Four summer make-up trends to try — and how to pull them off

Four summer make-up trends to try — and how to pull them off

Independent4 days ago

A noticeable shift is underway in the beauty world as summer 2025 ushers in a lighter, more ethereal makeup mood.
While 2024 saw a surge in heavy blush, ultra-skinny brows, and diamante eye looks, these trends have, rather predictably, not endured.
This season, the focus has shifted toward freshness, with natural eyes, frosted finishes, and a rise in skincare-infused products.
Here's what make-up artists say are their favourite trends that you should try this season.
Tinted SPF
Any dermatologist will tell you, the best thing you can do to prevent skin laxity and wrinkles isn't Botox or exosome treatments – but daily SPF.
However, sun creams and SPFs have traditionally been either too oily, too chalky or too white cast to wear every day or sit comfortably under make-up.
This is why virtually every makeup brand is now releasing its answer to the problem: tinted SPFs.
'One of the biggest make-up mistakes I see is people not wearing SPF under their make-up,' says CCO and founder of her namesake brand, Charlotte Tilbury.
'It is so important to wear SPF every day, even when it is not sunny outside, which is why we created the UV flawless poreless primer.'
'The rise in popularity of K-beauty this year has had an influence on our summer makeup trends. There is a lot of emphasis on skincare and 'skinimalism',' says celebrity and Strictly Come Dancing make-up artist Ariane Young.
Tinted SPF, she explains, allows for 'minimal coverage [and] evens out your skin tone while also giving a hydrated glowy look.'
Compared to BB or CC creams, tinted SPF is lighter and lends itself to the growing appetite for low-effort beauty.
'If you love that 'no make-up, make-up' look,' Young says, 'a tinted SPF is your best friend.'
And unlike most bases, the more you wear it, the better your skin will look, preventing pigmentation and redness.
Cool-toned eyes
A nostalgic nod to early-2000s shimmer is making its way back into our makeup bags.
Icy whites, sheer lavenders and frosted blues are back, only this time they're less Paris Hilton and more Hailey Bieber.
'While icy, cool-toned eyeshadows were incredibly popular back in the late nineties and early Noughties, they were often chalky, hard to blend and unforgiving,' explains Tilbury.
'We don't want it to look like the Tin Man!' says Young, 'the trick is to pick a focal point to avoid going too frosted with everything.'
A single frost-toned eye against matte skin and a neutral lip keeps the look more mature.
'Blend and diffuse the colour all over the lid so you have a light wash of colour,' says Young, and if you're not confident with eyeshadow, 'you can always add a pop of colour with a fun eyeliner colour. This trend is all about having fun with make-up and is perfect for festival season.'
If you're not used to icy tones, 'there are ways of incorporating cooler-toned make-up into your everyday staples by swapping out your warm eyeshadows and gold glosses for greyer inspired shades,' explains MAC Cosmetics senior make-up artist for the UK and Ireland, Carly Utting.
'This may sound scary if you're used to bronzes and warm tones, but a balance of both works wonders!'
She loves pairing a cool-toned lipliner with a honey lipstick in a nod to the Nineties.
Ghost lashes
Subtle and almost imperceptible, the ghost lash has emerged as this summer's biggest trend. Wearing make-up without mascara may instil fear in most, but thick coats of mascara and showy falsies are no longer the go-to.
Make-up artist Mira Parmar describes it as 'a minimalist, no-mascara or barely-there lash look,' one that's become a red carpet favourite for celebrities like Zendaya, Sophie Turner, Hailey Bieber and Lily-Rose Depp.
'This effortless style gives your lashes a much-needed break from heavy products, looks naturally elegant, and saves time, making it a perfect match for the 'clean girl' aesthetic,' she says.
But this isn't simply a fleeting fad, as Parmar says, 'It's more than just a trend, it marks a shift toward natural beauty and skin-first makeup, which is rooted in authenticity, minimalism and self-care.'
Crisp, hyper-lined lips are out, and the messy, diffused, French girl lip is in.
'Creating the perfect lip shape is out, instead [people are] going for a more blended and blurred lip line,' says Young.
'There's a move towards a sheerer coverage plumped lip, enhanced by liner and filled with just gloss,' says Utting, who says natural lips with a slight sheen is a trend 'growing at a rapid rate.'

