Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey charged with raping two women

The Metropolitan Police said the midfielder faces five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault following alleged offences between 2021 and 2022.
Partey's lawyer Jenny Wiltshire said he 'denies all the charges against him', adding: 'He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.'
The Ghanaian international was charged four days after leaving the North London club.
The sexual assault allegation relates to a third woman, police added.
Partey is accused of two counts of rape against one woman and three counts of rape against another.
The force said it first received reports of an allegation of rape in February 2022.
Ms Wiltshire said the 32-year-old has 'fully co-operated with the police and CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) throughout their three-year investigation'.
Partey, of Hertfordshire, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on August 5.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, whose team is leading the investigation, said: 'Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward.
'We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team.
'You can contact detectives about this investigation by emailing CIT@met.police.uk.'
Partey joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 in a transfer worth around £45 million.
The defensive midfielder signed for the Spanish club in 2012 and made 188 appearances – as well as going out on loan to Mallorca and Leganes.
He played 35 games for the north London club in the Premier League last season, scoring four goals.
Partey has also made more than 50 appearances for Ghana – including at the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations.
He left Arsenal following the expiry of his contract on Monday.

Thomas Tuchel swaps messages with England stars during Club World Cup mission

England boss Thomas Tuchel has been keeping a keen eye on things at the Club World Cup in America, taking in matches, surveying training bases and chatting to his Three Lions stars about issues they may face again next summer Thomas Tuchel has checked in with his England stars at the Club World Cup as well as surveying potential training bases for next summer. Tuchel has already been to Club World Cup fixtures and has been keen to find out how the likes of Harry Kane and the England contingent at Manchester City and Chelsea have found the heat and conditions. ‌ They have faced searing temperatures both in games and in training while in the United States as the England boss has looked to reach out with players at matches in the tournament. ‌ It will be a big concern to the England boss also about how much holiday time the players will get after the Club World Cup so they get some rest ahead of World Cup qualifiers with Andorra and Serbia in Serbia. Plus they all have a big year ahead with next summer's World Cup and that has been another reason for Tuchel to jet out to the States. The England boss was always thinking he might jet back and forth as he saw Group matches before flying back to watch the under-21s win the European Championships in Slovakia. Tuchel was also pictured at Wimbledon but said after England's game with Senegal last month that he planned to dip in and out in the United States. England are checking out potential training bases with a clear idea of having a pre-camp and that could be in Miami to get the players used to the heat and conditions ahead of the World Cup which is being co-hosted by America, Canada and Mexico next summer. They are also looking at facilities in Kansas and also Dallas is a possibility, but it may also be that FIFA wants teams to travel across the country for later rounds rather than be based in one place as in previous tournaments. Former Canada boss John Herdman told Mirror Football that it will be a hugely challenging tournament for European teams. Herdman said: 'This World Cup is going to be massively challenging and having worked in North America I've had some experiences that I'd like to share with as many people as I can. 'Having been part of these preparations in the past, you have to prepare the players to have resilience but sometimes you want that chaos so you can actually embrace it.'

