The need to balance industrial growth & farmers' interests

The State Government took a well-considered decision earlier this week to abandon its plan of acquiring 1,777 acres of fertile land for a proposed defence and aerospace park near the international airport on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
The move provided relief to farmers who have fought a long and difficult battle to protect their livelihood. Their struggle was backed by many prominent scholars, scientists, artists, and public intellectuals.
The move is unlikely to have any major impact on Karnataka's efforts to attract investors and its reputation as one of the most sought-after investment destinations in the country. However, the episode reemphasised the need for careful identification of lands to be acquired for industrial development, especially as the state strives to maintain the lead in the defence and aerospace sector while continuing to woo investors in other sectors as well.
Land acquisition is always a challenge. But why identify a fertile farmland for industrial purposes and push farmers to protest? No doubt, industrial development is essential to spur economic activities and generate employment, but it should not be at the cost of protecting farmers' interests and ensuring food security. Even the government has often made that aspect clear.
Pushback from farmers near Devanahalli and the subsequent decision taken by the government could influence similar demands from farmers in other places. While it may pose a challenge for authorities, it also highlights the need for a more consultative approach, from the time of identifying land, to avoid any conflict with farmers.
As Karnataka makes great strides attracting investments, the demand for land will increase significantly. In the Global Investors Meet [GIM] held earlier this year under the leadership of Industries Minister MB Patil, the state secured commitments of approximately Rs 10.27 lakh crore, of which Rs 4.34 lakh crore have already been converted. The state is in the top position in the country in the defence and aviation industry, with 67% of all aircraft and helicopter manufacturing for defence services and 25% of India's aircraft and spacecraft industries based in Karnataka.
The defence Public Sector Undertaking Hindustan Aeronautics Limited [HAL], being headquartered in Bengaluru, plays a pivotal role in providing a much-needed ecosystem and impetus for the growth in the sector. The presence of several DRDO facilities, multi-national firms, and many top-notch educational institutions also adds to the state's advantage.

ACC Q1FY26 results: Net profit grows 4% amid increased sales volumes

Cement major ACC's consolidated profit (attributable to the owners of the company) for the first quarter of the financial year 2026 (Q1 FY26) declined by 4.4 per cent year-on-year (YoY), to Rs 375.4 crore, amid a 12 per cent growth in sales volume. The cement and clinker volume of Ambuja Cements' subsidiary stood at 11.5 million tonnes, the highest ever in the first quarter for the company. Meanwhile, trade sales volume grew by 6 per cent, and the share of premium products in trade sales stood at 41 per cent, up by 7 percentage points YoY. However, the profit missed the Bloomberg analysts' poll estimate of Rs 547 crore. The company's revenue for the quarter grew by 17.3 per cent YoY, to Rs 6,098.1 crore, amid higher trade sales volume and a higher share of premium products in trade sales. The revenue comfortably surpassed the analysts' estimate of Rs 5,718.1 crore. The company's total expenses for the quarter stood at Rs 5,594.25 crore, up 16.84 per cent YoY. Vinod Bahety, whole-time director and chief executive officer, ACC, said, 'With a purpose-driven accelerated start to the year, our performance reflects the strength of our integrated strategy—anchored in premium sales, operational excellence, cost leadership, and a deep commitment to sustainability. The consistent growth in volumes, efficiency gains, and digital transformation initiatives are enabling us to deliver greater value to our customers and stakeholders.' ACC's operating earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) during Q1 FY26 stood at Rs 778 crore, up by 14.6 per cent. However, its operating EBITDA margin declined to 12.8 per cent in Q1 FY26 from 13.1 per cent in Q1 FY25. Sequentially, the company's revenue declined marginally by 30 basis points, but the profit dipped by 50 per cent. These results come amid an all-India quarterly cement price hike of 6 per cent during the quarter, following a low base from Q1 FY25, which was affected by general elections. According to Elara Capital, the average pan-India cement prices rose by 3 per cent quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) in Q1 FY26 to Rs 377 per bag. Cement demand growth in Q1 FY26 remained strong at 4 per cent, supported by favourable macroeconomic conditions and sustained demand from the housing and infrastructure sectors, the company noted. During Q1 FY26, the company's kiln fuel cost reduced by 10 per cent, thanks to the use of low-cost imported petcoke, improved linkage and captive coal consumption, and synergies with group companies. The company's logistics costs also reduced by 5 per cent to Rs 972 per tonne. "Healthy upticks in volumes, operational efficiency, cost control, and capex management affirm our progress and reinforce our commitment to industry-leading cost competitiveness," the company stated. During the quarter under review, ACC's net worth increased by Rs 228 crore to Rs 18,787 crore as of June 30, 2025. The outlook for Q2 FY26 remains strong. For FY26, cement demand is expected to grow between 6 and 7 per cent due to a rise in demand for affordable housing (both rural and urban) and higher spending on infrastructure and the commercial sector, which includes increased investment in the core and allied infrastructure sectors, ACC noted. Additionally, ACC's shares listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange closed at Rs 1,893.40 per equity share on Thursday (24 July).

Good news for Noel Tata, this company earns Rs 3310000000 in…, to compete with Mukesh Ambani, Isha Ambani's…

Tata Consumer Products Ltd (TCPL), the FMCG arm of the Tata Group, reported a 14.7% rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 331.75 crore for the June quarter, driven by strong performance in its India business. In the same quarter last year, the company had posted a net profit of ₹289.25 crore, according to its regulatory filing. Revenue from operations grew 9.8% year-on-year to Rs 4,778.91 crore, up from Rs 4,352.07 crore in the corresponding period last year. TCPL Q1 Results The growth was led by India business, which was up 11 per cent. Core businesses of tea and salt had a very good quarter, supported by underlying volume gains, TCPL Group Chief Financial Officer Ashish Goenka told PTI in a post-results interaction. In the June quarter, TCPL's overall branded business was up 10.6 per cent to Rs 4,270.9 crore. It was at Rs 3,861.51 crore in the corresponding quarter last fiscal year. TCPL's branded businesses include tea, coffee, water and other various value-added businesses. Its revenue from the branded business in India was up 11 per cent to Rs 3,125.7 crore in the June quarter. 'However, for us, RTD (ready-to-drink) got impacted by unseasonal rain, which has to be seen from the other beverages as well. Apart from higher competitive intensity in that category, the good news there is that we still had a volume growth of 3 per cent,' he said. TCPL's water business had a volume growth of 13 per cent. TCPL International Business Revenue TCPL's international branded business was up 9.44 per cent to Rs 1,145.20 crore. 'On the international side, business continues to grow in line with our expectations. The overall growth on an underlying basis was 5 per cent and within that, the US is coming back on growth,' said Goenka. Besides, TCPL's revenue from non-branded business was at Rs 535.76 crore, up 7.02 per cent during the quarter. This segment includes TCPL's plantation and extraction business of tea and coffee. Total expenses of TCPL in the June quarter were at Rs 4,354.66 crore, up 10.9 per cent. Tata Consumer's total income, which includes other income, was at Rs 4,820.08 crore, up 9.76 per cent. Tata Consumer Products and Reliance Consumer Products are direct competitors in the Indian FMCG market. Reliance Consumer Products has been rapidly expanding and has reached a scale comparable to Tata Consumer Products. But now growth of TCPL can create a challenge in front of Mukesh Ambani, Isha Ambani led Reliance Consumer Products. (With Inputs From PTI)
