Bumrah returns to nets during Saturday's session ahead of 2nd Test, bowls full tilt

Edgbaston [UK], June 28 (ANI): Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah returned to the nets on Saturday during the optional training session ahead of the second Test against England at Birmingham, bowling for at least half an hour. However, a final call on Bumrah's participation during the second Test is yet to be taken, as per ESPNCricinfo. Before the series, team management had made it clear that the superstar bowler will feature in only three out of five matches, with skipper Shubman Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir staying tight-lipped about which matches he will play. The final call will be taken on how good Bumrah feels about his body going into the Test. During his net session, he went full tilt after not bowling on Friday. Everyone turned up for the practice session except for India's centurions from the first Test at Leeds, skipper Shubman Gill, vice-captain Rishabh Pant, openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal. During the nets session, the main focus was giving a lot of batting practice to bowlers as during the Leeds Test, India faced collapses in both innings, losing their last seven wickets for 41 runs in the first innings and last six wickets for 31 in the second innings. This proved to be a massive factor in their five-wicket loss as England successfully chased down 371 runs. Over the last two tours in England, India's last four partnerships have averaged 19.11 in 2021 and 16.35 in 2018. India will be now aiming to get better contributions from their lower order at Birmingham. Now, India will be having a day off on Sunday before returning for another training session on Monday. On the day before the match, they will take things easy and most likely, batters seeking some throwdowns will turn up. Pacers who are likely to play in Wednesday are likely to get a Tuesday off from practice. India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. Neeraj Chopra Backs This Indian Cricket Star To Excel In Javelin Throw. Not Virat Kohli Or Hardik Pandya

India's world champion and Olympic gold medalist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra feels that Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah can excel in his discipline. Neeraj will be in action during the Neeraj Chopra Classic at Bengaluru on July 5. Ahead of the event, he was quoted as saying by to Star Sports, "I think it would be a fast bowler (A good javelin thrower from other sport), for sure. So, I think a fully fit Jasprit Bumrah, in his prime, will be good at it." Fast bowlers and javelin throwers both require a strong, steady run-up to build momentum. Good speed and timing are extremely important, so are powerful legs, core and shoulders for an explosive finish. Bumrah is currently the top-ranked Test bowler in the world and a massive part of India's pace attack. In the recent Leeds Test against England, he took a five-wicket haul in the first innings and went wicketless while defending 371 runs for the team. On the other hand, Chopra reclaimed his number one spot in men's javelin throw world rankings from Anderson Peters of Grenada following a string of brilliant performances on the international stage. World Athletics updated the rankings earlier this week, increasing Neeraj's points to 1,445 compared to Peters' tally of 1,431, according to Also, Pakistan's Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem sits at number four with 1,370 points to his name. Neeraj lost his top spot to Peters back in September 2024, just shortly after the Paris Olympics, where he attained a silver medal with a throw of 89.45, and Peters took home the bronze. The year 2025 has been incredible for Neeraj, as he kickstarted with a win at the Potch Invitational in Potchefstroom, South Africa, in April and followed it up with a very special second-place finish at Doha Diamond League, where he crossed the 90-metre mark for the first time ever with a throw of 90.23 m. He also went on to secure a second spot in the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland later that month and resumed his winning ways with back-to-back titles at Paris Diamond League and Ostrava Golden Spike this month, with best efforts of 88.16 m and 85.29 m.

India's faced with the Edgbaston barrier and other questions

London: Edgbaston in Birmingham, the car-manufacturing hub in England's west Midlands, is where India will play the second match of the five Test series. In their eight appearances at this venue since 1967, India have lost seven times – amounting to a veritable crematorium of Indian cricket. The only occasion when they held a whip hand – in 1986 – the temperamental English weather denied them victory. India speahead Jasprit Bumrah could be rested for the second Test between India and England starting at Edgbaston on July 2 (AP) Whether by design or not, the first Test at Headingley and the upcoming one were potential hurdles for India's comparatively unseasoned top-order batters. In the event, the feared cold and cloudy weather of Leeds was overtaken by glorious sunshine and a relatively placid pitch. This presented India a golden opportunity to extend their triumphs here of 1986 and 2002, which they squandered. Yashasvi Jaiswal replicated his feats in the West Indies and Australia by recording a century in his first Test in England as well, though his catching resurfaced as a matter of concern. Shubman Gill, unhindered by the task of captaining India for the first time at the highest level of the game, dismissed his previous average of 14.66 in England with an untroubled hundred. Rishabh Pant, notwithstanding his high risk shot-making, blazed to centuries in both innings with the speed of his eyes and willow. Yet, India disappointed in the bowling department, where they were expected to excel – spearheaded as they are by presently the planet's most unplayable paceman, Jasprit Bumrah. They ran out of steam in the decisive fourth innings as England for the second consecutive Test against India at home comfortably chased down 370 plus. The Indian attack was almost the same at Edgbaston in 2022 – when England breezed to 378/3 to win - bar Prasidh Krishna replacing Mohammed Shami. In the once industrial suburb of Headingley – it would metamorphose into a batting paradise on a sunny day – Australia in 1948, inspired by an unbeaten 173 from Don Bradman, accumulated 404/3 in the final venture to post a win. The record remained unsurpassed until 28 years later when India subdued it by compiling 406/4 at Port of Spain. The reversal earlier this week meant back-to-back defeats at a venue where in 1952 India endured the ignominy of being zero for four in the face of Freddie Trueman, a fiery barrel–chested coalminer-cum-fast bowler on his debut. Only Vijay Manjrekar and Vijay Hazare, with 133 and 89, could cope with him. Fifty years on, that bitter memory was wiped clean when India amassed 628/8 in initially challenging batting conditions at the same stadium, before spin twins Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh delivered the coup de grace. Left-arm Ravindra Jadeja, the front-line spinner in the Indian XI in the just-concluded match, failed to accurately target a rough outside the left-hander's off-stump on the fifth day, thereby licensing Ben Duckett to plunder runs. Besides, a paltry four overs of bowling in IPL outings as a build-up to the Test was not appropriate preparation. The Indian bowlers' lack of penetration in the second innings, Bumrah not excluded, called into question their Test match fitness. In County championship fixtures at Edgbaston this season, either the quicker bowlers have dominated or games have been high scoring; until earlier this week, when spinners came into their own. The present forecast, not to be taken as gospel, predicts dry weather for the duration of the Test, but cool temperatures. A stage for seamers to flourish, though a quality spinner too can thrive, as Ravichandran Ashwin demonstrated in 2018 by emerging the most successful bowler on either side. Where India, bookmakers' underdogs in the series, had ample chance of upsetting the applecart in the opening encounter, they now have headaches aplenty before the next clash starting on July 2. Does Bumrah need to rest? If, though, endurance is an issue, only more bowling will restore stamina. Neither Mohammed Siraj nor Prasidh is able to swing the ball away from middle or off-stump. In England, they cannot overly bank on reverse swing either. Prasidh in particular would do well to adhere to a good length as English wickets are rarely hard enough for regular bouncers. In contrast, Arshdeep Singh is an orthodox mover of the ball in the air, albeit at lesser pace. It's an unenviable conundrum. A threat of reshuffles unsettles a squad, as it did in Australia last winter. After his promising performance Down Under, allrounder Nitish Reddy looked no worse than Shardul Thakur as a bowler in the Indian A outings that preceded the Tests, and distinctly better with the bat. Historically, England, more accustomed to finger spin, have struggled against wrist spin. Kuldeep's second coming, with a superior variety of flight and faster deliveries, not to mention a more controlled googly, renders him a weapon worth unleashing. The Indian batting is, admittedly, in transition. However, rather disturbingly, India have lost seven of their last nine Tests. So, if Gautam Gambhir doesn't speedily gain control, his continuance as head coach would, arguably, begin to look partisan.

