During his nine years living in the US state of Tennessee, Fahd, a Saudi national, found comfort and consistency at Dunkin' Donuts, where he placed the same order every day.

Now back in Riyadh, Fahd is doing something similar, highlighting the Saudi Arabian love affair with all things American that many find surprising.
'When I came here, thank God, the same cafe and same order were here too,' says the 31-year-old mechanical engineer, who does not want to give his family name.
'I started living the same lifestyle here as I did in America.'

The recent war between Iran and Israel has laid bare a truth long obscured by Kremlin bluster: Russia is no longer a superpower. Moscow's muted response to Tehran's plight is not an anomaly but the latest – and perhaps most telling – chapter in a pattern of strategic neglect that stretches from the Middle East to the Levant and South Caucasus. Advertisement Driven by President Vladimir Putin's neo-imperialist fantasies, Russia plunged into Ukraine to find itself in a quagmire that has bled its military, hollowed its treasury and crippled its credibility as a reliable partner. For years, Russia and Iran forged an unholy alliance, a marriage of convenience cemented by a shared animus towards the West and an appetite for defying the American-led order. The bond deepened with Iran's supplying of Shahed-136 drones and ballistic missiles – tools of terror that rained destruction on Ukrainian cities, enabling Putin's savage campaign to grind on. In January, both sides solemnised their pact with a 20-year strategic partnership agreement , trumpeting a united front against Western hegemony. Trade between the two countries, both heavily sanctioned by the West, grew by 16 per cent to US$4.8 billion last year. Energy agreements have bound their fates even more tightly. Africa could emerge a winner from China's war-induced energy shift
A ceasefire has brought a reprieve to the war between Israel and Iran , halting the single most dangerous regional conflict in recent years. For Beijing, the world's largest oil importer, the lesson from the brief, 12-day conflict, could not be clearer: China cannot continue to rely on a region so prone to disruption for the resources needed to power its economic development. China has been successful at maintaining a balancing act between competing geopolitical forces, importing vast amounts of discounted crude from Iran while securing long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) deals with Gulf suppliers . It has also cultivated diplomatic neutrality and maintained a strong relationship with Israel. This neutrality has allowed Beijing to support energy needs without hindering geopolitical ambitions. The fragility of this strategy has been seen in the most recent round of conflict, which jeopardised shipping routes , disrupted supply chains and led to a global spike in energy costs. Lessons learned will not be limited to the Middle East. These will resonate across Beijing's global foreign policy apparatus. Beijing's reliance on Iranian oil was at its peak in 2024, when it bought around 1.5 million barrels per day, which accounted for about 90 per cent of Iranian oil shipments and 15 per cent of Chinese crude consumption. Chinese consumption of Iranian oil has since dropped to 740,000 barrels per day. Whether the ceasefire holds is immaterial at this point. Diversification is a strategic imperative. Beijing will continue to look towards LNG, the country's most viable hedge in the immediate term. Even this, however, comes from the yet-to-be-stabilised Middle East. Just before the recent war erupted, ENN LNG Singapore – a subsidiary of China's ENN Natural Gas – signed a long-term agreement with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. As the war has shown, while such arrangements are stabilising, they are far from immune to sudden disruption. The primary solution that might offer long-term energy security for Beijing is renewables. In 2024, non-fossil fuels made up 56 per cent of total installed electricity generation capacity. By the end of 2024, China's cumulative renewable energy capacity reached nearly 1.9 billion kilowatts, a 25 per cent year-on-year increase. China's electric vehicle (EV) market grew at the equally astounding rate of almost 40 per cent in 2024.

China to stay cautious as Iran seeks help amid clashes with US, Israel: Middle East expert
Iran may look to China for weapons support amid conflicts with the US and Israel , but Beijing will remain cautious, considering strained economic ties with Tehran and its broader interest in balancing ties with Israel and other Western-aligned states in the region, according to a veteran Chinese expert on the Middle East. Advertisement In an exclusive interview with the South China Morning Post, Pan Guang, a Chinese scholar of Jewish and Middle East studies, said the conflict between Iran and Israel was unlikely to spiral into a broader war, but tit-for-tat retaliation could continue as Tehran pushes ahead with its nuclear programme, which is believed to persist despite US strikes. Tensions escalated after Israel launched strikes on Iran on June 13. The US joined days later, targeting three of Iran's nuclear facilities – marking the most significant Western military action against the Islamic Republic since 1979. Iran retaliated by attacking a US military base in Qatar and striking Israel's strategic port city of Haifa, home to Chinese projects under the Belt and Road Initiative US President Donald Trump brokered a ceasefire between Iran and Israel this week, which has largely held despite initial violations. However, prospects for a durable truce appear dim, as Iran's core nuclear capabilities are believed to remain intact and Israel remains determined to neutralise what it sees as an existential threat. Beijing, a close partner of Tehran, is being closely watched as the conflict unfolds. On Thursday, Iranian Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh joined nine of his counterparts at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's defence ministers' meeting in Qingdao, China, where he called for a bigger Chinese role in easing the conflict. Pan said Iran might seek Chinese weapons in light of its escalating tensions with Israel, drawing lessons from Pakistan's recent conflict with India.
