Take action on encroachments at Upper Lake in 3 months: NGT

Bhopal: In an important environmental directive, the Central Zone Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered that identified encroachments in the Bhadbhada region of Bhopal's Upper Lake be addressed within the next three months. According to a press release on Wednesday, during a recent hearing of case, Bhopal municipal corporation informed the NGT that under the AMRUT 1.0 scheme, work has already been undertaken around the lake including laying sewer lines, establishing sewage treatment plants, and providing household connections in the region. Under AMRUT 2.0, further efforts are underway to treat the lake's untreated water. BMC also reported that previously cleared land in the Bhadbhada area has now been secured with fencing and enriched through tree plantation. District collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh and BMC commissioner Harendra Narayan joined the hearing via video conference, while legal representatives of both petitioner and respondent appeared in person. The NGT emphasised its concern over ecological protection and instructed authorities to ensure timely action on remaining encroachments for the long-term health of the Upper Lake ecosystem.

Centre picks Bhopal for beggar-free project under SMILE scheme

Bhopal: An order of district collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh, ahead of Global Investors' Summit (GIS-2025) taking place in the state capital, to enforce 'begging ban' may not have freed Bhopal from the scourge of begging but there is still hope. Bhopal has now been selected by the union ministry of social justice and empowerment under its Support for Marginalised Individuals for Lideligood & Enterprise (SMILE) project to make the city beggar-free. Singh had banned begging under section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Samhita (BNSS) on February 3, 2025. Under the ban, both begging and giving alms to beggars had been banned and declared a crime. Children selling goods on traffic signals and other places had also been banned. A committee headed by joint director, social justice department, RK Singh was also formed to monitor the impact of the ban and initially, there appeared to be some impact with at least begging on roads and busy traffic junctions coming under control but beggars could still be seen particularly outside religious places and markets. A night shelter room in Kolar was converted into 'Bhikshu grah (a place for stay of beggars, where they were provided food and shelter)' but overall, the experiment didn't have the desired impact. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Now, the ministry of social justice and empowerment has stepped in selecting Bhopal district under its project SMILE to make it begging-free. Major revamp set in motion: Slums in city's centre to shift

Bhopal: Bhopal's central area is undergoing significant urban development changes, with plans to relocate slum settlements near Vallabh Bhawan to the Banganga area and other areas within 3 to 5 km in the vicinity, according to officials. Information suggests that nine slum settlements situated near Vallabh Bhawan will be shifted to Banganga, near Jinsi and other locations where estimated 14,000 permanent residences will be built through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement. The communities affected include Vallabh Nagar, Vallabh Nagar-2, Om Nagar, Bhim Nagar, Durga Nagar-1 and 2, Ashok Samrat Nagar, Kumharpura, and Jhada Colony. Initially intended for on-site redevelopment, these plans were cancelled due to their location near the high-security Vallabh Bhawan zone. The administration has identified govt land in Banganga for the new development in the project. Senior officials, including divisional commissioner Sanjeev Singh, collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh, and Bhopal municipal corporation commissioner Harendra Narayan, have reviewed the proposal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade gold CFDs with a trusted broker | Open an account today. This relocation will release approximately 125 acres of land in central Bhopal. For the whole of the state capital, earlier in November, BMC began conducting computerised socio-economic surveys, including MIS entry of households in the identified slums. The initiative, part of JhuggiMukt Bhopal Yojana, encompasses 388 slums and over 1.5 lakh households, focusing on slum rehabilitation in the city with private participation. Following the identification phase, the slum land will be monetised. Many slums occupy valuable locations. Private developers will construct new housing for current residents while developing commercial spaces to ensure project sustainability.

Residents blame liquor shop locations for traffic chaos

Bhopal: 'Tipplers find a way to the booze shop, wherever it may be located,' goes a popular saying. However, in Bhopal, it would seem that liquor vendors ensure that their outlet is located in a place where it's visible to all. This doesn't sit well with a lot of residents and commuters. As a result, liquor shops from Ratibad to Trilanga, Shahpura to Arera Colony, Shivaji Nagar to MP Nagar, and Jahangirabad are located just by the roadside in busy market areas. As the crowd in the shop swells by evening, there is virtual chaos outside the shops with people and their vehicles all around. Traffic jams at the site are a common sight, and shoppers, particularly women and children, avoid the route to save themselves from inconvenience. The norms of not having a liquor shop in a residential colony, near a school, college, or religious place are also ignored in pursuit of having the booze shop in the glare of all. District collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh, when asked whether there are no guidelines as to where liquor shops should be located, said, "Yes, there are guidelines, and if there are shops located in violation of the norms, you send me information about them, I will get it cross-checked," he said on the matter. Atulya Jain, a resident of Gulmohar Colony, referring to his experience in Trilanga, said, "There was a road jam, a queue of vehicles honking from the liquor shop to the square on the other side of a mall. As the jam persisted, I thought let's find out what has happened. I saw a truck laden with liquor bottles trying to get closer to the liquor shop for unloading, and there were vehicles all around outside the shop. Such sights are not rare, though," he added. Sandhya Shandilya, who lives in Shivaji Nagar, said, "In years, I don't remember going towards the liquor shop at 5 No. Stop after the evening. Buying liquor and going off is one thing, but you have people drinking in the open or in their vehicles. People using abusive language for each other and fighting is also common. To be fair to them, I never heard that they misbehaved with anyone visiting the market, but the atmosphere becomes such in the evening that I avoid going to the market myself and don't allow my children to go there either. " Aruna Deshpande, a resident of Manisha market, said, "Several women from my colony would rather avoid going that side because of the chaos that prevails outside the liquor shops from the evening to late in the night," she said. Ramesh Sharma, who lives in Shahpura, pointed out that for two years, including the Corona period, the liquor shop was in a street by the side of Manisha Market, and people didn't have any issues of traffic jams or chaos on the main road. "But every liquor contractor wants his shop to be located on the main road or middle of a market, and since they can pay the hefty rent, they usually get one. Besides, district administration, excise department, and BMC all help them to get a shop at the place of their choice," he said.
