Former Arsenal star baffled by incoming signing: 'It doesn't make sense'

Former Arsenal defender William Gallas cannot get his head round why the Gunners are signing Christian Norgaard and have let Thomas Partey leave. The Brentford captain is yet to complete his move to the Emirates, but it is expected that the Denmark international will do so in the near future. A fee of £10m has reportedly been agreed and the 31-year-old is set to move across London, swapping the Bees for the Gunners. It comes as Thomas Partey leaves Arsenal this summer at the end of his contract, with the Ghana departing after making 167 appearances for the club. Partey was a regular in the first team last season, making 52 appearances in all competitions and scoring four goals. Gallas is confused as to why his former club would let the Ghanaian leave on a free and pay to bring in the Dane. However, the Frenchman may well have answered his own question as Arsenal are also expected to confirm the signing of Martin Zubimendi, which would have pushed Partey down the pecking order. That may well have made his wages seem too expensive and encouraged the player to find more starting opportunities elsewhere. 'I just don't understand why Arsenal are signing Christian Norgaard and are letting Thomas Partey go,' Gallas told Prime Casino. 'Okay, Partey is 32 and Norgaard is 31, but why spend the money on a player when you already have someone like Partey in the club? 'With Zubimendi arriving, Partey would likely have been his back-up, and perhaps he wanted to play more or perhaps Arsenal didn't think he was worth the contract that they wanted, but for me, it doesn't make sense to then let him leave and spend £10m on a replacement that is a year younger. 'I think it would have made more sense to keep Partey or sign a youngster, not go like for like with a new player that will have no sell-on value.' In reality, Norgaard isn't really coming in as a replacement for Partey, but more to replace Jorginho, who has left for Flamengo. The Dane is unlikely to start too many matches, unless there are injury problems, with Zubimendi coming in to replace Partey and partner Declan Rice in central midfield. Appearances: 122Goals: 11Assists: 12Yellow cards: 30 Red cards: 1 Both arrivals are still not confirmed though, with Brentford's director of football saying earlier this week that Norgaard's move is likely, but not completed. 'Arsenal approached us in the last two weeks about Christian – we've spoken regularly with Andrea Berta,' Phil Giles told Sky Sports on Monday. More Trending 'As it stands, I think it's more likely to happen than not. 'But we have to go through the full process, tick all the boxes, and we'll see at the end of it.' Kepa Arrizabalaga was announced as Arsenal's first summer signing on Monday, with Norgaard and Zubimendi expected to follow him by the end of the week. Zubimendi will be a much more expensive signing than the £5m Kepa and £10m Norgaard, with his deal setting Arsenal back more than £50m. 17 players leaving Arsenal as Mikel Arteta's summer rebuild takes shape