Update: Date: 8 mins Title: Post Content: Japan 0-7 Wales James HookFormer Wales fly-half on BBC Radio Wales The situation Wales are in now means Wales need to win, especially with the World Cup draw at the end of autumn, this is an opportunity to get two wins and move up the rankings. You look at the autumn campaign, they play New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina and Japan again, they're not easy games. Update: Date: 7 mins Title: Post Content: Japan 0-7 Wales A lot has been made in the build up about how greasy the ball will get, and we have our first dropped pass on the game from Amato Fakatava. I except there will be more where that came from as the game goes on. Update: Date: 6 mins Title: Post Content: Japan 0-7 Wales A first error from Wales, as Kieran Hardy's kick goes out on the full, so Japan have a line-out on the Welsh 10-metre line. Update: Date: 5 mins Title: Post Content: Japan 0-7 Wales Richie ReesFormer Wales international on Scrum V Live Japan were too passive defensively, but Wales would've worked on this move so many times during this week. The timing of the line from Ben Thomas made that try. Update: Date: 4 mins Title: Converted try - Japan 0-7 Wales Content: Ben Thomas, con Sam Costelow. The decision to kick to the corner pays off. It's excellent work from Taulupe Faletau from the line-out routine, and the timing of the pass to Ben Thomas gives the Cardiff man a simple finish. Sam Costelow adds the extras, and Wales have an early lead. Just what the doctor ordered. Update: Date: 4 mins Title: Post Content: Japan 0-0 Wales Sam Costelow looks to chip the ball in behind but has his kick blocked, so we will go back to the penalty. Wales opt to kick to the corner, a sign of intent early on. Update: Date: 3 mins Title: Post Content: Japan 0-0 Wales This is a positive start for Wales, who are into the Japan 22 and have an advantage. Update: Date: 3 mins Title: Post Content: Japan 0-0 Wales Rhys PatchellWales fly-half on BBC One Wales Japan are a team that comes out of the blocks very quickly, and this could've possibly taken the wind out of their sails. This is a great opportunity for James Ratti, he has the opportunity to get right into the game from the start. Update: Date: 2 mins Title: Post Content: Japan 0-0 Wales The first scrum of the game, deep in Japan territory, is a good one for Wales. Japan manage to keep ahold of the ball, but the clearing kick does not get much distance. Early opportunity to attack for Wales. Update: Date: 1 min Title: Replacement Content: Japan 0-0 Wales Ben Carter is carried off the field on a stretcher to a round of applause from the whole stadium. James Ratti is on to replace the injured Carter. Hopefully a swift recovery for the Dragons lock. Update: Date: 1 min Title: Early blow for Carter Content: Japan 0-0 Wales We are just 27 seconds into the game and the medical staff are already on for Wales' Ben Carter. The Wales second-row has been left on the floor after the first tackle of the game. It appears Carter took a hit to the side of the head during the tackle, and the medical teams are straight on. Update: Date: 1 min Title: Kick-off Content: Japan 0-0 Wales We are under way in the boiling heat in Japan. It is Sam Costelow who will take the kick-off. A huge game for Wales. This video can not be played Update: Date: 05:54 BST Title: Any win will do Content: Japan v Wales (06:00 BST) Gareth GriffithsBBC Sport Wales at Mikuni World Stadium, Kitakyushu It is not so much a nation expects. It is more something the Welsh rugby nation is desperate for. An international win. Any win will do. Wales will hope it finally comes this morning. It could help lift some doom and gloom. Welsh rugby is in the doldrums with the men's side enduring a record international 17-match losing run and currently having no permanent head coach. Only two players were selected for the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia with flanker Jac Morgan since left flying the flag alone for Wales, following an injury to scrum-half Tomos Williams. The long-term future of the domestic game is uncertain with fears the number professional sides could be cut. Mostly radio silence from the Wales Rugby Union (WRU) and regions in recent weeks has not helped allay the anxiety of players and fans. Welsh rugby needs something to grasp on to. Halting the losing streak might help start that healing process. Update: Date: 05:53 BST Title: Our survey says Content: Japan v Wales (06:00 BST) Matt Sherratt has revealed he sent a questionnaire to the squad to assess their mood going ahead of the trip to Japan. "It wasn't anything wordy, just three questions," he said. "What motivates you to play, what do you want to get out of the trip and what are you going to bring? "Literally every one was 'I play for my family, I want to enjoy the trip and I want to win for Wales'. So we've built everything around that." Update: Date: 05:52 BST Title: Post Content: Japan v Wales (06:00 BST) Dafydd JonesBBC Radio Wales commentator It's stilflingly hot here pitch side, even in the shade. The players are going through their final preparations in the baking hot sun. There's an intense 80 minutes to come. Update: Date: 05:51 BST Title: Some like it hot! Content: Japan v Wales (06:00 BST) Like I mentioned earlier, the match is going to be played in testing conditions. With the kick-off being 14:00 local time, temperatures are expected to reach 33C, while there will also be a high level of humidity. With this in mind, there will be a three-minute break midway through each half, while half-time will be extended to 20 minutes from the original 15 minutes. Expect the water boys to be busy as well.

Saturday's briefing: Saying goodbye to Diogo Jota and England start Euros

Football will briefly take a back seat on Saturday as Diogo Jota and Andre Silva's family and friends gather to celebrate their lives. On the pitch, England and Wales both launch their Euro 2025 campaigns in Switzerland with the defending champions in action after Rhian Wilkinson's finals first-timers. Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is facing a court appearance after being charged with five counts of rape. Mourners pay respects to Diogo Jota The funeral of Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva will take place in Portugal on Saturday morning. Mourners will gather to pay their respects to the two men at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar at 10am a day after a wake was held at the nearby Capela da Ressurreicao. Jota, 28, and his 26-year-old brother died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, in the early hours of Thursday morning. Their deaths prompted an outpouring of sympathy for Jota's wife Rute, who he married less than two weeks ago, their three children and the wider family from the football world and beyond. Lioness Leah raring to go England captain Leah Williamson revealed she finally felt free to let go of 'anxiety' on the eve of the Lionesses' European Championship opener against France in Zurich. The Arsenal defender, who famously lifted the trophy in 2022, was forced to miss England's first run to a Women's World Cup final two summers ago in Australia after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury. 'I've probably held some anxiety, I suppose, up until this moment,' said Williamson, when asked if missing the World Cup and her recovery had given her a new appreciation for this opportunity. 'I wanted to experience another tournament for England, and being away from home is special. It's a bit different to England in 2022, so I'm just taking everything in. I'm very excited. Obviously so much has changed, so I'm intrigued to come back and enjoy that tournament football.' The time has come for Wales Rhian Wilkinson is confident Wales are ready for their 'watershed moment' on a first major tournament stage at Euro 2025. While few expect Wales, who kick off their campaign against the Netherlands in Lucerne on Saturday evening as the lowest ranked team in the competition, to progress from a daunting group which also includes England and France, Wilkinson believes the game has changed in the country forever. Speaking at her pre-match press conference, she said: 'This is a wonderful team, great people, fantastic footballers, and we're going to be tested against some of the best in the world. 'That's what we've been wanting. To showcase Wales as a country, this team and their talent.' Thomas Partey charged Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been charged with raping two women. The Metropolitan Police said the Ghana international, whose contract at the Emirates Stadium expired on June 30, faces five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault following alleged offences between 2021 and 2022. Partey's lawyer Jenny Wiltshire said he 'denies all the charges against him', adding: 'He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.' The player, who is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on August 5, is accused of two counts of rape against one woman and three counts of rape against another. The sexual assault allegation relates to a third woman, police added. What's on today? European champions England launch their defence with a tough Group D opener against France in Zurich. Debutants and group rivals Wales also get under way when they face the Netherlands in Lucerne looking to gain a foothold in the competition. At the Club World Cup, Champions League winners Paris St Germain go head-to-head with Bayern Munich in Atlanta with a semi-final against either Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund, who meet at the MetLife Stadium, at stake.
