Italian luxury group Zegna posts 2.6% drop in organic revenues in second quarter

MILAN, July 30 (Reuters) - Italian luxury group Ermenegildo Zegna (JN0.F), opens new tab reported a 2.6% drop in second-quarter organic revenues on Wednesday as sales in its wholesale channel sank, especially for the smaller Thom Browne brand, and with weakness in the Chinese market. Organic revenue totalled 469 million euros ($541 million) for the April-June quarter, broadly in line with an analyst consensus provided by Visible Alpha. Sales in the period were dragged down by a 17% drop in the Greater China region. The stronger euro also impacted the revenues. The decline in the wholesale performance in part reflects a decision to shift the focus away from this part of the business. "Our strategic initiatives and actions taken are yielding results, even though the sector navigates a continuously challenging environment", Chairman and CEO Gildo Zegna said in a statement. The group also announced that Sam Lobban, who had been working at department store group Nordstrom, will be Thom Browne's new CEO as Rodrigo Bazan stepped down after nine years to "pursue other opportunities". Singapore's state investment firm Temasek agreed on Tuesday to increase its stake in Ermenegildo Zegna Group to 10%. Zegna said that the $126 million proceeds would strengthen its financial position and enable it to seize any opportunities that arise. ($1 = 0.8665 euros)

Aston Martin cuts earnings outlook amid US tariff hit

The group saw shares fall over 3% in morning trading on Wednesday after saying it now expects full-year underlying earnings to 'improve towards breakeven', having previously guided for profit growth. Aston's stock has lost half its value in the past year over concerns about the impact of US President Donald Trump's tariff war. The profit alert comes after Aston Martin revealed the impact of a difficult first half, with operating losses widening to £134.7 million for the six months to June 30 from £106.1 million a year earlier. Revenues tumbled 34% to £220.5 million in the second quarter and were down 25% overall in the first half. The group limited shipments to the US in the second quarter after Mr Trump imposed a 25% tariff on car imports in April. It then resumed shipments in June as the UK reached an agreement with the US for a lower 10% tariff on UK-made cars for the first 100,000 vehicles per manufacturer. Anything above that threshold will be hit with a 27.5% duty. Adrian Hallmark, chief executive of Aston Martin, said: 'The evolving and disruptive US tariff situation was unhelpful to our operations in the second quarter.' He added: 'We continue to actively engage the UK Government to urge them to improve the quota mechanism to ensure fair access for the whole UK car industry to the 10% rate on an ongoing basis.' The tariff disruption saw the firm's wholesale sales by volume fall 8% in the second quarter to 972. The results come amid a significant overhaul at Aston Martin as it seeks to shore up its long-term finances. In February, the group said it plans to sell its minority stake in the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One team and confirmed that Lawrence Stroll's Yew Tree Consortium would invest a further £52.5 million to grow its stake in the business. Aston Martin said the deal to sell a stake in the Formula One racing team was nearing completion and would be worth around £110 million.

Thailand and Cambodia reaffirm ceasefire after China-brokered meeting

The ceasefire reached in Malaysia was supposed to take effect at midnight on Monday, but was quickly tested. Thailand's army accused Cambodia of launching attacks in multiple areas early on Tuesday, but Cambodia said there was no firing in any location. The Thai army then reported exchanges of gunfire into Wednesday morning, but said there was no use of heavy artillery. Thailand's foreign ministry said on Wednesday morning: 'Such act of aggression constitutes once again a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement by Cambodian forces and their apparent lack of good faith.' By Wednesday afternoon, however, both sides appeared to have reaffirmed their commitment to a ceasefire, with representatives appearing smiling in a photo with a Chinese vice minister Sun Weidong at a meeting in Shanghai. In attendance from Cambodia was foreign secretary Kung Phaok, and in attendance from Thailand was Jullapong Nonsrichai, executive adviser to the minister of foreign affairs of Thailand. 'Cambodia and Thailand reiterated to China their commitment to the ceasefire consensus and expressed appreciation for China's positive role in de-escalating the situation,' a statement from China's foreign ministry said. China said the informal meeting was its 'latest diplomatic effort' and it was playing a 'constructive role in resolving their border dispute', according to the same statement.