Arsenal are set to release 17 players on Monday as their contracts expire, with a number of high profile first-team squad members to leave the club A host of Arsenal players will bid farewell to the club on Monday. In total, 17 players will be saying their goodbyes to the Emirates Stadium due to their contracts expiring on June 30. The list of departing stars includes several high-profile first-team squad members, as well as promising young talents yet to make their mark on the game. Among those set to depart is Thomas Partey. The Ghanaian international was a regular fixture in the first team during the 2024/25 season and Mikel Arteta had expressed his desire for the midfielder to stay. ‌ However, no agreement has been reached over an extension and Partey is now poised to leave the club as a free agent. The former Atletico Madrid player has not yet officially posted a goodbye message to fans, and the club has not confirmed his departure, leaving a slim chance that an extension could be announced this week. ‌ As it stands, however, Partey will not be playing his football at the Emirates next season. One senior star who is definitely leaving is Kieran Tierney. The left-back quickly endeared himself to fans after joining from Celtic in August 2019 and went on to make 144 appearances for the club, even scoring in his last appearance against Southampton on the final day of last season. "It'll be hard but it's a happy goodbye," said a sentimental Tierney as he prepares to rejoin Celtic on July 1, reflecting fondly in his farewell interview. "I've loved it here, loved every minute of it. There are countless memories that are amazing for me; your debut is always special, and winning the FA Cup as well in the first season. It's a great team, and I'm so close to some of the boys in there. I've been here a long time, so it'll be sad but a happy goodbye." Arsenal 's loan signings Raheem Sterling and Neto wave goodbye, as they head back to Chelsea and Bournemouth respectively after a season at Emirates. Sterling found the net just once during his 28 appearances for Arsenal, whereas backup keeper Neto only appeared four times behind David Raya. Despite the buzz surrounding Nathan Butler-Oyedeji following his debuts in the Champions League and Premier League, the promising forward is set to leave Arsenal with speculation linking him with clubs around Europe. The 22 year old's future lies away from north London after limited opportunities this past season. Penning a heartfelt farewell on Instagram, the player expressed: "Dear Arsenal fans. After 14 years at this club my time at Arsenal has come to an end. I would like to thank firstly God for giving me the opportunity to realise my dream for playing for Arsenal. I want to extend my appreciation to the first team, my parents, all coaches, physios, chefs and cleaners and teammates I've worked alongside with and most importantly the life blood of the club, the fans. "I want to thank everyone who has supported me along the way through my hardships and through my good times. Arsenal will always hold a special place in my heart as being a boyhood Arsenal fan it was a dream come true to make my debut for the club. I will always be a part of the Arsenal family. I look forward to where my journey takes me next." ‌ Jimi Gower, aged 20, had the honour of his name appearing on the bench multiple times throughout the 2024/25 season, similarly to Jack Henry-Francis, 21, who is set to say his own goodbyes after a nine-year tenure with the squad. Khayon Edwards, another promising talent at 21, moves on after an impressive run in the Under-21s, where he netted 12 goals and dished out three assists across 21 matches – certainly catching the eye of prospective clubs. Meanwhile, other departing young guns may not share the same limelight but are no less talented, with bright futures predicted thanks to their evident skill. The 17 players set to depart Arsenal when their contracts expire on 30 June are: Kieran Tierney, Thomas Partey, Raheem Sterling, Neto, Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, Khayon Edwards, Jimi Gower, Jack Henry-Francis, Brian Okonkwo, Ismail Oulad M'Hand, Salah-Eddine Oulad M'Hand, Elian Quesada-Thorn, Jakai Fisher, Reece Clairmont, Romari Forde, Max Kuczynski, and Zacariah Shuaib. Thomas Partey makes final decision on Arsenal exit with one day left on contract

Arsenal have been in talks with Thomas Partey over a new contract since April, but the 32-year-old Ghana international is now set to leave the club next week as a free agent Thomas Partey is poised to leave Arsenal after the club failed to come to an agreement over a new contract for the midfielder. The Gunners had been keen to keep Partey, but he will now depart when his contract expires on Tuesday. Mikel Arteta spoke publicly about his desire to keep the 32-year-old, who played a key role in the 2024/25 campaign. But negotiations have dragged on and on and, with his current deal expiring on June 30, they have finally decided to call it quits. ‌ Arsenal first opened talks over an extension in April, but have already plugged the gap he is about to leave. Martin Zubimendi is joining in a £51million transfer from Real Sociedad next month and the Gunners have also bid £9.3m for Brentford captain Christian Norgaard after Jorginho also departed on a free transfer for Flamengo. ‌ Partey has been free to speak to foreign clubs since January and has been linked with a move to Fenerbahce, who are managed by Jose Mourinho, and has been offered a big-money contract in the Saudi Pro League. He has been with Arsenal since 2020, when he arrived from Atletico Madrid for £45m, and has made 167 appearances across all competitions. Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta, who used to work at Partey's old club Atleti, was the man tasked with agreeing new terms for Partey. But the club have now decided to walk away from the negotiating table. Asked in April whether there had been progress over a new deal for Partey, Arteta said: "Yes, there is progress with all the players. I'll leave that to Andrea and the club to decide and to talk about." Pushed on whether the intention is to keep Partey, he added: "The intention is very clear. I'll leave that to Andrea and the club to take a step forward." Arsenal's move for Zubimendi has been delayed because Real Sociedad want to bank the transfer fee in the new football financial year, which begins on July 1. The Gunners spent a long time negotiating with the Spanish side in order to secure a favourable deal in terms of spreading out the cost. ‌ Meanwhile, Arsenal are still looking to sign a centre-forward in the summer transfer window, with RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko the preference ahead of Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres. Arteta also wants to bolster his options in the wide positions, with Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze on the radar, along with Real Madrid 's Rodrygo. They are closing in on a deal for Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera, although their opening offer was dejected by the Spanish side. But a £5m deal for Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga will go through soon.
