EU official says €175 million Syria recovery package 'clear message' of support
Ms. Suica announced the package in Damascus on Wednesday (June 4, 2025), saying it would focus on sectors including energy, education, health and agriculture, helping rebuild Syria's economy, support its institutions and promote human rights.
"I came here... with a clear message that we are here to assist and help Syria on its recovery," Ms. Suica told AFP in an interview on Thursday (June 5, 2025).
"We want that reconstruction and recovery will be Syria-owned and Syria-led," she said, on the first visit by an EU commissioner since a transitional government was unveiled in late March.
"We want to see Syria to be a regular, normal, democratic country in the future," she added.
Syria has been navigating a delicate transition since Islamist-led forces ousted longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December after nearly 14 years of civil war.
The European Union announced last month it would lift economic sanctions on Syria in a bid to help its recovery.
"This is a pivotal moment — a new chapter in EU-Syria relations," Ms. Suica said on X, calling her meeting with interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa "constructive".
Like Syria's neighbours, Western governments are keen to steer it onto the road to stability after the war triggered an exodus of millions of refugees.
Refugee returns should be "safe, voluntary and dignified", Ms. Suica said.
The EU has not designated Syria as a safe country for returns "because we don't want to push people to come here and then they don't have a home", she said.
The EU last month sanctioned three Syrian militia groups and two of their leaders for serious human rights abuses over their alleged involvement in sectarian massacres in the costal heartland of the Alawite minority, to which Assad belongs, in March.
"We cannot pronounce one part of Syria safe and another not," Ms. Suica said, noting that designating Syria a safe country needs "unanimity among 27 European member states".
She said Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani would attend a ministerial meeting involving almost a dozen Mediterranean countries in Brussels on June 23.
A statement released on Wednesday (June 4, 2025) said that the European Commission was "actively pursuing the integration of Syria into several key initiatives with its Mediterranean partner countries".
"We want to see Syria united" and inclusive, Ms. Suica told AFP. "This is a process. It will happen step by step."

If 14,000 men have benefitted from Ladki Bahin Yojana, we will recover money from them: Ajit Pawar
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Saturday said the government will recover money from those men who have taken advantage of the state's flagship Ladki Bahin Yojana which was said to be largely instrumental in bringing the BJP-led Mahayuti back to power in Maharashtra. Over 14,000 men have been reportedly benefitted from the scheme. 'The Ladki Bahin Yojana was implemented as financial assistance for poor women. It was brought with honest intention. It was not meant for men. And therefore, we are going to recover the money from them. If they do not co-operate, we will take action against them,' Pawar told reporters when asked about the media reports that 14,298 men have benefitted from the scheme. The scheme was started in August 2024 before the Assembly elections. The beneficiaries got Rs 1,500 per month in their bank accounts. As many as 14,298 men have apparently received benefits of over Rs 21 crore. Sports Minister Dattatraya Bharne, who in the past had admitted how the scheme had put additional financial burden on the state government, said, 'If men have got benefits from the scheme, the government will take appropriate action in the matter.' Another NCP Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said, 'If this has happened, then government will investigate.' Shashikant Shinde, NCP (S-P) state president, said, 'We have been consistently saying that those who were not eligible were getting benefits of the Ladki Bahin Yojana. In the House too, we had been asking the government to recover the amount which was wrongly distributed. The scheme was wrongly implemented.' Baramati MP Supriya Sule said it has come to light that some men have taken advantage of the Ladki Bahin Yojana. 'The government hurriedly got lakhs of forms filled up by women before the Assembly elections,' she said, while demanding ED and CBI investigation against contractors who were tasked with getting forms filled up from women about the Ladki Bahin Yojana.

