Two Grade 9 students in custody after caught bullying fellow student in viral video
Video footage circulating online shows the two ninth-grade students punching, elbowing, and kicking a 15-year-old tenth-grade student inside school premises in Isabela City, Basilan on June 25, 2025. The incident was reported to the Isabela City Police Station on June 30, 2025.
According to Police Regional Office 9 Police Major Shellamie Chang, the two Grade 9 students were reportedly forcing the victim to do something against his will.
'Pinipilit siyang manigarilyo or something, basta may pinapagawa sa kaniya na ayaw niyang gawin,' she said in a report by Marisol Abdurahman on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday.
(He was being forced to smoke or something, he was being forced to do something that he did not want to do.)
Chang said the two students will face charges of violating the Anti-Bullying Act, but will be handled in accordance with the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act considering that they are still minors, and will be considered as children in conflict with the law.
For his part, Basilan National High School principal Arnel Hajan said the incident may have just been for laughs: 'Katuwaan, kursonadahan, trip? Parang ganoon. (For fun, he was targeted, or a trip? Seems like it.)'
Hajan said the victim, who experienced dizziness and vomiting, was initially brought to a local hospital to be treated, before being transferred to a facility in Zamboanga City.
'Pinadala po natin sa local hospital then after, trinansfer namin sa Zamboanga City para mabigyan ng magandang gamot at medical attention,' he said in the same report.

Authorities said they have since heightened police visibility both inside and outside the campus, and have activated the CCTVs in the area.

PMA punishes cadets accused of maltreatment
The Philippine Military Academy (PMA) has punished four of its cadets allegedly involved in maltreating another cadet. 'The involved cadets were given appropriate punishment depending on the degree of their participation. The PMA conducted its own investigation and confirmed that the four cadets, indeed, hurt the complainant. However, the academy clarified that what happened could not be considered hazing under Republic Act 8049 or the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018. 'Injuries were caused by the classmates venting their frustration on their squadmate because they believed the performance of their squadmate is affecting their squad. The incident does not fall under the legal definition of hazing,' Lt. Jesse Saludo, PMA spokesperson, said. "It falls on 'conduct unbecoming' because they are inflicting physical farm to a fellow soldier," Saludo told Marisol Abdurahman on a 24 Oras report on Monday, July 7, 2025. The PMA said it respects the family's decision to pursue legal charges and recognizes the victim's right to take the case to civilian court. 'The victim still retains his right to file a case in civilian court should he choose to do so,' Saludo said. The complaint is now with the Baguio Prosecutor's Office, where authorities are reviewing whether the case merits the issuance of arrest warrants.

DOJ eyes Taal Lake search for sabungero remains this week
Asked if the authorities had specific locations in mind, Remulla said, 'Merong fishpond lease ang isang suspect na ano natin, tinutukoy natin. Bali 'yun ang ating ano... ground zero natin." The authorities are looking to start searching Taal Lake this week for the bodies of the missing sabungeros or cockfight enthusiasts who were abducted and allegedly killed in 2021 to 2022, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said on Monday. One of the accused in the abduction of some of the cockfighters, Julie "Dondon" Patidongan has said that the victims were killed on the days they were taken. He said their bodies were tied to sandbags before they were thrown into the lake. Patidongan also named businessman Atong Ang as a mastermind in the case. He also linked actress Gretchen Barretto to the disappearances. Both have denied anything to do in the abductions and the killings. Ang also filed a complaint for robbery and other crimes against Patidongan. 'We're asking them to start this week,' Remulla told reporters. 'We want to map it out and look at the condition so we can plan how to go about it,' he added. Asked if the authorities had specific locations in mind, Remulla said, 'Merong fishpond lease ang isang suspect na ano natin, tinutukoy natin. Bali 'yun ang ating ano... ground zero natin."