Strictly Come Dancing hunk 'signs up for Celebrity SAS' just weeks after shock split from fiancée

A Strictly Come Dancing hunk has reportedly signed up for Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, just weeks after his shock split from his fiancée. Ben Cohen, 46, is reportedly gearing up to take on the gruelling Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins challenge. The former rugby player, who is well known for his appearance on Strictly more than a decade ago, is looking forward to 'throw himself into a new challenge' following his split from fiancée of 12 years Kristina Rihanoff. A TV insider told The Sun: 'Ben has had a difficult few months with his split from Kristina, having to sell their home and also having spiralling business debts. 'Celeb SAS is not only a good pay day for him, but it's a new challenge to throw himself into. 'Ben is obviously a sportsman and a very physical, competitive player so if anyone can handle the SAS recruitment process, it's him.' MailOnline have contacted Ben and Celebrity SAS representatives for comment. Ben and Kristina's relationship was the product of the BBC show's infamous curse when he left his then-wife Abby in 2013, before going onto date Kristina, before money troubles reportedly tore them apart. MailOnline was told that it was the severe financial difficulties they had recently experienced are believed to have been behind their split. The extent of the couple's struggles were laid bare in unusual circumstances - during a court appearance last September when Kristina was caught driving without insurance. Giving evidence during the case, England World Cup winning rugby star Ben admitted he had bungled the handling of their car insurance policy and told how he was 'fighting to save his relationship and home'. A friend of the couple said: 'The past six months have been hell for them and it has torn the love they had apart. For the sake of their family, they have chosen to go forward as separate individuals. 'Those close to them who know them as a couple had hoped they would be able to work things out but for now it's over and it looks like there's no going back.' The couple were left with crippling debts after they ploughed every penny they had into a yoga studio which plunged into crisis during the Covid pandemic. According to The Sun, the couple are now left with a crippling £1million debt. In a tortuously frank admission Cohen told the court: 'I get up every day and I fight not to lose everything - to lose my cars and my house and my relationship. I'm so overdrawn.' When questioned about the strains on his and Rihanoff's relationship, he said: 'We're still living together. We're in it financially. 'We're in business together so the problem is that we opened the business before Covid and we got the worst severities of it and in all honestly this is just another problem for me to deal with. 'I've got credit cards that are overdrawn. I'm overdrawn in both accounts. We have got a business debt because of Covid. It's just another problem.' MailOnline was given an insight into the struggles during an interview with the couple in May 2021. They started Soo Yoga Group together in June 2017 - four years after falling for each other when they partnered on the 11th series of the hit BBC show. Companies House records showed that the Soo Yoga Group Ltd was £488,470 in the red in its last submitted set of accounts for the year ending on July 31, 2022. The company was facing being struck off and Cohen has since resigned as a director leaving Rihanoff as its sole director - while other companies linked to the couple were also in difficulties. It was not long before the couple had put their £1.75million five-bedroom home in Sywell, Northamptonshire, where they had lived since 2016 on the market. Cohen resorted to selling topless photos of himself in a bid to raise some much needed cash. Ahead of the new year, he created a calendar with 1,000 personally signed editions selling at £32.95 a time in the hope of raking in £33,000. The couple revealed the irony of how they set off full of hope on a project to improve health and wellbeing only to be plunged into a crisis which left them facing losing everything and damaging their mental health. Russian-born Rihanoff - who left Strictly in 2015 before giving birth to their daughter Mila the following year - had worked hard to retrain as a yoga instructor. But the couple were forced to close their seven-studio yoga centre when the pandemic struck just nine months after opening. The studio offered dance, meditation and pilates classes while Cohen taught high intensity training. Rihanoff told MailOnline: 'The company is a new company we'd just set it up. We invested everything we've ever had. 'It was awful. I put everything into it and you don't even have a chance to develop the business. 'We opened in August after the first lockdown and had a huge spike. It's a family orientated centre. Then November lockdown, December it was awful because we didn't know the end of it. It was forever and ever and ever. Fingers crossed we can go back to normality soon.' She spoke of struggles with depression which has 'skyrocketed through the lockdowns' and admitted they struggled. At that point the couple were able to temporarily run outdoor classes on tennis courts in Northampton but told of their plans to expand the business into a nationwide venture - hoping to emule the success of David Lloyd's sports club empire. Cohen said: 'Yes it's great being outside and doing stuff but it shouldn't be at that point - we haven't earned a penny.' Cohen told how it was 'tough to run a business' but said of his hopes: 'Essentially we want to do what David Lloyd did. Everyone thought he was crazy. David has been helping us with this too. We want to grow this across the country.' The couple appeared to be back on track after getting engaged on a sun-kissed beach in the Maldives in 2022 and told of their hopes of tying the knot in Tuscany or Oxfordshire. Ben told Hello! Magazine in 2023: 'Over the last nine years we've been through the wringer. 'To support each other through difficult times in business is the ultimate test in a relationship. 'I've watched her flourish, from her becoming a mum to growing as a businesswoman, and it has strengthened our bond.' But their ongoing struggles were revealed when Rihanoff, who worked on Strictly between 2008 and 2013, appeared at Northampton Crown Court to unsuccessfully appeal a sentence for driving without insurance. Sobbing throughout the hearing, she told the court it would be financially devastating if she was disqualified. She said she needed to drive to judge ballroom competitions across the country, which earn her around £2,000 a month, and to take Mila to school. MailOnline later revealed the couple's yoga company had plunged almost £500,000 in debt.

