‘We're doing well': Hansi Flick says Barcelona are focussed on El Clasico against Real Madrid after UCL defeat to Inter Milan

Indian Express10-05-2025
Manager Hansi Flick on Saturday said that Barcelona are ready to move on from their Champions League semifinal defeat against Inter Milan and concentrate on their upcoming clash against La liga title rivals Real Madrid. Barcelona will be keen for a win here as a victory against Real and then another win next week will ensure that they win the La Liga title for the 28th time.
'We're doing well. After the defeat in Milan, everyone knows it's not easy… but we're doing things right. We've talked about what we want to do in these two weeks. There are four more games to go. El Clasico is important, we have to show how well we can play. We have to show confidence. The players are doing very well… We've been talking about what they are thinking, what they are feeling' Flick said.
'We had to talk about it as a group. Everyone knows that in a Clasico you have to give 100%. You have to be active, intense, dominant. Real Madrid is a very good team, and we need the fans,' he added.
Flick also addressed the criticism his side often face due to the use of a high line while defending.
'When we started, I was clear about the philosophy… There have been games, especially at the beginning, where we saw doubts, but the team has adapted well. They have also been improving and are happy with the style and how we want to play. When you see the quality of the players you are happy.'
The German also praised defender Inigo Martinez while also adding that striker Robert Lewandowski, returning from a hamstring injury, and full back Alejandro Balde would not start against Real.
'He likes to play deeper, and it's unbelievable to see how he's adapted. He's a leader and focuses on winning every game. He works hard in every training session. He shares his positive feelings with his teammates and he is a fighter. A great leader,' he said about Inigo Martinez.
'Gerard Martin and the rest of the players are doing very well. After this match, we have three more games left. Maybe they (Lewandowski and Balde) will get minutes in the second half, I think Balde is ready for that,' he added.

Alexander Isak To Return To Newcastle United Training Camp Amid Transfer Saga: Report

Alexander Isak will rejoin Newcastle United's training after a solo stint at Real Sociedad. Newcastle rejected Liverpool's £110m bid, but Isak remains keen to leave. Alexander Isak is expected to return to the UK this week and rejoin Newcastle United's training setup following a solo stint at his former club Real Sociedad. The Swedish striker was working individually at the Zubieta training facility in the Basque Country but is now preparing to report back to Newcastle's base, as per reports from The Athletic. However, most of the first-team squad, along with manager Eddie Howe, are currently in Asia for the club's pre-season tour, which includes a high-profile friendly against Tottenham Hotspur in Seoul, South Korea. Newcastle Reject Liverpool's £110m Bid Isak's return coincides with a major development in his transfer saga. As first reported by The Athletic, Newcastle recently rejected a formal £110 million bid from Liverpool, who had expressed a strong interest in signing the 24-year-old this summer. The Merseyside club had initially made an informal approach earlier in July, suggesting they were prepared to go as high as £120 million, but stopped short of matching Newcastle's valuation, which is believed to be around £150 million. While Newcastle have made efforts to persuade Isak to stay — including offering him a new contract with a release clause effective from next summer — the striker's position has remained unchanged. Sources close to the club suggest Isak has made it clear for some time that he wishes to explore a move away from St James' Park. In a further indication of his intentions, Isak was excluded from the squad travelling to Asia for pre-season preparations. Instead, the forward opted to maintain his fitness privately in Spain, away from the spotlight, while continuing discussions around his future. Newcastle will return to the Champions League this season for the first time in two decades — a compelling prospect for most players, but one that may not be enough to keep Isak, who appears set on a move to a bigger European club. Newcastle have also attempted to lean on senior squad members to help sway Isak's decision, but to no avail so far. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Transfer News: Newcastle United Sign Aaron Ramsdale From Southampton On Loan