She also underlined that the government will continue to rely on increased public capital expenditure as a major tool to drive development. Speaking at a book launch event in New Delhi, Sitharaman said, 'To maintain the growth is the topmost priority. Growth is the topmost, and therefore, it will have an overlap with how you create jobs…', as per news agency PTI. Her comments come at a time when India's economy is projected to grow at 6.5 per cent in FY25, the slowest pace in four years, down from 9.2 per cent growth in FY24. As per PTI, the Reserve Bank of India has trimmed its GDP growth forecast for the current financial year to 6.5 per cent, down from an earlier estimate of 6.7 per cent. The Economic Survey has pegged growth for FY26 in the range of 6.3 per cent to 6.8 per cent. The finance minister highlighted that capital investments by the government will continue to be central to economic momentum. 'Public investments have kept pace. It has been Prime Minister Narendra Modi's clear instruction that we have to have capital expenditure grow and grow significantly,' she said, adding that such investments are a 'primary driver of sustained economic growth'. Sitharaman also said that India must remain relevant globally and aim for a leadership role, especially by reshaping the voice of the Global South. At the same time, balancing domestic economic ambitions within the limits of fiscal responsibility is also a key area of focus, she noted. She further pointed to the government's efforts to attract more foreign investments, stressing the importance of a favourable FDI regime and highlighting the healthy competition among Indian states in luring global investors. On trade, Sitharaman indicated a shift towards bilateral deals over multilateral arrangements. 'We have seen bilateral agreements being signed in the last four to five years with Australia, UAE and the UK. Negotiations are progressing well with the United States as well as the European Union,' she said, as per PTI. Speaking on India's relations with China, she said that there were initial signs of improvement following external affairs minister S Jaishankar's recent visit. 'There is something, some kind of a beginning… how far it will go is something we will have to wait and see,' she remarked, while also stressing the need for 'a sense of caution'. India committed to supporting Maldivian people: PM Modi
New Delhi: India-Maldives relations continue to grow through cooperation in different sectors and New Delhi is committed to supporting the aspirations of the Maldivian people, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday after participating in the Indian Ocean nation's Independence Day celebrations as the guest of honour. The celebrations included a parade by the Maldivian National Defence Forces and other local organisations, along with cultural performances by local artists and school children that highlighted the achievements of the Maldives. 'India and the Maldives share a deep-rooted partnership built on mutual respect, shared values and a long history of cultural and economic exchanges. Our relationship continues to grow, shaped by people-to-people ties and cooperation in various sectors,' Modi said on social media. 'India remains committed to supporting the aspirations of the Maldivian people and to working together for the betterment of our planet.' The celebrations came a day after Modi held wide-ranging talks with Muizzu and India announced new measures to bolster the economy of the Maldives, including a rupee-denominated credit line of $565 million and a 40% cut in annual debt repayment obligations. The two sides also agreed to launch negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) and to deepen defence and maritime security cooperation. Modi's visit, the first by a foreign head of government since Muizzu came to power in November 2023, marked a significant turnaround in bilateral ties after a bumpy stretch over the past year. Muizzu, who came to power on an 'India Out' campaign, had demanded the withdrawal of more than 80 Indian defence personnel deployed to the Maldives to operate three aircraft and sought to move Male closer to Beijing. There was a thaw in relations after Muizzu was invited to Modi's swearing-in for his third term as PM last June and India continued economic assistance to help the Indian Ocean archipelago to cope with a balance of payments crisis at a time when such assistance wasn't forthcoming from China. Modi said it was an honour for him to join the 60th Independence Day celebrations of the Maldives. 'This momentous occasion showcased the rich cultural heritage and vibrant spirit of the Maldivian people…From its ancient maritime traditions to global leadership in critical areas like climate change, the Maldives has carved a unique place for itself on the world stage,' he said on social media. He also thanked Muizzu and the government of the Maldives as he concluded what he said was a 'productive visit'. Modi said his 'productive talks' with Muizzu will add significant energy to bilateral relations. Earlier in the day, Modi held separate meetings with former president Mohamed Nasheed, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Speaker of the Maldivian Parliament, and vice president Hussain Mohamed Latheef and reiterated India's support for the development of the Maldives. He also met members of different political parties of the Maldives. Modi told Nasheed, whom he described as a strong advocate of deeper bilateral friendship, that the Maldives will always be a 'valued pillar of our Neighbourhood First policy and Mahasagar vision'. India will keep supporting Maldives through capacity building and developmental cooperation, he said. He and Abdulla discussed the close relationship between the parliaments of the two countries. Modi said the formation of the India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group is a welcome step. Modi and Latheef discussed key pillars of bilateral ties. 'Our nations continue to work closely in sectors like infrastructure, technology, climate change, energy and more…We look forward to deepening this partnership in the years to come,' Modi said. Modi also interacted with the Indian community in the Maldives. 'It is commendable how they are contributing to Maldives' progress and at the same time remain connected to their roots in India,' he said.
