Govt to restore 'pondok' institutions with new technology, AI, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: The government will restore and elevate the nation's "pondok" institutions in line with modern demands, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He stated that this initiative involves cooperation between the Finance Ministry and the Islamic Development Malaysia Department.
"We want to add new technology, including information technology, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence, so that this bulwark remains the strongest one to defend the faith, morals, and character of the Ummah," he said at the opening ceremony of the 65th International Al-Quran Recital and Memorisation Competition (MTHQA) at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTCKL) on Saturday (Aug 2).
Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
Anwar said history proves that while the country's political, economic, and educational systems bowed to the colonisers, the pondok institutions remained the last bastion defending the identity of the Muslim community.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister also announced that he would launch the Mushaf Ummah Programme, an effort to distribute copies of the Quran, which has been officially translated into 30 world languages, globally on Aug 8.
"In all my travels around the world - to Peru, Brazil, France, Cambodia, and dozens of other countries in recent years - every time I visit, I bring the Quran along with a translation in that country's language, and we distribute it officially. This, I believe, is a good approach," he said.
This year's 65th MTHQA, running from Aug 2 to 9, 2025, features the theme 'Developing a MADANI Ummah' and brings together 71 participants from 49 countries. Malaysia is represented by four participants: Aiman Ridhwan Mohamad Ramlan from Perak and Wan Sofea Aini Wan Mohd Zahidi from Terengganu for the Recital category, while Muhammad Adib Ahmad Rozaini from Perak and Putri Auni Khadijah Mohd Hanif from Kelantan are in the Memorisation category.
The winners of the two categories would receive RM40,000 in cash, the runners-up would get RM30,000, and third place would receive RM20,000, along with jewellery sponsored by the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YaPEIM). – Bernama

Malaysia, Philippines to strengthen strategic cooperation for Asean's future, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and the Philippines are committed to strengthening strategic cooperation to ensure a more peaceful and united future for Asean, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a Facebook post, Anwar said the commitment was among the matters discussed during a phone conversation with Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr on Wednesday (Aug 6). "The discussion also touched on peace and harmony in international waters and border areas, which are our shared priorities for regional stability," he said. Anwar said he also shared positive developments regarding the border negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, which are expected to be finalised this Thursday through the consensus of the two countries' defence ministers during the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) meeting here. The Prime Minister said the development marked another step forward in realising Asean's aspirations of becoming a peaceful, stable and prosperous region. Cambodian Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and acting Thai Defence Minister General Natthaphon Narkphanit, along with armed forces chiefs and government representatives of both countries, are expected to attend the GBC meeting. Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to implement a ceasefire effective midnight on July 28 following a special meeting chaired by Anwar at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya. – Bernama

MP questions ‘secret' gazetting of new KL planning rules
Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said the new planning rules weakened transparency and limited public objections to development projects. PETALING JAYA : DAP's Teresa Kok has criticised the government for 'secretly' gazetting new planning regulations for Kuala Lumpur, which sidelined public consultation and handed excessive power to the city mayor. Kok said civil society organisations only recently became aware of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Planning Rules 2025, which were gazetted on June 13 and took effect three days later. 'I want to ask the government why these new planning rules were gazetted without any public consultation or engagement with stakeholders, especially in the spirit of participatory governance?' She spoke on the issue while debating the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat this evening. Kok said Rule 3 of the new guidelines only required the mayor to consult others if it is deemed necessary, leaving no guarantee of public input. She said the rules, which replace decades-old planning laws, weakened transparency and limited public objections to development projects. She urged the government to review the rules and explain how they were formulated. On education, Kok said the 13MP's focus on TVET was not enough to fix parents' declining confidence in public schools. 'For urban communities, more and more parents are choosing to send their children to private primary and secondary schools, or even resort to homeschooling. 'This is due to a growing lack of confidence in the national education system,' she said, adding that a nationwide survey must be carried out to understand this trend. Kok, who once served as primary industries minister, also spoke on the RM1.4 billion allocation over five years for replanting of oil palm. She said this was insufficient, covering only 0.5% of the country's plantations annually. At RM20,000 per hectare, the allocation allows just 14,000 hectares to be replanted annually, or 28,000ha with a 50% subsidy. 'This allocation fails to meet the minimum 4% annual replanting target,' she said. As such, Kok urged the government to tap windfall tax revenue from the oil palm industry to help smallholders, who work on a quarter of Malaysia's planted area.