Strictly star hits out at 'tough' axing after brutal way they found out

Former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips has branded her exit from the BBC dance competition as 'tough' as she gave her opinion on the latest scandals Arlene Phillips has admitted she found her Strictly Come Dancing exit "tough," after being suddenly replaced without warning. The dancer and former judge, 82, saw her departure from the hit BBC competition spark an ageism row as Alesha Dixon, then 30, took her place. Despite having decades of experience as a dancer and choreographer, Arlene found out about the bosses' decision through the radio rather than being told directly. Controversy has continued to surround the dance competition over the years, with actress Amanda Abbington sparking a bullying row. ‌ She had accused her dance partner, Giovanni Pernice, of bullying during their time together in 2023, which he denied. This year, the drama off stage continued once again as Wynne Evans was booted off the tour due to his behaviour. ‌ Arlene has since opened up on her own exit as well as the scandals that have followed. She told The Sunday Times: "I loved my time on Strictly and it was tough when I left, but I got up and carried on with life. "I wasn't there when accusations of bullying were made against some of the dancers, but I was quite strict when I started teaching." The dancer credits her children with learning how to communicate without losing her temper. "I realised there was a different way to talk to people when I had a child - I didn't want to lose my temper," she confessed. "There are ways to get people to do as you want without shouting." Last year, Arlene admitted she 'kicked, screamed and sobbed' when she found out she was getting the boot from her beloved show. She had joined Strictly in 2004, but after the show wrapped in 2008, Arlene found out she'd got the chop. Speaking out about the axe in a chat with the Mirror, the decorated Dame candidly admitted how she dealt with the news. She revealed: "I gave myself 48 hours to kick, scream, cry and sob, and eat scones with cream and jam, then I made myself wake up and get on with it." ‌ Arlene went on to admit she felt she didn't ask the right questions after finding out the news, having later had more time to reflect. She continued: "I was very fragile because I had a bereavement the day before [her manager died]. "I wanted to know in detail and I wanted to know the real reason at the point when they decided for me to go, yet they kept me hanging on for so long with the possibility that there would be five judges." At the time, it was rumoured that Arlene was axed because BBC thought she 'too old.' However, she claimed she still didn't know the reason why when she was dropped and replaced by Alesha, who had never critiqued a dance show - but was crowned Strictly champion. When reflecting on the abrupt end to her time on the show, Arlene exuded elegance, stating: "I'm a grown up so when life comes along and it doesn't go the way you want, you just get on with it." However, when quizzed about the possibility of rejoining the show, the former judge was unequivocally resolute, affirming: "They would never ask me so I would never think about it. It's not even an option."

