Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal stuns with 4-3 win over Manchester City

Al Arabiyaa day ago
Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal stunned Manchester City 4-3 in extra-time in Orlando on Monday to pull off one of the shocks of the Club World Cup and set up a quarter-final against Brazil's Fluminense.
Marcos Leonardo scored his second of the night in the 112th minute as Simone Inzaghi's side saw off the Premier League club, who had taken a ninth minute lead through Bernardo Silva.
Quick-fire goals from Leonardo and Malcom in six minutes immediately after the restart put Al-Hilal in front before Erling Haaland equalized for City in the 55th minute.
Four minutes into extra-time, Kalidou Koulibaly headed in Ruben Neves' corner to put the Riyadh-based club back in front and while Phil Foden levelled again for City Leonardo netted with seven minutes left to take Al-Hilal through.
'We knew it was a difficult game against one of the best teams in the world,' said Koulibaly. 'We wanted to show our ideas, our talent, our power and I think that we made a very good game.
'Defensively we were very strong and offensively all of the opportunities we could put inside we put in, so we can be happy.'
Portuguese playmaker Silva had put City ahead when he pushed the ball over the line after Renan Lodi's attempted clearance ended up at his feet inside the six-yard box.
Replays showed the ball had brushed the wrist of City's Rayan Ait-Nouri earlier in the move but the referee waved away the Al-Hilal protests.
Al-Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou then made a string of saves to deny City a second before the interval and within seconds of the restart the Saudi club levelled.
Malcom drove down the right and found Joao Cancelo, whose ball into the six-yard box was initially blocked by a sprawling Ederson but Leonardo headed the looping rebound into the unguarded net.
Six minutes later Malcom was released behind the defense by Cancelo's pass from deep inside his own half and the Brazilian showed composure to stroke his shot past Ederson.
The lead was to last only three minutes, however, as Haaland pounced on Silva's corner and the Norwegian was denied a late winner by a desperate clearance on the line from Ali Lajami.
The Saudis went ahead four minutes into extra-time when Koulibaly rose to glance home a header from a corner but City levelled once again, substitutes Rayan Cherki and Foden combining for the England international to steer a sublime first-time volley across Bounou and into the bottom corner.
Al-Hilal would not be denied and Leonardo claimed his second of the night after seeing Ederson save Sergej Milinkovic-Savic's header, the weary Brazilian stumbling as he steered the winner home.

Jobe Bellingham Suspended and Will Miss Out on Club World Cup Reunion With Brother Jude

Jobe Bellingham is suspended for the Club World Cup quarterfinals after picking up a yellow card in Borussia Dortmund's victory against Monterrey, meaning he will miss the chance to face his brother Jude and Real Madrid in the next round. Dortmund plays Madrid at MetLife Stadium on Saturday, but midfielder Jobe will serve a one-match suspension for his second yellow card of the tournament. He was previously booked in the win against Ulsan HD in the group stage. The clash between Dortmund and Madrid would have been a proud moment for the Bellingham family, showcasing the rapid rise of the brothers who were both developed at Birmingham's academy. Jude Bellingham left Birmingham for Dortmund in 2020 at the age of 17 and has gone on to establish himself as one of the world's top players, securing a move to Madrid three years later for a fee that could rise to 139 million. He has already won the Spanish league title and the Champions League with Madrid and is also a key figure for England. Jobe moved from Birmingham to Sunderland in 2023. After helping the team to promotion to the Premier League last season, he followed in his brother's footsteps by signing for Dortmund last month. Jobe has already had an impact at Dortmund, making his debut at the Club World Cup and then scoring his first goal for his new club against Mamelodi Sundowns. Madrid beat Juventus 1–0 to advance to the quarterfinals, and Dortmund beat Monterrey 2–1.

Guirassy Scores Twice and Dortmund Advances at Club World Cup With 2-1 Win Over Feisty Monterrey

Serhou Guirassy scored a pair of first-half goals, both assisted by Karim Adeyemi, and Borussia Dortmund held off Monterrey 2–1 Tuesday night in the final round of 16 game at the Club World Cup. Guirassy drove a shot just inside the left post in the 14th minute, then sent another past keeper Esteban Andrada in the 24th when left unmarked from 15 yards at the top of the penalty area. Both times it was Adeyemi delivering the pass that set up Guirassy, a native of France who plays for Guinea's national team. The 29-year-old striker has three goals in four tournament games and 37 across all competitions in his first season with Dortmund. Dortmund will face Real Madrid on Saturday at East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Spanish power advanced with a 1–0 victory over Italy's Juventus in an afternoon match. Jobe Bellingham received a yellow card in the 28th minute and will miss the match against Real – and his brother, former Dortmund star Jude Bellingham – because of yellow card accumulation. Rayados, cheered by a large contingent of flag-waving supporters in Atlanta, bounced back from the sluggish start to make a game of it. Less than three minutes into second half, a cross to the far post deflected off the head of a Dortmund defender before Érick Aguirre headed it back across the net to Germán Berterame, who headed it in to cut the deficit to a single goal. Using their speed to attack Dortmund vertically, Monterrey dominated the second half and had several chances to level the score. But the German team held on despite the Mexican squad holding a 59 percent edge in possession and a 7–3 advantage in shots on goal. The late game drew a crowd of 31,442 at cavernous Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where the upper deck wasn't needed. But the sweltering US heat wasn't an issue with the roof closed in Atlanta. American Gio Reyna did not play for the third time in four games at the Club World Cup, another sign that his tenure with Dortmund could be winding down. Key moment: Dortmund started strongly thanks to a nifty flick from Adeyemi at the top of the area that set up Guirassy's opening goal. Takeaways: Dortmund's victory means five of the eight clubs in the quarterfinals are from Europe. Monterrey was the last club left from North America. They said it: 'I think I could have scored three goals, at least. But I'm happy I helped the team. The most important thing was to win the game.' – Guirassy. 'We played a fantastic game from the first minute to the last one. … All the players who have been involved in the Premier League and the Spanish competition know the quality of the Mexican teams. We don't need to sell it.' – Monterrey captain Sergio Ramos through an interpreter.
