Feeling confident and in control when they're active boosts children's wellbeing

The wellbeing of children is under the spotlight in the UK, after a 2025 report from Unicef ranked the UK at 21 out of 36 wealthy countries on child wellbeing. With growing concerns about mental health, rising screen time, and fewer chances to play – as well as the well-known links between physical activity and better mood – one solution seems obvious. Get kids moving more.
But our new research suggests that it's not just about more activity. It's about better experiences. Feeling safe, capable and free to choose matters is more important for children than just the number of minutes they spend running around.
Our findings from a national study of over 16,000 children aged seven to 11 across Wales found that while physical activity is clearly important, its benefits for mental health were more connected to how children felt while moving than to how much they moved.

We found that children who thought that they had control over how they were active, felt confident taking part in physical activity and believed they were good at it scored higher on wellbeing scales. These factors – autonomy, confidence and competence – were stronger predictors of wellbeing than more traditional measures like deprivation (normally we'd expect deprivation to positively or negatively affect wellbeing) or even total time spent being active.
We also found that children who felt safe where they lived, no matter how wealthy or deprived the area, were more likely to feel happy and well.
Yet too often, their chances to play and move are limited. Sometimes it's because adults worry about safety, and so don't permit children to roam or play in the potentially risky ways they might prefer. Other times, it's because the places around them just aren't built with children in mind.
Interestingly, we found that knowledge of why activity is good for you – often taught in schools or health campaigns – was associated with lower wellbeing. This suggests that top-down, adult-led messaging that focuses on why physical activity leads to physical fitness or maintaining a healthy weight might be missing the mark.
For some children, it could even feel like pressure. Messaging from schools and organisations may be harmful if they focus on outcomes rather than experience.
The feeling of control or choice was strongly associated with better mental health and fewer behavioural issues. These findings echo what young people have previously told us: they want more opportunities to play, to choose how they move, and to enjoy being active without pressure.
That's not to say movement doesn't matter. Children who moved more and sat less generally felt better about themselves. Less sedentary time was consistently associated with better wellbeing and lower emotional and behavioural difficulties.
But again, it wasn't just the behaviour — it was the feeling behind it that mattered. Our analysis showed that the most significant predictor of low emotional difficulties was feeling safe. For behavioural difficulties it is feelings of autonomy and competence that played a key role.
We also found that girls were more likely to report emotional difficulties (trouble controlling emotions or acting on feelings), while boys were more likely to experience behavioural ones (trouble controlling behaviour). This suggests a gendered difference in how wellbeing challenges show up.
This tells us that supporting wellbeing isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. The more we can listen to and work with children to shape activity around their needs, the more likely we are to reach those who might otherwise miss out.
For schools and youth organisations, this means rethinking how physical activity is promoted. Rather than more sports, more drills and more rules, children need inclusive, safe spaces where they feel confident to participate and free to choose.
A simple solution to this could include longer breaks between lessons and more free time to play, or varied activities that cater to different interests and skill levels.
It also means listening to what children say they need. In our previous research during the pandemic, children consistently asked for more time, safer spaces and permission to be active in ways that feel good to them.
If we want to support children's wellbeing, we must shift from performance to participation. It's not just about how fast they can run or how long they can play. It's about whether they feel safe, capable, and in control.

Aluminum in Vaccines Not Linked to Childhood Disorders

Early childhood vaccines containing aluminum are not linked to a higher risk for developing autoimmune, allergic, or neurodevelopmental disorders, according to a nationwide study of Danish children. The study, which looked at more than 1.2 million children over 24 years, provides additional evidence supporting the safety of aluminum-adsorbed vaccines, said senior author Anders Peter Hviid, MSc, DMSc, of Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen. 'Our results provide robust evidence to help parents make the right decisions about the health of their children and for clinicians and public health officials to communicate about the excellent safety of the childhood vaccines,' Hviid told Medscape Medical News . 'It's understandable that more and more parents are concerned about vaccine safety, given the mixed messages that they receive currently. We hope that our study can help settle the issue on this particular concern.' Aluminum adjuvants have been used in non-live vaccines to boost immune response for nearly a century. While years of research have demonstrated the safety of these adjuvants, concerns about potential risk remain. Robert F. Kennedy Jr, secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services, has blamed exposure to aluminum in vaccines for widespread allergies, and one of his close associates has petitioned regulators to halt distribution of certain vaccines until the makers of those shots provide more information about the amount of the metal in their products. Findings from animal studies have mostly driven concerns about aluminum in vaccines, Hviid and his colleagues wrote; however, a 2022 study looking at more than 326,000 US children did find a positive association between vaccine-associated aluminum and asthma. 'I think it's fair to say that in part our study was inspired by that report,' said Hviid, whose group published the findings July 14 in Annals of Internal Medicine . Linking Vaccination Records to Outcomes Researchers included 1.24 million children born in Denmark from 1997 to 2018. Eligibility required survival to age 2 years without congenital or preexisting conditions, including congenital rubella syndrome, respiratory disease, primary immune deficiency, or heart or liver failure. Researchers obtained vaccination information from Denmark's National Health Service Register and, for each child, calculated the total aluminum exposure by age 2. Since 1997, the Danish childhood vaccination program has offered an aluminum-containing vaccine against diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis, poliovirus, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Pentavac) in three doses at 3, 5, and 12 months. Since 2007, the program also offers an aluminum-adsorbed pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, also given in three doses in the first year of life. Researchers then tracked patient outcomes from age 2 to age 5 (or until Dec 31, 2020), looking for diagnoses of 50 chronic autoimmune, atopic or allergic, and neurodevelopmental disorders — including juvenile arthritis, asthma, and autism spectrum disorders. The median cumulative aluminum exposure for the cohort was 3 mg, with a range from 0 mg to 4.5 mg. Only 15,237 children received no aluminum-containing vaccines during the study period. Excluding Risk 'With Great Certainty' The analysis found no relationship between cumulative exposure to aluminum in vaccines and any of the 50 selected conditions. For any autoimmune disorder, the adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) per 1 mg of aluminum exposure was 0.98 (95% CI, 0.94-1.02). The aHR was 0.99 (95% CI, 0.98-1.01) for any atopic or allergic outcome and 0.93 (95% CI, 0.90-0.97) for any neurodevelopmental outcome. The most observed conditions during the study period were asthma (28,346 cases) and atopic dermatitis (22,978 cases). The researchers found no association between either condition and cumulative exposure to aluminum in vaccines. 'For some of the key outcomes that people are most interested in, like asthma and autism spectrum disorders, the results are quite clear, and we can exclude meaningful increases in risk with great certainty,' Hviid said. Some of these associations even demonstrated a slightly decreased risk — for example, autism spectrum disorders; however, with confidence intervals close to one, 'we don't interpret this as relevant protective effects,' he said. Secondary analyses that extended follow-up to 8 years of age, removed all children with no exposure to aluminum-containing vaccines, and restricted the analysis to complete cases also found no association between these chronic conditions and exposure to vaccines containing aluminum. 'With all these adjustments, they still didn't find any differential in the effect. I think all of that is very reassuring,' said James Campbell, MD, MS, a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. This paper 'adds to the long history of studies' on the safety of aluminum-containing vaccines, said Campbell, who also is vice chair of the committee on infectious diseases for the American Academy of Pediatrics. 'Aluminum salts have been around for almost 100 years as an adjuvant; we have such a long history of using them, both in the United States and across the world,' Campbell told Medscape . 'The aggregate of the data are that aluminum salt adjuvants are safe to be given to children.'

