Residents blame liquor shop locations for traffic chaos

Time of India28-05-2025
Bhopal: 'Tipplers find a way to the booze shop, wherever it may be located,' goes a popular saying. However, in Bhopal, it would seem that liquor vendors ensure that their outlet is located in a place where it's visible to all.
This doesn't sit well with a lot of residents and commuters.
As a result, liquor shops from Ratibad to Trilanga, Shahpura to Arera Colony, Shivaji Nagar to MP Nagar, and Jahangirabad are located just by the roadside in busy market areas. As the crowd in the shop swells by evening, there is virtual chaos outside the shops with people and their vehicles all around. Traffic jams at the site are a common sight, and shoppers, particularly women and children, avoid the route to save themselves from inconvenience.
The norms of not having a liquor shop in a residential colony, near a school, college, or religious place are also ignored in pursuit of having the booze shop in the glare of all.
District collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh, when asked whether there are no guidelines as to where liquor shops should be located, said, "Yes, there are guidelines, and if there are shops located in violation of the norms, you send me information about them, I will get it cross-checked," he said on the matter.
Atulya Jain, a resident of Gulmohar Colony, referring to his experience in Trilanga, said, "There was a road jam, a queue of vehicles honking from the liquor shop to the square on the other side of a mall. As the jam persisted, I thought let's find out what has happened. I saw a truck laden with liquor bottles trying to get closer to the liquor shop for unloading, and there were vehicles all around outside the shop. Such sights are not rare, though," he added.
Sandhya Shandilya, who lives in Shivaji Nagar, said, "In years, I don't remember going towards the liquor shop at 5 No. Stop after the evening. Buying liquor and going off is one thing, but you have people drinking in the open or in their vehicles. People using abusive language for each other and fighting is also common. To be fair to them, I never heard that they misbehaved with anyone visiting the market, but the atmosphere becomes such in the evening that I avoid going to the market myself and don't allow my children to go there either.
"
Aruna Deshpande, a resident of Manisha market, said, "Several women from my colony would rather avoid going that side because of the chaos that prevails outside the liquor shops from the evening to late in the night," she said.
Ramesh Sharma, who lives in Shahpura, pointed out that for two years, including the Corona period, the liquor shop was in a street by the side of Manisha Market, and people didn't have any issues of traffic jams or chaos on the main road. "But every liquor contractor wants his shop to be located on the main road or middle of a market, and since they can pay the hefty rent, they usually get one. Besides, district administration, excise department, and BMC all help them to get a shop at the place of their choice," he said.

BMC files FIR against Hiranandani builders for unauthorised excavation in hilly area of Powai

Mumbai's Powai police station on Thursday registered an FIR against Hiranandani Builders & Developers for allegedly carrying out unauthorised excavation in the hilly area in Powai. The police registered a case on the complaint of Sanjay Dudhbhate, an official with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in L-Ward. The BMC received a complaint on July 3, 2023 regarding unauthorized excavation in the hilly area near a helipad in Powai from an individual. After this an inspection team was sent to the site, where a security officer for Hiranandani builders was present. 'The BMC officials on visiting the site found that soil excavation had been carried out without authorisation for a 300-metre-long, 4 to 5 metres wide, and 1 to 2 metres deep area in the hilly area near Hiranandani Helipad in Powai,' the complainant alleged in the FIR. The inspection party submitted their report the next day. Based on this report, BMC officials issued an order under Section 354 A of the Municipal Corporation Act to stop the work at the said site. BMC also issued a notice on July 7 to the Hiranandani Builders & Developers regarding the unauthorised excavation and a copy was also pasted at the site. However, despite the notice, the builder continued with the unauthorised excavation work the next day. Hence, the BMC officer approached the police and filed a complaint on Thursday. The Hiranandani Builders and its owner have been booked under sections 52 (Penalty for unauthorised development or for use otherwise than in conformity with development plan) and 43 (Restrictions on development of land) of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966 and further investigation has been initiated, said a police officer. Commenting on the development, a company spokesperson from Hiranandani Builders, stated, 'There is no unauthorised construction or excavation of any kind on the said plot. What began as a barren quarry with merely seven trees has been transformed by us into a thriving green sanctuary, home to lakhs of trees and rich biodiversity. To suggest any intent to harm the very environment we have painstakingly restored is not only inaccurate but fundamentally contrary to our core values and long-standing commitment.'

Man gets 20 years in jail for raping stepdaughter over extended period

Bhopal: A special POCSO court here has sentenced a person to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping his stepdaughter over a period of time. This occurred before the survivor's maternal grandmother caught him in the act, leading to a report being lodged with police. The court also ordered the payment of Rs 4 lakh to the survivor to help her mother bring up the girl properly. On May 6, 2020, the survivor and her mother lodged an FIR against the accused at Koh-e-Fiza police station. They stated that the survivor, a class IV student, lived with her mother after her father left them. Her mother later married the convict, hoping it would help her and her daughter achieve a better living. Her mother worked as a domestic help at several places, and during the Corona pandemic, the survivor lived alone with her stepfather in the house. During this period, the accused raped the minor girl on several occasions. He used to threaten to kill her mother if she disclosed what she was going through. On May 6, 2020, he was trying to do it again when her maternal grandmother arrived and saw him. She later informed the survivor's mother about the whole incident, and an FIR was lodged with police. A case was registered under relevant sections of the IPC and POCSO Act. The special POCSO court of judge Kumudini Patel on Thursday held the accused guilty in light of the evidence produced in court and sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.