Strictly star 'signs for Celebrity SAS' just weeks after marriage split

A Strictly Come Dancing star has signed up for Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, despite enduring a difficult few months following his split from his wife A Strictly Come Dancing heartthrob has signed up for Celebrity SAS just weeks after his shock split from his wife and his debt woes. B en Cohen, 46, might be best known as a rugby player, but he is also known for his stint on Strictly Come Dancing over a decade ago. Now, reports claim that Ben is preparing for another television appearance after signing up for Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. A source has claimed that the former rugby player has had quite a difficult few months in his personal life following the breakdown of his marriage, but is now focused on throwing himself into work. ‌ "Ben has had a difficult few months with his split from Kristina, having to sell their home and also dealing with mounting business debts," a source said. ‌ "Celeb SAS is not only a good pay day for him, but it's a new challenge to immerse himself into. Ben is obviously a sportsman and a very physical, competitive player, so if anyone can handle the SAS recruitment process, it's him," they added to The Sun. This won't be Ben's first encounter with reality television. As mentioned, in September 2013, Ben participated as a contestant in the eleventh series of Strictly. Then, in January 2016, he took part as a contestant on the third series of The Jump. He won the series in March 2016, beating Dean Cain. In 2017, he was a contestant on season 7, episode 8 of The Celebrity Chase. In January 2018, he participated in And They're Off! in aid of Sport Relief. And in December 2023, Ben took part in ITV's The Real Full Monty to raise awareness of cancer. While Ben was on Strictly, he met and fell head over heels with his professional dance partner Kristina Rihanoff. Back in March of this year, The Sun reported how Ben and Kristina's marriage came to an end. The former couple then welcomed their daughter Milena in 2016 - the same year they bought their family home - and got engaged in 2022, but they're already selling the house on. The former England rugby star, Ben, ended his marriage to Abby to start a relationship with Russian professional dancer Kristina Rihanoff after they were paired together on Strictly Come Dancing in 2013. However, friends have claimed that the couple has now split due to financial difficulties. ‌ A source claimed: "Ben left his wife, Abby, for Kristina, only to now split with her. It's like the curse in reverse. This will be like karma for Abby; she was so upset when Ben left her. It's like he has got his comeuppance." Another source claimed: "The past six months have been hell for them, and it has torn the love they had apart. For the sake of their family, they have chosen to go forward as separate individuals. Those close to them who know them as a couple had hoped they would be able to work things out, but for now it's over, and it looks like there's no going back." ‌ The problems began when the pair went into business together, with Kristina also working as a dance instructor. Kristina admitted that they had "invested everything we've ever had" into their company, Soo Yoga, turning her passion for exercise into a business. However, they ran into serious trouble when the pandemic hit. Their financial struggles were made public last September in court when Kristina was caught driving her £30,000 Audi without insurance. The ex-couple, who share an eight-year-old daughter, have put their £1.75million Northampton home up for sale and Ben has been removed as a director of their joint yoga business. The five-bedroom home in Northamptonshire has been sold for £1.75 million after being put on the market on September 19, according to the Daily Mail, years after the couple bought it for £950,000.