A mother who was diagnosed with postnatal depression after suffering intrusive thoughts about harming her newborn baby is calling for more support for women before and after birth. Karis, 30, from Basingstoke, Hampshire, gave birth to her son Noah two years ago and before she was diagnosed she said felt she "didn't want to be his mum". She now wants her experience to help destigmatise mental illness. She said women "don't get checked on enough" for mental health issues during the perinatal period, before and after birth. NHS England said the use of perinatal mental health services was increasing. Having gone through a traumatic birth experience, Karis recalled how she struggled to connect with Noah and that she hid her feelings for fear he would be taken away from her. "I just didn't feel like I loved him, I didn't want to be his mum, I didn't want him," she said. "In the night while breastfeeding, I had thoughts that he was a devil and I had to do something about it. "The thoughts were really menacing. I remember thinking that I wanted to hurt him. That was the point where I knew I needed help." Karis eventually contacted her health visitor and was referred to a perinatal mental health team. She said she was really well cared for after being diagnosed with postnatal depression and obsessive compulsive order, and had since recovered. However, she believes that more needs be done to encourage women to openly talk about how they are feeling. She said: "You're getting checked on but you don't get checked on enough and you don't get checked on enough during pregnancy either. "If someone had asked me at every appointment how I was feeling, I think I might have opened up sooner." A quarter of women experience perinatal mental health problems and 50% are never diagnosed, according to Dr Alain Gregoire, a consultant perinatal psychiatrist and president of the Maternal Mental Health Alliance charity. He said it was "absolutely essential" that health service staff who came into contact with women during pregnancy and postnatally were trained in mental as well as physical health. "Professionals definitely want to look after mental health but they don't have the training and facilities to do that," he said. Karen Sims, perinatal clinical nurse specialist at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said pregnancy and early parenthood could be "overwhelming" for new mothers. She said: "We want people to know they are not alone. "Our team works closely with midwives, health visitors, primary care and specialist services like the mother and baby unit to make sure support is easy to access." NHS figures show in the year leading up to April 2025, a record 64,805 women in England accessed specialist perinatal mental health services - an 111.7% increase over the past five years. Claire Murdoch, NHS England's national mental health director, said pregnancy and motherhood could bring "significant challenges". She said: "That's why our specialist perinatal mental health teams - made up of psychologists, peer support workers, and midwives - are dedicated to supporting women facing a wide range of difficulties, from prenatal anxiety and birth trauma to severe conditions such as postpartum psychosis." Karis said she was passionate about speaking openly about what she went through in the hope of helping others. "Support is absolutely out there but you have to find it," she explained. "I'm lucky, I've come through it and have a really supportive partner but it's such a lonely time." (NewsNation) — Poison control centers are sounding the alarm on nicotine pouches as the number of young children accidentally ingesting them rises. According to a study published in the medical journal Pediatrics, calls to poison control centers that involved children under the age of 6 with nicotine poisoning rose by over 760% between 2020 and 2023. Nearly all cases happened at home. While cases included chewing tobacco, vapes and nicotine replacements such as gum and lozenges, authors of the study pointed to the rising popularity of flavored nicotine pouches as the driving force behind accidental nicotine poisonings. Bed bugs: What to know, how to treat them The levels of nicotine in pouches can vary from 3 to 12 milligrams per pouch. At the lowest doses, it can release more nicotine than a cigarette, and even that small amount can be dangerous to children. Some minor symptoms of nicotine poisoning include nausea and vomiting, but as the dose increases, more serious side effects include high blood pressure and a fast heart rate, which can lead to seizures and respiratory failure. Although the vast majority of nicotine ingestions in children resulted in little to no harm, the study found that more than 1,600 children had serious medical outcomes. Two 1-year-old boys died after ingesting liquid nicotine. To keep children safe, the study authors recommend not using nicotine pouches in front of children so they don't imitate the behavior, and keeping them out of reach.
