Luna stars as USA set up Gold Cup final clash with Mexico

MIAMI: Diego Luna scored both goals as the United States beat Guatemala 2-1 in St Louis on Wednesday to reach the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup where they will face Mexico.
Raul Jimenez struck in the 50th minute as Mexico overcame Honduras 1-0 in Santa Clara, California to reach their fourth straight Gold Cup final.
Luna, an exciting talent who plays for Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer, put the USA ahead in the fourth minute when a Luca de la Torre shot was parried and the 21-year-old pounced to slot home.
The winger, who came up through the ranks of lower-division football in Texas, then doubled the advantage in the 15th minute with a brilliant individual goal.
Luna picked up the ball in midfield and dribbled goalwards, skipping a challenge before firing home from more than 20 yards.
Guatemala striker Rubio Rubin had an effort saved by USA keeper Matt Freese and then another disallowed for offside to the frustration of his team's large and noisy travelling support.
Sebastian Berhalter went close to a third just before the break with a free-kick which deflected off the wall and was well saved by Kenderson Navarro.
Mauricio Pochettino's USA, who came into the tournament on the back of a four-game losing streak, were under increasing pressure from a lively Guatemala after the interval.
It intensified after the Central Americans scored in the 80th minute when Arquimides Ordonez dribbled into the box and 18-year-old Boston-born Olger Escobar fired home.
The home fans held their breath in stoppage time when Jose Morales drilled a low shot from the edge of the box but Freese did well to get down and push the ball wide.
Luna's performances will bolster his chances of making the squad for the World Cup next year even when regular starters such as Christian Pulisic return.
"Every single one of these players think about it the same way I do, that this is the number one dream we had as a kid and we are going to fight to have as many chances to wear (this shirt) as we can," said Luna.
The Californian, of Mexican heritage, was praised by teammate Berhalter for his two crucial goals.
"He does stuff like that, scoring two goals like that in a semi-final, it is why he's him and he's one of the best players in MLS and one of the best players here," he said.
Mexico, looking for a record-extending 10th Gold Cup title, were pushed all the way by an improved and tenacious Honduras but ultimately emerged victorious to set up an eighth final meeting with their North American rivals.
16-year-old Gilberto Mora, the great hope of Mexican football playing just his second game for his country, created the winning goal with some lovely footwork, as he jinked through the Honduras defence before threading a perfect pass to Jimenez.
The Fulham striker made no mistake with a thundering finish to put El Tri in front at Levi's Stadium, the home of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers.
Mexico had the ball in the net again after a free-kick caused chaos and Edson Alvarez turned the ball home but the effort was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Lionel Messi, Inter Miami in talks to extend contract

IN SUMMER 2024, Lionel Messi emphasized that Inter Miami would be the last club he played with in his illustrious career. Now, with his contract set to expire at the end of the MLS season, the Herons are looking to extend Messi's run on the pitch. ESPN reported Friday that Messi and Inter Miami remain in negotiations to extend the contract of the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner beyond 2025. Messi signed with Miami in July 2023 on a 2 1/2-year Designated-Player contract. With the club set to open a new stadium, Miami Freedom Park, for the 2026 season, Inter Miami wants Messi to take part in the housewarming party. Jorge Mas, co-owner of Inter Miami, told ESPN in June that his club would do whatever it takes to keep Messi with the Herons. "I previously said that my wish, my dream would be for the No. 10 to inaugurate our new stadium in March. This is a decision that rests on Messi," Mas said. He added: "I always said that he is a competitive animal, he wants to win. I hope we can raise many trophies together here at Inter Miami in the coming years. Here, we're just waiting to be able to give the fans the good news about Lionel Messi." Since joining the club, Messi led Inter Miami to its first-ever trophies, including the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters' Shield while setting a record for most points in a single season. Miami also advanced to the round of 16 of the current FIFA Club World Cup, after taking second in Group A, but fell to Paris Saint-Germain in the knockout stage. In 38 regular-season MLS games, Messi has 31 goals and 22 assists. He also claimed the 2024 league MVP. — REUTERS

Mexican boxer Chavez Jr arrested by US immigration officers, DHS says

Vasquez-Imagn Images/File Photo MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has been arrested by U.S. immigration officers and faces deportation, the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement on Thursday. Chavez Jr., 39, who lost a bout to influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul on Saturday, had an active arrest warrant against him in Mexico. The DHS said the warrant was related to involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunition and explosives. The department added that Chavez Jr. made "multiple fraudulent statements on his application to become a Lawful Permanent Resident" and was determined to be in the U.S. illegally on June 27. "Under President Trump, no one is above the law - including world-famous athletes," said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. Michael Goldstein, an attorney for Chavez Jr., said his client was detained outside his home by more than two dozen Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and called the allegations "outrageous." "They blocked off his street and took him into custody, leaving his family without knowledge of his whereabouts," Goldstein said in a statement. "Mr. Chavez is a public figure and has been living out in the public and just fought Jake Paul in a televised boxing match before millions of viewers." The Mexican prosecutor's office said in a statement that they had been contacted for the boxer's removal. His fight against Paul played to a sold-out crowd at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, where the 28-year-old American triumphed in a unanimous decision after 10 rounds. The event's joint promoters, MVP Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Chavez Jr. is the son of former three-division world champion Julio Cesar Chavez, an iconic figure in Mexican sports who is widely considered the greatest fighter the country ever produced. Chavez Jr. won the WBC middleweight championship by defeating German Sebastian Zbik in 2011, but lost the title to Argentine Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez in 2012. His career has been overshadowed by numerous controversies and suspensions. In 2009, he tested positive for a banned substance furosemide, resulting in a seven-month suspension and a $10,000 fine. Four years later, the Nevada Athletic Commission fined him $900,000 and imposed a nine-month suspension for failing a drug test. His wife was previously married to Edgar Guzman Lopez, the son of former Sinaloa Cartel leader "El Chapo." Edgar Guzman Lopez was assassinated in 2008. Chavez Jr. currently has a record of 54 wins, six losses and one draw, with 34 knockouts.