Cues from Birmingham nets: Jasprit Bumrah keeps everyone guessing, Kuldeep Yadav gives it a rip!

Jasprit Bumrah during the net session. (Pic credit: Sahil Malhotra/ in Birmingham: Right from the moment he stepped into the nets area of the Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Jasprit Bumrah meant business. Soon after covering the little walk, he picked up a ball and the trademark shoulder click - right goes up and left goes down as he walks - he was standing on top of his mark in the centre net. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Just a few gentle deliveries followed as he began warming up for what was going to be an intense spell of fast bowling. With every delivery, the pace increased and he was loose enough, the measuring tape was out to mark his run-up for a 20-minute burst at full tilt. With Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant taking a break from today's session, Bumrah bowled to the likes of Sai Sudharsan, Ravindra Jadeja and Karun Nair in the nets. Jasprit Bumrah Unleashes Heat in the Nets | IND vs ENG 2nd Test Prep He beat the batters with ease, tested them with accuracy and kept them on their toes with different angles - around the wicket for left-handers and using the width of the crease for the right-handers. More than the skills, it was how he looked mentally very fresh and the three-day break from bowling clearly helped the 31-year-old who was bowling with Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna in tandem. Poll Should Kuldeep Yadav be included in the playing XI for the second Test? Yes, definitely No, he should wait Depends on Bumrah's fitness The trio, which featured in the Headingley Test, didn't do any bowling during the team's first practice in Birmingham on Friday but trained with a lot of purpose on the second day. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Eat 1 Teaspoon Every Night, See What Happens A Week Later [Video] getfittoday Undo Each of them bowled for around thirty minutes and then later padded up for an extended hit in the nets. Siraj worked on leaves, ducks and forward defence with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak while Bumrah kept shuffling nets for a taste of everything which was on offer. Starting from side-armers to slow bowlers to some throwdowns, Bumrah was very focussed during his long session. There was plenty of shadow practice when he waited for his turn to bat and from the horrible start in the far most net, the right-hander grew in confidence after he played a few deliveries and looked assured before ending the long day. Jasprit Bumrah: India's Spearhead Locked In for 2nd Test? Business as usual continued in the other nets as Ravindra Jadeja continued to bat, Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep continued to make an impression, and Kuldeep Yadav continued to work on both batting and bowling. While the door for either Akash or Arshdeep depends on Bumrah's availability, Kuldeep is leaving no stone unturned as far as preparation is concerned. The chinaman bowls, bats and takes a lot of feedback from both the support staff and other players in the team. He doesn't shy away from trying new angles or varying lengths and the dry weather in Birmingham could force the Indian team management to look his way for the second Test next week. Physically, he is looking as good as he has in the recent past and the bowling rhythm is very evident from the way he is bowling in the nets right from the pre-match sessions in Leeds before the series opener. He had a very gripping contest with Gill on eve of the first Test and continues to enjoy his battles with India batters in Birmingham. Kuldeep Yadav spins it tight at Edgbaston It's not just the bowling he is working on as hours have been spent honing his batting under the watchful eyes of head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. For the last 18 months, Kuldeep has been making a very serious effort to get his act sorted with the bat and he is desperate to start making meaningful contributions for the side with the bat too. After two days under the sun, the side will now have a break and will regroup for on June 30. The bowlers can put their feet up and relax, and bowling coach Morne Morkel can resume his WWE with Arshdeep and Akash Deep in the team hotel. As far as Bumrah is concerned, the suspense will continue, at least for the next 48 hours. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.
