The need to balance industrial growth & farmers' interests
The State Government took a well-considered decision earlier this week to abandon its plan of acquiring 1,777 acres of fertile land for a proposed defence and aerospace park near the international airport on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The move provided relief to farmers who have fought a long and difficult battle to protect their livelihood. Their struggle was backed by many prominent scholars, scientists, artists, and public intellectuals. The move is unlikely to have any major impact on Karnataka's efforts to attract investors and its reputation as one of the most sought-after investment destinations in the country. However, the episode reemphasised the need for careful identification of lands to be acquired for industrial development, especially as the state strives to maintain the lead in the defence and aerospace sector while continuing to woo investors in other sectors as well. Land acquisition is always a challenge. But why identify a fertile farmland for industrial purposes and push farmers to protest? No doubt, industrial development is essential to spur economic activities and generate employment, but it should not be at the cost of protecting farmers' interests and ensuring food security. Even the government has often made that aspect clear. Pushback from farmers near Devanahalli and the subsequent decision taken by the government could influence similar demands from farmers in other places. While it may pose a challenge for authorities, it also highlights the need for a more consultative approach, from the time of identifying land, to avoid any conflict with farmers. As Karnataka makes great strides attracting investments, the demand for land will increase significantly. In the Global Investors Meet [GIM] held earlier this year under the leadership of Industries Minister MB Patil, the state secured commitments of approximately Rs 10.27 lakh crore, of which Rs 4.34 lakh crore have already been converted. The state is in the top position in the country in the defence and aviation industry, with 67% of all aircraft and helicopter manufacturing for defence services and 25% of India's aircraft and spacecraft industries based in Karnataka. The defence Public Sector Undertaking Hindustan Aeronautics Limited [HAL], being headquartered in Bengaluru, plays a pivotal role in providing a much-needed ecosystem and impetus for the growth in the sector. The presence of several DRDO facilities, multi-national firms, and many top-notch educational institutions also adds to the state's advantage.

CM Siddaramaiah meets Rajnath Singh, seeks two defence industrial corridors for Karnataka
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh requesting approval for two dedicated Defence Industrial Corridors in the state. Chief Minister Siddarmaiah in his letter has sought permission for corridors in the North and another in the South to accelerate domestic manufacturing and strengthen India's strategic self-reliance. The CM highlighted that Karnataka already accounts for 67% of India's aircraft and helicopter manufacturing for defence services and is home to 25% of the country's aircraft and spacecraft industry. 'The proposed corridors will further cement Karnataka's reputation as the Defence Capital of India,' he said in the letter. Siddaramaiah added that the recently held Global Investors Meet, Invest Karnataka 2025 saw investment commitments worth ₹10.27 lakh crore, of which ₹4.34 lakh crore have already been converted. Manufacturing alone accounted for ₹5.56 lakh crore in commitments, with 62% already converted. CM Siddaramiah urged the central government to extend support similar to that given to Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu in 2018, noting that these corridors would attract more domestic and global investment, create high-skilled jobs, and further the ' Make in India ' mission in the defence sector. He pointed out that the North Karnataka region, particularly Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, and Vijayapura, hosts key defence manufacturers such as Balu Forge, Aequs, Walchandnagar Industries, and others. 'This 250 acre aerospace Special Economic Zone (SEZ) fosters a vertically integrated aerospace ecosystem. The aerospаce SEZ has the largest machining capacity in the country that delivers more than 1 million machining hours annually, has 31 operational units and employs 5000 people,' the CM said. Similarly highlighting South Karnataka's ecosystem Siddaramaiah said the hi-tech defence and aerospace park in Devanahalli, and the presence of TASL, Collins Aerospace, Dynamatic Technologies and others make it a natural hub for defence and aerospace innovation.

Defence corridors will be sought for Karnataka: M.B. Patil
The State government will seek sanctioning of two defence corridor projects for Karnataka during the meeting of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday. The two defence corridors being mooted are the Kolar-Chickballapur region and the Hubballi-Belagavi region. 'As the country's leading contributor to the aerospace and defence sector, Karnataka deserves two defence corridors — one each in north and south Karnataka,' Industries Minister M.B. Patil told presspersons here on Tuesday. He said that Karnataka should have been granted a defence corridor on merit when Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh were allotted the corridor projects. 'Even the Central government has realised the oversight and Mr. Singh himself has acknowledged this. It also came up for discussion when the Defence Minister participated in the Global Investors Meet in Karnataka earlier this year,' said, clarifying that Karnataka was not against projects being sanctioned to other States. 'We are demanding what Karnataka rightfully deserves.'
