HPL concludes maintenance turnaround with technological innovations, enhanced safety
Starting from April, this meticulously planned 45-day maintenance and upgrade operation signifies a pivotal step in the company's pursuit of operational excellence, technological enhancement, achieving higher throughput on a continuous basis and environmental sustainability.
The turnaround has yielded multiple advantages for HPL, including improved infrastructure reliability, heightened safety standards, and a technological framework that supports future growth and innovation.
Improvements in equipment and process efficiency will yield higher product output, reduced fuel consumption, and lower CO₂ emissions, contributing to both operational excellence and sustainability. All statutory requirements for safety inspections and testing were met, ensuring compliance and long-term operational security.
The turnaround was marked by outstanding planning and safety protocols, encompassing the deployment of over 11,000 workers at peak times. Extensive training initiatives contributed over 27,000 man-hours, ensuring all personnel were prepared for operations in high-risk environments.
HPL prioritised the well-being of all participants, providing continuous medical support, access to clean drinking water, ORS supplies, and rigorous safety measures, including fire detection systems, gas leak sensors, and strict compliance with personal protective equipment (PPE) standards.

Angel pre-seed funding: Rs 42.77 lakh for KSUM startup Othor AI
Kochi, July 4 (UNI) Innovative vertical AI startup Othor AI has raised Rs 42.77 lakh (USD 50,000) in a follow-up pre-seed funding round, hiking the KSUM-registered company's total early-stage funding to Rs 68.40 lakh (USD 80,000), five months after an initial raise of Rs 25 lakh (USD 30,000). The latest round attracted significant participation from prominent names such as Whatfix Co-founder Vara Kumar Namburu, data analytics pioneer Madan Galla and angel investor Mithun Nair. Othor AI, which was founded by Unni Koroth and Nekender Shekhawat in September 2024, continues to gain traction with its specialised vertical AI agents designed for daily business decisions and planning. The company has shown progress since the launch of its beta version in January this year, with the product now having signed agreements with multiple design partners to validate and showcase its value proposition. Koroth said the rapid early traction validates the company's vision of AI-native business intelligence. 'Investors of this calibre joining our journey give us tremendous confidence as we push towards product-market fit,' he observed. 'Our momentum reflects a growing demand for AI-native solutions in the business intelligence space. Organisations seek faster, simpler and more secure alternatives to conventional BI and planning solutions.' The fresh capital will be strategically deployed to accelerate the company's path to product-market fit and prepare both the company and team for an upcoming seed funding round. Additionally, the funding will support Othor AI's ambitious plans for US market entry, positioning the company for international expansion. Koroth previously founded Foradian, widely recognised as a success story in the Indian startup ecosystem. After exiting the Bangalore-based ed-tech firm in 2019, he spent three years at SaaS-based digital adoption platform Whatfix before embarking on his newest entrepreneurial journey with Othor AI. Meghalaya has made progress in execution of hydro projects: Minister
Shillong, July 4 (UNI) Meghalaya Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal said the state government has made progress towards execution of different hydroelectric projects to meet state's power requirements. Mondal said the government is proposing to revive the Kynshi hydroelectric project and securing the clearance for setting up the 210-MW Leshka Stage-II hydroelectric project. In 2022, the government had decided to cancel the agreement signed with Athena Power Pvt Ltd and the JayPee Group for the construction of 270MW Kynshi Stage 1 and 325MW Kynshi Stage 2 hydro projects after the power developers expressed their inability to move forward with the project. Mondal said the government is optimistic in reviving the long-stalled Kynshi hydro power project to its original Run-of-River (RoR) configuration after years of uncertainty and delay to enhance power requirement in the state. The implementation of the Kynshi project, originally awarded to M/s Athena Pvt Ltd, was delayed due to lack of provisions in the state's power policy to convert the project into a hybrid model, combining RoR and Pump Storage Project (PSP) 'The old MoU (memorandum of understanding) was based only on the run-of-river model. As they wanted to add the PSP component, and since our earlier power policy didn't include PSP, the cabinet decided to scrap the old MoU. Now, they want to revert to the original RoR model without the PSP. So, we'll have to take it to cabinet again to reinstate the old MoU,' Mondal said. He clarified that no fresh MoU has been signed yet, but the government plans to revive the old one. On Thursday, members of the Joint Committee of Local People on Kynshi Hydro Power Project (JCLPKHPP) met Mondal and demanded that the state government expedite the implementation of the Kynshi project. 'The most important thing is that the local people from those areas now want to cooperate with the government and the agency that will execute the project. I am very optimistic because we need more power generation. Without generation, we cannot enhance our power position,' the Power Minister said. With regard to the Rs 2,100 crore Leshka hydro power project stage-II, Mondal said the final hurdle in the project is expected to be cleared this year. 'The 210 MW RoR project has already cleared 11 out of 12 chapters, including environment and forest clearances, required for its implementation. The remaining chapter is the most critical and challenging one,' he said while expressing optimism that the project will be cleared by the end of the year. UNI RRK PRS

China doesn't want Russia to lose in Ukraine over fears of US turning attention eastwards
Beijing/Brussels, July 4 (UNI) In a meeting with European officials in Brussels, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the European Union's top diplomat on July 2 that Beijing did not want to see a Russian loss in Ukraine because it would give the United States an excuse to direct its full attention eastwards, reports South China Morning Post. Speaking to former Estonian Prime Minister and the current High Representative of the EU, Kaja Kallas, Wang Yi's comments confirmed Brussel's assessment on the Chinese stance on the war, though they also contradict the country's public statements. Europe has long accused China of aiding Moscow's attack on Ukraine, with the three-year-long war being a major point of friction between China and the EU. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has regularly maintained that Beijing is 'not a party' to the war, with Wang Yi rejecting accusations that China was supporting Russia either materially, financially, or militarily, insisting that if it was doing so, the conflict would have ended long ago. Instead, he said that Beijing has championed the role of a peacemaker between Moscow and Kyiv, talking to both parties and mediating between them to end all tensions. However, China has never condemned Russia for its military campaign, and has continued to maintain very positive ties with Moscow, which has been a source of great frustration to Europeans and only furthered their claims. During a marathon four-hour debate on a wide range of geopolitical and commercial grievances, Wang was said to have given Kallas 'several history lessons and lectures.' The tone of the dialogue was nonetheless noted to respectful, even if tense. As per the media agency, Wang Yi told Kallas the two-day summit itself could be cut short – in a hint that Beijing is not happy with how the EU is positioning itself ahead of the event. The bloc is set to blacklist two small Chinese banks for flouting its sanctions on Russia, in its 18th package of measures against Moscow, which is awaiting final approval from its 27 member states. On this point, Wang repeatedly vowed to retaliate if the lenders were ultimately listed.
