Filipinos call on elected officials to fulfill campaign promises

Filipinos are calling on the over 18,000 elected officials who are set to officially assume their posts on Monday, June 30, 2025, to fulfill the promises they made while campaigning earlier this year. According to University of the Philippines National College of Public Administrative and Governance (UP NCPAG) professor and former dean Maria Fe Mendoza, the public should take government officials into account. 'The 31% youth vote parang spelled the difference. May pag-asa pala tayo, kasi surprise 'yun, diba, at 'yun nga, despite the surveys before the elections, ang napunta sa magic five ay 'yung mga hindi natin inaasahan,' she said in a report by Raffy Tima on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday. (We have hope, because it was a surprise that despite the surveys before the elections, those who entered the magic five are those we did not expect.) The top five senators in the May elections were Senators Christopher 'Bong' Go, Paolo Benigno 'Bam' Aquino, Ronald 'Bato' dela Rosa, Erwin Tulfo, and Francis Pangilinan. Aquino and Pangilinan had been outside the top five or even top 12 in the polls that were taken leading up to the election. There are 18,255 officials set to take office on Monday, majority of whom are set to have a three-year term save for the 12 senators who will serve for the next six years. This is 155 more than those elected in the previous polls, given the establishment of a new province and eight new municipalities. GMA Integrated News asked voters what they expect from the officials: 'Kung ano 'yung nagawa nung nakaraan, previous na nakaupo, kung maganda na 'yung ginagawa niya, dapat lamangan niya para ang mga tao, okay ang kabuhayan,' said one man. (What was done by the previous administration, if it was good, the next administration should surpass that so that livelihood would be okay). 'Gawin nila 'yung best nila tsaka 'yung sa plataporma nila, 'yung magagandang mga plano nila eh gawin nila ngayon, tuparin nila ngayon,' said a client at a barbershop. (They should do their best and their platforms, the good plans they have, they should fulfill that now.) ''Yung mga pangako nila, dapat tuparin nila 'yun. Kung hindi naman natupad eh para saan pa po 'yung pag-e-elect nila?' the barber said. (They should fulfill their promises. If not, what were they elected for?) ''Wag puro pangako kasi 'pag sa kampanya malakas sila, pinapasok nila 'yung mga eskinita, pero 'pag nanalo na, hindi nila mabisita kung sino 'yung mga nasa laylayan ng lipunan,' said another man. (They shouldn't be full of promises because during the campaign, they would reach even the alleys but when they win, they cannot even visit those in the margins.) 'Inaasahan ko sana magkaroon ng trabaho 'yung mga nahihirapang maghanap ng trabaho, lalo na 'yung mga katulad ko na 21 years old, tsaka 'yung ano rin po, 'yung pagbaba ng presyo ng bilihin,' said a street vendor. (I am hoping that there would be jobs for those having difficulties to secure employment, especially those like me who are 21 years old, along with the lower prices of goods.) — Jon Viktor D. Areas in Bukidnon, Davao Region flooded after continuous rains

Some areas in Bukidnon and in the Davao Region were flooded over the weekend due to the strong rains brought about by the southwest monsoon or Habagat, including a residential area in Davao del Sur where a wake had to be moved as waters reached waist-high. A river in Barangay Tacul in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur was recorded to have overflowed with the water spilling over to nearby houses, and forcing a wake to be moved in a nearby gymnasium, as reported by Rgil Relator on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday. Residents of Purok Bankerohan and Purok Kawayan who were trapped in their residences were also evacuated by authorities. Official figures regarding affected individuals have yet to be released. Floods were also recorded in Bukidnon, where zero visibility was reported along the Talaingod Bukidnon national highway. A road along Sitio Saladoc in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental was likewise impassable, due to the debris caused by the rains. The state weather bureau PAGASA said the southwest monsoon or Habagat is expected to continue to bring rains over most of the country on Sunday. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA Integrated News

