What could change in Team India's playing XI for Lord's Test?

After a gorgeous victory at Edgbaston, it is now time for Team India to shift focus on the upcoming 3rd Test, which is scheduled to take place at the Mecca of Cricket, Lord's. The contest will begin on Thursday, July 10, 2025. As playing and scripting something remarkable at this venue holds immense value in the life of a cricketer, one can expect further elevation in the level of cricket displayed till now. Both sides will look to field their strongest eleven and hence both teams can make changes in the playing XI.

Bumrah will likely replace Prasidh
While Team India may not want to tweak the winning combination, a couple of modifications are still expected. Jasprit Bumrah, who did not feature in the 2nd Test, will likely return to spearhead the bowling attack again. He is expected to replace Prasidh Krishna, who has had a torrid time in both Tests. Krishna was quite expensive in the 1st innings at Edgbaston. He went wicket-less and 72 runs were hammered off him in just 13 overs. He had some resurgence in the 2nd innings, as he bowled 14 overs this time and gave away just 39 runs, picking up one scalp as well. Nevertheless, with Bumrah set to be available, Prasidh may sit out at Lord's.

Big question mark on Nitish Kumar Reddy
Nitish Kumar Reddy hasn't been inspirational with the bat and has been quiet with the ball too. Thus, he could be replaced in the 3rd Test. However, the question is who will come in at his place? Shardul Thakur presents a case and so does Kuldeep Yadav, but Thakur's inclusion will give depth in batting, and hence Shardul will carry some weight-age in case Reddy gets benched. On the other hand, Kuldeep Yadav has emerged as a primary wicket-taker for India in the white ball formats, thus he deserves a chance to showcase his mettle in the white jersey as well.
However the bottom line is that, since India are coming off a victory at Edgbaston, coach Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill may not want to experiment with the balance of the squad.

At the same time, its brand value has risen 14% to nearly $4 billion (about Rs 33,000 crore), a report by NYSE-listed investment bank Houlihan Lokey, which has valued several sports franchises around the world, showed. The year also saw 2025 IPL winner Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking the top slot in terms of brand value among the 10 teams that compete in the league. The first-time winner in the league's 18-year history has a brand value of $269 million. In the brand valuation table, RCB is followed by Mumbai Indians at $242 million, Chennai Super Kings at $235 million and Kolkata Knight Riders at $227 million. "IPL continues to redefine sports commercialisation - not just in terms of cricketing excellence but through record auctions, landmark sponsorships, technological advancements, and an ever-expanding international footprint," the report said about the league's recent expansions and business growth. Calling IPL "a global phenomenon" that is at the intersection of sport, entertainment, and commerce, the report said that the league's "influence now extends far beyond the cricketing fraternity, reshaping fan engagement, commercial models, and the structure of the sport itself". The report pointed out that IPL's success has also catalysed a proliferation of short-format leagues across continents, "redefining the modern cricketing calendar and embedding itself as a cornerstone of contemporary popular culture". The report by Houlihan Lokey also estimated that the advertising revenue during the 2025 IPL had jumped a massive 50% to about $600 million (about Rs 5,000 crore). And in terms of viewership, the final match between RCB and Punjab Kings recorded over 678 million views, a number that was higher than the India-Pakistan clash during the ICC Championship in Feb this year, the report said. On IPL's revenue model, the report said that it represented "a near-perfect blend of predictable cash flows and cost discipline, a rarity in the global sports asset universe. "Revenues are underwritten by BCCI's long-term, well-negotiated media rights contracts and front-loaded sponsorship deals, creating annuity-like cash flows." For top franchisees, almost 80% of the costs are secured even before the tournament begins. "On the cost side, the presence of a salary cap (Rs 120 crore per team) functions as an embedded margin protector, preventing wage inflation (a major concern for global sports teams) and ensuring competitive parity among teams." In terms of costs and revenue models, IPL is seen to be superior to the English Premier League (EPL) of the UK and the National Basketball Association (NBA) of the US, the report noted. "For institutional investors, this makes the IPL not just a sports league but a high-growth compounder in the entertainment space, catering to a fast-growing fan base with rising disposable income and a strong appetite for premium digital experiences. Just two months ago, his elder sister was diagnosed with cancer which he disclosed publicly on Sunday night, after the world got to know about his ability in foreign conditions. 'Every time I had the ball in my hand, her thoughts would cross my mind," he revealed on live TV, holding back tears. 'This performance is dedicated to her. I want to tell her, 'Sis, we are all with you.'" Indeed, the hard work and the grind paid off, portraying him as one of the lethal weapons in India's artillery. But picking him at the right time was the key. Ahead of the second Test, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan had told cricketnext that if India are not playing Bumrah in Birmingham, they should get in Akash Deep. It's safe to say now that his prediction was spot on. 'I think, Akash Deep is a right guy [if Bumrah doesn't play]. He is a very much Shami kind of a bowler who has got a straight seam. He can actually beat the batters with surprise. He has got off the pitch zip. So, he is the guy who should be playing and if Bumrah is not playing, great," Pathan had told CricketNext at a select media interaction.
