Birmingham Stallions coach Skip Holtz thrilled to be reunited with QB Alex McGough

Fox Sports27-03-2025
Skip Holtz doesn't simply stand out because he has coached the Birmingham Stallions to three consecutive league championships — two in the former USFL and one in the current UFL — but that he has produced two MVPs at quarterback over that same span.

Heading into the 2025 UFL season, Holtz is reunited with the first quarterback he accomplished both feats with, former FIU star Alex McGough. Holtz first laid eyes on McGough during his time coaching at Louisiana Tech.
In one start against Holtz's Bulldogs, McGough completed 29 of 44 passes for 263 passing yards and two touchdowns. In another, he completed 25 of 44 passes for 281 passing yards with three scores and one interception. Those performances made such an impression on Holtz that he selected McGough with the first overall pick in the inaugural 2022 USFL Draft.
An injury sidelined McGough earlier that year, but he became one of a handful of players who personify what the UFL has come to mean in the United States — a place where players can continue to play at a high level, often times in hopes of finding a way back to the NFL. McGough got a shot with the Green Bay Packers after leading the Stallions to their second USFL Championship in 2023, passing for 2,105 yards and 23 touchdowns that season.
After two years in Green Bay, McGough is back to lead the Stallions, and Holtz could not be more excited to have the 29-year-old leading his team this season.
"In Year 1, everybody was a rookie," Holtz said. "In Year 2, we had some second-year players and some rookies. Well, now you have some third- and fourth-year players that are in your system, and I think that's where you really see the growth of football players when they have 100 percent understanding.
"With Alex being in Year 3, I'm not just coaching the big picture anymore — I'm coaching the details."

The Stallions' offensive scheme is clear to McGough, and he has taken on more responsibility to teach its nuances to players who are returning and brand new.
"I'll give little tidbits of advice even before I call the play [and] after I call the play, to certain people, just so we are on the same page," McGough said. "You're always gonna have a new guy here and there and maybe help those guys along the way. I think it helps you know that most of these receivers that I've been with are either in Year 1 or 2."
McGough won't lack weapons in the passing game. With players like former Clemson star Amari Rodgers, Texas A&M consensus All-American Jace Sternberger and 2023 USFL Championship Game MVP Deon Cain, his job will be once again to get the ball to playmakers in space. McGough is also mobile enough to extend plays and provide a kickstart to Holtz's rushing attack.
In Year 4, the Stallions are the runaway favorite to win the UFL title (+190) and many expect them to only get stronger as new players become acclimated to playing in a league with less than a month of training camp and no bye weeks. There's not just a standard for winning that the Stallions aim to maintain — Birmingham is 32-4 under Holtz — but one for developing.
Holtz's last director of player personnel and general manager, Zach Potter, is now the GM at Sacramento State. After a year as co-offensive coordinator for Birmingham, Philip Montgomery is now offensive coordinator at Virginia Tech. Defensive line coach Bill Johnson, who won a college football national championship at LSU and a Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints, won the inaugural UFL title alongside Holtz before joining the Chicago Bears this year.

What's more, former Stallions kicker Brandon Aubrey was named an All-Pro and earned Pro Bowl honors in his first two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.
Perhaps another coach might feel pressure to continue this run of success and win a fourth consecutive championship in a burgeoning dynasty, but that is not what drives Holtz.
"Don't get me wrong, we're here to win," Holtz said. "But we're here to win the next game — and we want to win it — [by] getting better in the process. I don't feel a huge amount of pressure. … Do I want to win four? Heck yeah. Are we trying to? Heck yeah. We're trying to win every game we play, but I don't sit up in front of this team and say our [only] goal is to win a championship."

You can now own MLB legend Willie Mays' signed and worn underwear as bizarre memorabilia hits auction

