Unity key to strength, prosperity: Chief Minister

Kota Kinabalu: The unity of the diverse races and religions in Sabah is the key to the State's strength and prosperity, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He urged all citizens to continue preserving the harmony enjoyed today as the most valuable legacy for future generations. 'Unity in diversity is Sabah's true strength. It is not a weakness, rather it is a uniqueness that we should be proud of and safeguard,' he said when launching the National Month, Sabah Day and Fly the Flag Campaign 2025 at The Magellan Sutera Resort, here, Friday. The Chief Minister said every individual is responsible for making places like schools, workplaces, business premises, places of worship and digital platforms to strengthen understanding, rather than sowing division. On the progress of Sabah's development, he said the achievements of the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 1.0 as of May 2025 showed encouraging success, with an average implementation rate reaching 94 per cent of the 467 initiatives planned. 'Among sectors that continue to be prioritised are agriculture, industry and tourism, along with efforts to enhance human capital, the peoples' wellbeing, infrastructure networks and environmental sustainability,' he said. Hajiji said various forms of assistance have also been provided to the people, including access to education and introducing the Sabah People's Protection Insurance Scheme that offers comprehensive benefits to citizens. He also urged all segments of society to fly the Jalur Gemilang everywhere, as a symbol of loyalty and love for the nation. 'Today's launch is not just a symbolic event, but a call for us to understand the true meaning of independence - not just freedom from colonisation, but also freedom from poverty and division,' he said. The National Day and Sabah Day celebration, held every August, is a historic moment that reminds the people of the struggle of their forefathers in defending the homeland and the dignity of the nation. 'As Malaysians in Sabah, we have a great responsibility to safeguard the blessings of independence and continue this legacy of struggle,' said Hajiji. GRS and Barisan electoral pact unlikely in Sabah state election
KOTA KINABALU: An electoral pact between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Barisan Nasional in the upcoming state election is improbable, according to Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) vice president Datuk Masiung Banah. He stated that it is unlikely for GRS and its former ally-turned-adversary Barisan to form an electoral understanding now, as it would confuse voters. This response follows Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's desire for all three parties—Barisan, GRS, and Pakatan Harapan—to avoid contesting against each other in the state election. Pakatan, led by Anwar, has already established a seat-sharing formula with Barisan and is working on a similar arrangement with GRS, led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. The current political arrangement sees Pakatan candidates not being challenged by either GRS or Barisan, while GRS and Barisan are expected to contest against each other in certain seats. All three coalitions are part of the federal unity government. The ongoing localised enmity between GRS, led by Hajiji, and Sabah Barisan, led by Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, has prevented any form of electoral pact in the upcoming state election. In the 2020 snap state election, GRS and Barisan teamed up to overthrow the Warisan-Pakatan Harapan state government led by Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal. However, Barisan withdrew its support for GRS in January 2023, though Hajiji remained in power with support from Sabah Pakatan assemblymen. Sabah Barisan has stayed in opposition at the state level and is critical of Hajiji's GRS government for not fulfilling agreed promises when they joined forces in 2020. "It is impossible for an understanding to be reached between GRS and Barisan, as it will confuse voters. After all, GRS and Pakatan have already reached a consensus to continue political cooperation," Masiung stated. On Sunday (Aug 3), Anwar mentioned that efforts were underway to prevent the three coalitions from contesting against each other in the 73 state seats, despite conflicts between Barisan and GRS. Anwar admitted that achieving no clashes in all seats might be difficult but hoped discussions would lead to a solution. Masiung, however, emphasised that if cooperation among the three coalitions is necessary, they would want Hajiji to lead the seat negotiations, as Anwar stated in Tawau on May 11. He asserted that GRS would not agree with Anwar's proposal for the three coalitions to form a 'triangular' electoral pact. Masiung added that GRS and Pakatan were already collaborating well, with strong political cooperation and governance. He noted that GRS has lost confidence in Barisan-Umno, which previously criticised cooperation with GRS and Pakatan after the January 2023 coup attempt, dubbed 'Kinabalu's move.' Since then, Sabah Umno and its leaders have continued to undermine the GRS-Pakatan state government through various strategies. "Sabah Umno and Barisan Sabah have decided not to work with GRS. We hope the Prime Minister respects our position and keeps his promise to allow Hajiji to lead seat negotiations with the coalitions," he added.

Ukrainian drone attack sparks fire at railway station in Volgograd region, Russia says

An unexploded drone fell on railway tracks near the Archeda train station, the administration of the region said on the Telegram messaging app, citing Volgograd region's governor, Andrei Bocharov as saying. "No damage to the tracks has been reported," the administration said. Russian state news agency TASS reported several regional trains were delayed in the area. Flights at the regional airport in the city of Volgograd, which is the administrative centre of the broader Volgograd region, were halted for several hours before resuming at around 0300 GMT, Russia's civil aviation authority Rosaviatsia said on Telegram. Russia's defence ministry said that its units destroyed a total of 61 Ukrainian drones overnight, including six over the Volgograd region. The ministry reports only the number of drones destroyed, not how many Ukraine launched. The region's administration cited Bocharov as saying the attack was "massive" and targeted energy and transport infrastructure. Reuters could not independently verify the reports. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine, which has staged frequent attacks on infrastructure inside Russia that Kyiv deems key to Moscow's war efforts - including on the Volgograd region which lies not far from the border with Ukraine. GRS-PH alliance firm, no plan to include BN: Masiung

He said such a three-way understanding may confuse voters, adding that GRS and PH had already agreed to continue their existing political collaboration. Responding to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's suggestion on Sunday, Masiung said Gagasan Rakyat, a main pillar of GRS, would prefer to maintain its current alliances. Anwar, during a meeting with Sabah PKR leaders in Kota Kinabalu, had expressed hope to avoid three-cornered fights through negotiations between GRS, BN, and PH. Masiung stated that GRS had lost trust in BN following the 'Kinabalu Move' episode, which he said involved betrayal and subsequent attacks against the coalition. He said GRS and PH have established a working relationship through the State Government's administration and do not intend to complicate matters with a new arrangement.
