Karnataka Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader seeks Point of Call status to Mangaluru International Airport
This is amid Union Government informing the Lok Sabha in February 2025 that 'new non-metro airports, including Mangaluru, are not being granted Point of Call (PoC) status.' Earlier, Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta had sought PoC status to the airport.
The PoC status enables international airlines to operate to and from an airport.
Strategic location
In his letter to Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu dated June 27, 2025, Union Minister of Civil Aviation, the Speaker said that he is seeking to consider Mangaluru for granting PoC status under the open skies arrangement, particularly for international carriers operating from ASEAN and SAARC countries.
Mr. Khader said that Mangaluru holds strategic importance due to its geographic proximity and strong connectivity with countries in West Asia, Europe, the US, Australia and New Zealand. Granting PoC status to Mangaluru will significantly enhance air connectivity, supporting economic growth, tourism and cultural exchange.
'A large diaspora from coastal Karnataka region resides across ASEAN and SAARC nations and frequently travels to Mangaluru for family reunions, business and cultural engagements. Enhanced connectivity through direct international flights will play a critical role in improving passenger convenience and boosting the local economy,' Mr. Khader, who is also MLA of Mangaluru, said.
The letter added: 'Currently, many foreign carriers operate flights to multiple international airports in neighbouring states such as Kerala. Karnataka, despite its size and economic significance, has only one international airport — in Bengaluru — with PoC status. Therefore, we humbly request that Mangaluru be designated as the second PoC in Karnataka.'
The Speaker said that the PoC status to Mangaluru will facilitate the export of perishable goods, which are in high demand in West Asia and beyond.
Capt. Chowta met Mr. Naidu
Earlier, Capt. Chowta who met Mr. Naidu in Delhi on December 19, 2024 had sought PoC to the airport. In a letter submitted to the Minister, Capt. Chowta said that Dakshina Kannada is a hub for industries such as marine exports, areca nut and cashew processing, and petrochemicals, all of which cater to international markets. Enhanced connectivity will streamline trade, reduce logistical costs, and attract global investments.
Minister's reply to Lok Sabha
However, in a written reply to an unstarred question by Capt. Chowta in the Lok Sabha on February 6, 2025, Murlidhar Mohol, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation said: '...At present, the Government of India promotes more international operations by Indian carriers from non-metro points (airports) either directly or through their own domestic operations. Accordingly, new non-metro points, including Mangaluru, are not being granted as PoC in the Air Services Agreement (ASA) to any foreign country.'

HC rejects bail of man for postagainst PM, Army
Prayagraj: While rejecting the bail application of a man, who is accused of posting objectionable content on social media against the Prime Minister of India and Indian Armed forces, the Allahabad high court observed that the freedom of speech guaranteed under the Constitution does not extend to such acts which disrespect high dignitaries and create disharmony among citizens. Rejecting the bail application of Asharaf Khan alias Nusrat, Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal on Wednesday said that it has become a "fashion among certain groups of people" to misuse social media in the garb of freedom of speech and expression by making unfounded allegations against high dignitaries, posting such material which creates disharmony and hatred among the people. Accused Ashraf Khan, booked under sections 152 (acts that endanger the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India) and 197 (imputations and assertions prejudicial to national integration) of BNS at Sasni police station of Hathras. It is alleged that the accused allegedly uploaded edited videos on his Facebook during the recent India-Pakistan military face-off. According to the prosecution, the accused allegedly posted objectionable content targeting PM Modi, defence minister Rajnath Singh, Army chief and other Army officials, in a bid to defame them. The counsel for the applicant submitted that the applicant is innocent and that the objectionable post had not been forwarded by the applicant, even though it was found on his mobile. On the other hand, the state's counsel argued that the alleged posts on social media created disharmony among people of India and also showed disrespect to Indian Military and Indian Air Force. The court observed, "Though our Constitution gives right to freedom of speech and expression to every citizen, but that freedom does not stretch to permit a person posting videos and other posts disrespecting to the Prime Minister of India, Indian Military and its officers, which on the one hand, causes disharmony among the people of India, and on the other hand, comes within the purview of encouraging the separatism and endangers the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India. Prada had presented a toe ring sandal collection at Milan that was inspired by India's Kolhapuri petitioner is an intellectual property advocate Ganesh Hingmire, who has named the leading global fashion brands that have copied Indian traditional designs like brocade, block printing, bandhani, dressing styles like Sharara and the PIL has also demanded a court-supervised collaboration between Prada and artisan associations for co-branding, capacity building, and revenue-sharing."A legal order in this case will prevent other international companies from imitating or duplicating Indian GI products," the PIL said."Expecting these fragmented artisan groups to individually file civil suits against a global fashion conglomerate is unrealistic and unjust," said Hingmire, justifying the rationale behind the PIL also sought directions to government entities and authorities for forming associations of producers and farming policies for swift intervention against international GI industry body Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA), which had first written a letter to Prada about the issue, thinks that this is a blessing in disguise for the heritage product at the centre of the controversy."We will like Prada to impart technical skills to our artisans and set up an excellence lab not only for chappal but also for other products like the Paithani saree and anklet from Hupari near Kolhapur," said Lalit Gandhi, MACCIA thinks that the protection under the GI law is not so strong at the international level. "We have decided to initiate the process to get a patent as it offers stronger legal protection than GI for all the products that have GI registration," said pointed out that India has successfully fought infringement of GI violation at international level in the case of Darjeeling Tea, whose GI was protected by the Tea Board.
