishwarya Rai in 2007, and they have a daughter named Aaradhya Bachchan.

Nagarjuna Slapped Me 15 Times, Apologised Later, Recalls Isha Koppikar: ‘I Had Marks On My Face'

Last Updated: While filming the 1998 movie Chandralekha opposite Nagarjuna, Isha revealed that she was slapped multiple times at her own request in order to bring authenticity to a scene. Isha Koppikar recently opened up about a shocking behind-the-scenes moment from her early acting days. While filming the 1998 movie Chandralekha opposite South superstar Nagarjuna, Isha revealed that she was slapped multiple times at her own request in order to bring authenticity to a scene. Speaking to Hindi Rush, Isha said, 'I got slapped by Nagarjuna. I was a fully committed actor that I want to perform in a real, method way. So when he was slapping me, I couldn't feel it. This was my second film, so I told him 'Nag, you really slap me.' He said, 'Are you sure? No, I can't.' I said, 'I want that feeling. I am not feeling it right now.' So he slapped me, but softly." Isha explained that she was unable to capture the anger required for the scene, and the camera wasn't catching her expression properly. As a result, the director kept asking for more takes. In the process, she ended up being slapped 14–15 times. 'In an attempt to look angry, I got slapped 14 times," she said. By the end of the shoot, Isha had visible marks on her face. She added, 'I literally had marks on my face. Bechara mujhe leke baitha, bola sorry (Poor guy, he apologised to me). I said, 'I asked for it, why are you saying sorry?'" While the incident may sound extreme, Isha's candid admission reveals the intense dedication many actors commit to for a role—especially early in their careers. The scene required a raw emotional response, and Isha felt method acting was the only way to achieve it. Isha Koppikar, known for her performances in films like Krishna Cottage, Pinjar, Kya Kool Hain Hum, and Don, was most recently seen in the Tamil sci-fi film Ayalaan (2024). Despite having worked across multiple industries, this moment from her second film remains one of the most unforgettable in her journey. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