Last Updated: Newcastle United signed ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton on a season-long loan to reunite with manager Eddie Howe. Newcastle United have signed former Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton on a season-long loan, announced the Premier League club on Saturday. The 27-year-old England goalkeeper, who made the second-most saves in the league last season with 125, previously worked with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe during his time at Bournemouth. On signing for Newcastle United, Ramsdale said: 'It's great to be here. I've always loved coming here and I've seen how passionate and loud the fans can be. I've always loved playing here at St. James' Park – I've not always had the greatest of results, but when the fans get behind you it's some place. 'Coming to the stadium and seeing it empty today, it's quite surreal to think that this is going to be home for the foreseeable future. I've got the kit on, it's got the nice Champions League badge on the sleeve and I'm delighted to be here. 'Working with the manager and his coaching staff again were a big draw for me. They've already had a great influence on my career and the gaffer turned me from a man into a professional footballer at Bournemouth. He really showed me the ropes so the manager and his coaching staff were a huge selling point for me to come here." What Did Newscastle United Boss Say? Head coach Eddie Howe said: 'Aaron is an exceptional goalkeeper who adds further quality and international experience to our squad. 'Having worked with him before, I know what he can bring to us on and off the pitch, so we look forward to welcoming him into the group." Newcastle, who finished fifth last season to secure a Champions League spot, will begin their Premier League campaign with a visit to Aston Villa on August 16. Ramsdale joined Southampton from Arsenal last year on a contract valid until June 2028. He joined Arsenal from Sheffield United in 2021, spending two seasons as their first choice and helping them to a runner-up finish in the 2022-23 Premier League before losing his starting place to David Raya the following year. After securing promotion, Southampton were relegated last season, marking Ramsdale's third top-flight relegation after previous drops with Bournemouth in 2019-20 and Sheffield United in 2020-21. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 2.5 Years In Prison For Raul Asencio? Prosecutors Seeks Jail Term For Accused Real Madrid CB: Report

Spanish prosecutors seek a 2.5-year prison sentence for Real Madrid's Raul Asencio for distributing a minor's sex tape. Asencio denies wrongdoing. Spanish prosecutors have requested a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio, who is accused of involvement in the unauthorized distribution of a sex tape involving a minor. According to The Athletic, the charges stem from an incident in June 2023 during a holiday in the Canary Islands, where several former Real Madrid youth players were allegedly involved in filming a sexual encounter without consent and sharing the footage. Five players from Real Madrid's youth academy were vacationing at Amadores Beach Club when a sexual encounter allegedly took place between three of the players and two girls — one of whom was under 16, the legal age of consent in Spain. The footage was allegedly recorded on a mobile phone without the knowledge or consent of the victims. The tape is believed to have later circulated via WhatsApp. Although Asencio was not involved in the encounter itself, the Public Prosecutor's Office claims that he requested copies of the videos and showed them to a friend. Under Spanish law, such an action could constitute two offenses against privacy, as defined in Article 197 of the Spanish Criminal Code. Asencio, now 22, was promoted from Real Madrid Castilla (the club's B team) to the senior squad in November 2023 during a defensive injury crisis. He made 46 appearances across all competitions last season, becoming a regular member of Carlo Ancelotti's matchday squads. The investigation began after the three players allegedly involved in the recording — Ferran Ruiz, Juan Rodríguez, and Andrés García — were arrested in September 2023. Initially, Asencio was called to testify as a witness, but was later included in the Guardia Civil's (Spain's national law enforcement) investigation. At the time, Real Madrid issued a brief statement: 'A Castilla player and three Real Madrid C players have given statements to the Guardia Civil regarding a complaint about the alleged broadcasting of a private video via WhatsApp. When the club has detailed knowledge of the facts, we will take the appropriate measures." According to reports from The Athletic, both alleged victims are receiving psychological treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. The Prosecutor's Office has requested that Asencio pay €5,000 in damages to each victim, in addition to the proposed custodial sentence. The prosecution is also pursuing prison terms for the three other players involved. The case is currently under judicial review, and no trial date has been set. In response to the charges, Asencio has strongly denied any wrongdoing and emphasized the importance of the presumption of innocence. The Spaniard added that he intends to defend his position in court, should the case move forward. Sources close to the club suggest that Madrid are awaiting further legal clarification before deciding on Asencio's future at the Bernabéu. tags : la liga real madrid view comments Location : New Delhi, India, India First Published: August 02, 2025, 19:22 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