Tawilis from Taal Lake safe to eat, says BFAR

Tawilis fished from Taal Lake are safe for human consumption, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said Sunday, following a whistleblower's claims that the bodies of missing sabungeros, or cockfighters, abducted in 2021 were thrown into its waters. According to the BFAR, tawilis is a small pelagic fish that usually stays in shallow waters, and feeds on plankton. It also clarified that tawilis, a freshwater sardine, naturally multiplies its population quickly. 'Wala pong dapat ipangamba kasi unang una, itong tawilis, small pelagic fish po siya at ang pagkain niya nga po, 'yung mga planktons na kabilang na diyan 'yung mga plant-based planktons, at hindi po sila masabi nating carnivorous,' BFAR chief information officer Nazzer Briguera said in a report on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday. (There is nothing to fear because firstly, the tawilis is a small pelagic fish and it feeds on planktons, including plant-based planktons, and we cannot say that it is carnivorous.) The agency also clarified that other fish such as tilapia and bangus are usually cultured in fish pens, and do not freely swim in Taal Lake. This comes as sellers in the area have reported a decline in their sales, citing fears of consumers that the fish in the lake may have eaten human remains. They have already clarified that the fish sold in markets were raised by the fisherfolk. "Totoy," one of the accused in the disappearance of the 34 cockfighters, earlier claimed that their bodies were thrown into Taal Lake after being caught cheating by weakening their own roosters and betting on their opponents' roosters. — Jon Viktor D. Rains bring floods to Mandaluyong streets

Streets of Barangay Plainview in Mandaluyong City were flooded after the continuous rains over the weekend, forcing residents to wade through the waters filled with floating garbage and even dead rats. The floods were caused by the continuous rains on Saturday, June 28, and continued to rise until the early hours of Sunday, June 29, forcing residents to wade through for them to get home. A child was seen trying to swim, while others hitched a ride with bigger vehicles such as trucks. According to Barangay Plainview desk officer Carl John Lagumbay, the floods came as the canals were blocked, preventing the pumping stations from operating properly. 'Sa ibang drainage po, may mga basura lang po talaga na naba-block po 'yung parang pinaka-way po ng tubig kaya medyo natatagalan po ng konti,' he said in a report by Bea Pinlac on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday. ''Yung ibang buga po kasi ng tubig, imbis po na papasok sa drainage, palabas po 'yung buga ng tubig,' he added. (In some of the drainages, there really is trash blocking the way of the water so it takes time. Instead of flowing into the drainage, the water flowed away.) The state weather bureau PAGASA said the southwest monsoon or Habagat is expected to continue to bring rains over most of the country on Sunday. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA Integrated News

1-year-old toddler dies while sleeping on stomach; medical experts caution parents

A one-year old child who recently died while sleeping has brought attention to the risks of children sleeping lying face down or on their stomach. Listen to what medical experts advise. In his report on Sunday's 24 Oras Weekend, Dano Tingcungco talked with Jennifer (not her real name) about the tragedy that took her one and a half year old child. Jennifer said it was an uneventful evening last June 21 at their home. After dinner of rice and soup at 8 p.m., the child had some milk before falling to sleep an hour later. At around 12:40 a.m., Jennifer said she woke up and decided to check on her child who was lying on his stomach. She noticed the toddler was listless and not moving. When she turned on the lights, the child's mouth had turned to a 'violet' color. The shocked mother rushed her child to the hospital where it was discovered there was a large amount of liquid and food in his lungs. Aspiration pneumonia was ruled as the cause of death. In babies, aspiration pneumonia occurs when foreign substances like food, liquid, or vomit are inhaled into the lungs. Jennifer said she was told by the medical staff that her child suffocated because he was lying prone while he slept. 'Ang instance daw po ng tao kapag hindi makahinga ay masusuka. Sa case po ng anak ko dahil nakadapa po siya hindi niya po mailabas yung suka kaya po dumerecho sa baga niya and then nalunod daw po siya sa sarili niyang suka. Nakadapa po siya, naka close ang bibig,' Jennifer said. (I was told in that instance when a person could not breathe they would throw up. In my child's case he was lying on his stomach so he could not expel his vomit which then ended up in his lungs. He drowned in his own vomit. He was lying prone and his mouth was closed.) Jennifer cautioned other parents to be careful with their children who have the practice of sleeping in the lying down position. Risks Experts said that sleeping on one's stomach can be unsafe, particularly to small children. 'Some of the research shows that sleeping on the stomach can block the airway because it increases what we call rebreathing that means they breathe their own exhaled air. Bumababa (It decreases) oxygen sa katawan (in their bodies) and level of CO2 rises and that is not good,' said pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Co. 'If you have a baby in chest position, 'di nila kayang bumaligtad (they are unable) to stay on the back position. As the child gets older, it doesn't happen anymore,' Co added. The American Academy of Pediatrics launched the 'Back to Sleep' campaign to promote safe sleep practices for infants, specifically recommending that healthy babies sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It is also recommended for parents or guardians to closely check if their small children have a problem with breathing, especially since they are unable to share what they are feeling. —RF, GMA Integrated News