There's weird memorabilia, and then there's this. Willie Mays' personally worn and signed boxer shorts are currently up for sale in the Lelands Summer Classic Auction, for those who want to do a lot of explaining about what's on display in their home. The signed white Hanes underwear auction will go through Aug. 16, but the leading bid as of early Saturday afternoon is $125 for the legendary undergarments. Advertisement 3 Willie May's signed and worn boxer shorts. 'Mays used to wear a baseball cap a size too small so that the cap would dramatically fly off when he was chasing a fly ball or careening around the bases. There is no evidence that he likewise worn his underwear a size too small,' the lot description says. 'The offered underwear has a 'Hanes' manufacturer's tag on the back of the elastic band at the waist. This tag has machine printing showing a size S [small], for a 30/32 waist, very trim for such a power hitter. The tag also indicates that the underwear is '100% cotton.' The underwear has a pouch fly. Advertisement 'Each leg of the underwear measures 12′ from the top of the waist elastic to the bottom of the leg. On the front of the elastic is '24 Mays 24,' and on the back of the elastic is 24,' all written in black marker by an unknown hand. On the inside back waist elastic, Mays has signed 'Willie Mays,' in blue marker. The signature darkness is somewhat uneven, as some parts of the signature are clearly apparent, but lighter in tone than other parts. The underwear seems to show use, yet it remains in very good condition.' 3 Willie Mays in 2013. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post Mays, who died last summer, is widely considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time, having been elected to the Hall of Fame after winning two MVPs during his time with the Giants — both the New York and San Francisco versions — before ending his career with the Mets in 1973. So this could be an unconventional way to get an autograph if a ball or jersey feels expensive. AP 'Remember, this is not just underwear; it's Willie Mays' underwear,' the description goes on. 'If you are searching for an unusual addition to your sports collection, one that your friends will almost assuredly not possess, one that will create interest and spark some humorous repartee, this is it!'

NFL analyst says Rams should retire this Super Bowl winner's jersey

The Los Angeles Rams have only retired eight jersey numbers in their franchise history, but CBS Sports' Bryan DeArdo writes that the team should add another to this list: Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner's No. 13. It's surprising that Warner's number hasn't already been retired given the fact that the Rams have eight retired numbers, although Warner's accomplishments came when the franchise played in St. Louis. Warner is a two-time league and one-time Super Bowl MVP, so he's more than deserving of the honor. Warner had an illustrious career in his six seasons with the then-St. Louis Rams, where he went 35-15. He led the league in passing yards once and passing touchdowns twice as the kingpin of "The Greatest Show on Turf." Aside from his MVPs and Super Bowl ring, Warner led the NFL in completion percentage three times, passing touchdowns twice and passing yards once. He also made three Pro-Bowls and two first-team All-Pro teams. Warner is seventh in franchise history in passing yards, sixth in passing touchdowns, sixth in wins and first in passing yards per game. The other names on the The issue with Warner is that he didn't finish his career with the Rams. While he played there for half of his career, he went on to have solid production for another six seasons elsewhere, including a Super Bowl appearance for the Arizona Cardinals in 2008. It's unclear what the prerequisite for jersey retirement is for the Rams, but Warner certainly has the personal and team accolades to be considered.

HBCU Product Gets Second NFL Shot with Hometown Squad

After grinding through practice squads, tryouts, and a full season in the UFL, former HBCU standout Ricky Lee is back in the NFL. The Jacksonville Jaguars announced that they've signed the offensive lineman, bringing the Jacksonville native home to Duval County. Lee, who split his collegiate career between North Carolina Central and North Carolina A&T, has traveled a long, winding road to get here. The former first-team all-district selection from Riverside High School started 45 consecutive games in college. Anchoring the right side of the line for the Eagles before shifting to left tackle for the Aggies. His performance at A&T earned him second-team All-Big South honors in 2022 and put him on NFL scouts' radars. Lee entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Carolina Panthers in 2023. He appeared in six games as a rookie, primarily on special teams. But his NFL dream quickly turned into a journey of uncertainty. After being waived, Lee bounced between practice squads with the Minnesota Vikings, Cleveland Browns, and New York Giants in 2024, fighting for another shot on a 53-man roster. This spring, he turned to the UFL for reps and visibility. Joining the Arlington Renegades as a key pickup by GM Rick Mueller. Starting all 10 games at left tackle, Lee allowed just two sacks despite the Renegades' struggles to find offensive line consistency. Penalties were an issue-he committed 10 across the season-but his size, athleticism, and durability stood out enough to draw interest from multiple NFL teams. Over the last month, Lee worked out for the Saints, Jets, Chiefs, Colts, and Falcons before the Jaguars made the call. This makes him the fifth Renegades player to sign an NFL deal this offseason. Lee's return to the NFL is another win for the HBCU football pipeline, which continues to produce pro-level talent despite limited athletic resources. This latest opportunity may not have come without his years of HBCU development and the platform the UFL provided. Speaking to the Charlotte Post during his first NFL signing in 2023, Lee summed up what this moment means for players like him: "A lot of guys don't get this opportunity. My dream finally came true. I'm blessed to be here. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Being part of the top one percent is a blessing. I can't really describe… I'm speechless." Now, Ricky Lee will get to prove himself again. This time, looking to lock down a roster spot with his hometown team, the Jacksonville Jaguars. The post HBCU Product Gets Second NFL Shot with Hometown Squad appeared first on HBCU Gameday.
