SNL Is Stuck in a Creative Rut in Its 50th Season — Can It Be Fixed?
SNL went all out to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a live three-hour special in February that featured lots of fun cameos and sketches — but the season surrounding that special has been a letdown by comparison. It's almost as if the 50th anniversary has overshadowed the show itself, with the current cast getting pushed aside each week for buzzy cameos from former cast members. And it's not just the cameos: With uninspired writing and a lack of breakout stars, Season 50 has been making more headlines for viral moments like musical guest Morgan Wallen's abrupt exit than for funny sketches.

There's still plenty of talent in the main cast, with Chloe Fineman and Heidi Gardner in particular shining on a regular basis. I like Sarah Sherman's unique brand of weirdness, and Michael Longfellow has a dry wit that isn't utilized enough. But it does feel like SNL is missing a heavy hitter right now, a true breakout star. Bowen Yang and Marcello Hernandez seem to be getting the most screen time this season, but the results have been decidedly mixed. (Hernandez's seductive Domingo is one of the few recurring characters SNL is still attempting.) I usually enjoy Please Don't Destroy's video contributions, too, but they feel sealed off from the rest of the show. SNL's current cast just feels like a grab bag of different comedic styles that aren't meshing together well.
Then there's the Donald Trump problem. SNL trots out James Austin Johnson as Trump nearly every week without fail, but the political sketches feel obligatory at this point, and like preaching to the choir. Johnson's impression is spot-on, to be fair, but the writing just rehashes the same notes over and over. No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, it's boring to watch SNL beat a dead horse each week, and it eats up valuable real estate that could be dedicated to actually innovative sketch comedy.
Now of course, people have been declaring SNL dead almost as long as it's been on the air, and it always manages to find a way to bounce back, so I'm not counting it out entirely. But I can also clearly see that it's flailing right now, and Lorne Michaels isn't getting any younger. Could a fresh voice like Tina Fey (please?) come in and take the reins and guide SNL into a new golden era? I could see it… and I'm rooting for it. SNL's 50th anniversary special reminded us how essential this show has been to American comedy over the past half-century. But it also highlighted how far off the path the show is right now.

The network announced Monday that reality singing competition series The Voice will return for Season 28 on Sept. 22. Reba McEntire will return to coach competitors for the fourth time, after a break in Season 27. Niall Horan, who coached Seasons 23 and 24, and Snoop Dogg, who debuted as a coach in Season 26, are also returning. Michael Buble will also return. The drama series Brilliant Minds, starring Zachary Quinto, will premiere its second season immediately after The Voice. The Law & Order revival starring Reid Scott, Mehcad Brooks and Maura Tierney returns Sept. 25, while Saturday Night Live will premiere its 51st season Oct. 4. Stephen Colbert inquires about a new gig after 'Late Show' cancellation
Is Stephen Colbert eyeing a pivot to podcasting? The comedian, 61, playfully teased his possible next steps on the July 28 episode of "The Late Show" in the wake of CBS' announcement that his late-night program is coming to an end. Colbert spoke with Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, the hosts of "Las Culturistas," a popular podcast. During their chat, he picked their brains about podcasting, suggesting that he could move into the field after "The Late Show" ends. "I'm going to need a gig soon, so sell me on podcasting," Colbert said to Yang and Rogers. "Is it fun?" The comic also asked his guests if podcasting is "hard" or if it's "just like this, but with no pictures?" Rogers joked in response that "Las Culturistas," a comedy podcast with a focus on pop culture, has been successful because he and Yang started it under the assumption that no one would listen. He added that the "secret sauce" is that a podcast must be "real." Colbert's cancellation: A ratings crisis or a political bribe? We investigate Yang, meanwhile, offered a pitch for what Colbert should make a podcast about. "I think you and your wife, Evie, should just go on dates, and either turn the microphones on during the date, or just recap us," the "Saturday Night Live" star said. "That sounds really sweet to me." "I don't know how you guys feel about that," Yang added, and Colbert's studio audience cheered to indicate they liked the idea. "Done," Colbert replied before getting Yang and Rogers to agree to produce the podcast. "I would love to produce it," Yang said. While the three were joking around, Yang wasn't the first person to suggest that Colbert could move to podcasting after CBS announced the surprise cancellation of "The Late Show." On the "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend" podcast, which he launched in 2018, the comedian has interviewed guests, including Paul McCartney and former President Joe Biden. Colbert is also no stranger to podcasting. In 2023, while their late-night shows were off the air due to a writers' strike, Colbert teamed up with Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel and John Oliver to host the "Strike Force Five" podcast, which they kept on the air until the strike ended. "The Late Show" also has an official podcast, "The Late Show Pod Show." Colbert still has time to settle on what he might do next, as "The Late Show" will remain on the air until May.

What we know about Beyond Paradise series 4 as filming begins
The beloved BBC crime drama is officially returning for a fourth series, with new details emerging about the team at Shipton Abbott. Beyond Paradise's Detective Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) is returning for another round of tantalising mysteries on the south coast in Shipton Abbott. That's right, the beloved BBC crime drama will be back for a fourth series and the great news was confirmed by Red Planet Pictures on Tuesday, 29 July. Not only that, but it was announced that production has already begun on the new episodes. For those who can't wait to learn more about the new series, here is what we know so far. When will Beyond Paradise series 4 be released? Red Planet Productions confirmed that production had begun on Beyond Paradise's first episode on 21 July with a picture of the very first slate of the series. The image showed a coastal view behind the slate and revealed that the episode itself will be directed by Fiona Walton. The Instagram social media post read: "We're back in Shipton Abbott! Filming has begun this week on the brand-new series of #BeyondParadise. Expect plenty of puzzling twists and turns as the team gear up for another series full of mystery, humour, and heart on the sunny shores of Devon and Cornwall." The BBC hasn't yet confirmed when series 4 will return to screens, but it is likely to continue the tradition of airing in the first half of 2026. The broadcaster will likely confirm the release date closer to the time of its release. What will Beyond Paradise series 4 be about? Series 3 ended with a dramatic twist in Humphrey and fiancée Martha (Sally Bretton) having to say goodbye to their foster child Rosie. The young girl had just started to become comfortable with her new foster parents, and they had grown close to her too, but in the finale, the time came for her to return to her birth parents. Humphrey and Martha's journey as foster parents is an important part of the series and it will likely continue to be a significant narrative in the next series. Elsewhere, the show has been exploring the personal relationships of several supporting characters, such as Esther (Zahra Ahmadi) and her budding romance with Archie (Jamie Bamber). The pair decided to part ways at the end of series 3, but the aftermath of this could play an important part in series 4. And then, of course, there will be a number of important cases for the team in Shipton Abbott to solve. Who stars in Beyond Paradise series 4? Marshall and Bretton are expected to return for the BBC show's fourth series, while other key players like Ahmadi, Dylan Lleweylln, Felicity Montagu, and Barbara Flynn are also expected to reprise their respective roles in the series. The BBC has not yet confirmed who will be part of the cast, but this is likely to be announced soon.
