Can Buying $10,000 of Nvidia Stock Still Make You a Millionaire?

Globe and Mail28-07-2025
Key Points
Nvidia would have to grow to nearly 4x last year's global GDP to turn $10,000 into $1 million.
Achieving this goal is theoretically possible, but highly improbable.
10 stocks we like better than Nvidia ›
If you had invested $10,000 in Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) on the day of its initial public offering in 1999 and never sold, you'd have a whopping $42.4 million today. Even if you had waited until 2015 to buy $10,000 of the stock and held on for the wild ride, your investment would be worth roughly $3.58 million now.
But, as the old saying goes, hindsight is 20/20. Can buying $10,000 of Nvidia stock still make you a millionaire?
Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue »
What it would take
Let's first address what it would take for a $10,000 investment in Nvidia to make you a millionaire. The math is simple: Since $1 million divided by $10,000 is 100, Nvidia would need to deliver a 100x gain.
Most stocks aren't able to produce that kind of return, even over a lifetime. However, Nvidia has done it in less than nine years.
Admittedly, it's hard to envision Nvidia doing it again. After all, the GPU maker now sports a market cap of over $4.2 trillion -- the highest valuation for any company ever. To turn $10,000 into $1 million, Nvidia's market cap would have to grow to a mind-blowing $420 trillion.
To put that figure into perspective, the U.S. GDP last year was roughly $29.2 trillion. The GDP for the entire world was around $110.5 trillion. All Nvidia would have to do to make you a millionaire with a $10,000 investment is to grow to 3.8 times the economic output of every country on the planet. Easy, peasy, right?
Potential scenarios
It's hard to envision how Nvidia could grow 100x. However, I can come up with two potential scenarios where it could at least theoretically happen.
The first scenario involves Nvidia achieving a revolutionary breakthrough that gives it a monopoly on technology that everyone wants. Maybe the company builds a teleportation device that allows people and products to be instantly transported anywhere.
Perhaps a more likely goal would be to create AI superintelligence, an artificial general intelligence (AGI) system that's smarter than any human who has ever lived. Nvidia has teamed up with partners, including Turing, who are trying to develop AGI systems. The company's GEAR group (GEAR stands for "generalist embodied agent research") is trying to build foundation models, agents, and robots that might eventually achieve AGI.
The second scenario requires time and consistently strong earnings growth. Nvidia's earnings jumped 31% year over year in the first quarter of 2025. Stock prices tend to track earnings growth over the long term. If we assume that Nvidia continues to grow by 31% for the next 17 or so years, its share price would increase by 100x. However, to deliver such stellar growth over such a long period, Nvidia might need a game-changing breakthrough mentioned in the first scenario.
Facing long odds
Is it possible that buying $10,000 of Nvidia stock right now could make you a millionaire? Sure. Is it probable? No way. The odds against Nvidia delivering a 100x gain are enormous. Of course, that's true for pretty much any other stock.
However, I suspect that Nvidia could still make investors millionaires. It'll just take more money and potentially a long time. If you want $10,000 to turn into $1 million, though, you might have to find a smaller stock with tremendous growth prospects -- in other words, another Nvidia of 10 to 20 years ago.
Should you invest $1,000 in Nvidia right now?
Before you buy stock in Nvidia, consider this:
The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Nvidia wasn't one of them. The 10 stocks that made the cut could produce monster returns in the coming years.
Consider when Netflix made this list on December 17, 2004... if you invested $1,000 at the time of our recommendation, you'd have $636,628!* Or when Nvidia made this list on April 15, 2005... if you invested $1,000 at the time of our recommendation, you'd have $1,063,471!*
Now, it's worth noting Stock Advisor's total average return is 1,041% — a market-crushing outperformance compared to 183% for the S&P 500. Don't miss out on the latest top 10 list, available when you join Stock Advisor.

NFL and ESPN reach nonbinding agreement for sale of NFL Network and other media assets

Ever since the NFL announced it was looking to sell NFL Network and other media assets, ESPN had been seen as one of the favourites to make a deal. Nearly five years later, a framework is finally in place. The NFL announced Tuesday night that it has entered into a nonbinding agreement with ESPN. Under the terms, ESPN will acquire NFL Network, NFL Fantasy and the rights to distribute the RedZone channel to cable and satellite operators and the league will get a 10 per cent equity stake in ESPN. The league and ESPN still have to negotiate a final agreement and get approval from NFL owners. The agreement will also have to undergo regulatory approvals. "Sometimes great things take a long time to get to the point where it's right. And we both feel that it is at this stage," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a call with The Associated Press. Along with the sale of NFL Network, the NFL and ESPN will have a second nonbinding agreement where the NFL will license to ESPN certain NFL content and other intellectual property that can be used by NFL Network and other assets that have been purchased. "We have been talking about it in earnest for the last few years. But interestingly enough, we started talking about this over a decade ago but nothing really ended up happening. And we got back at it when I came back to Disney after my retirement," Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a call with the AP. What ESPN gets ESPN is expected to launch its direct-to-consumer service before the end of September. The service would give cord-cutters access to all ESPN programs and networks for $29.99 US per month. The addition of more NFL programming increases the value. Many viewers will receive the service for free as part of their subscription to cable, satellite and most streaming services. "When I came back to Disney and assessed essentially the future of ESPN, it became clear that ESPN had to launch a bigger and more robust and digital or direct-to-consumer product, not only for the sake of ESPN's business, but for the sports fan," Iger said. "And obviously, when you start thinking about high-quality sports content, your eyes immediately head in the direction of the NFL because there's really nothing more valuable and more popular than that. NFL Network — which has nearly 50 million subscribers — would be owned and operated by ESPN and would be included in ESPN's direct-to-consumer product. The NFL RedZone channel would be distributed by ESPN to cable and satellite operators. However, the NFL will continue to own, operate and produce the channel as well as retain the rights to distribute the channel digitally. ESPN would also get rights to the RedZone brand, meaning RedZone channels for college football and basketball or other sports could be coming in the future. NFL Fantasy Football would merge with ESPN Fantasy Football, giving ESPN the official fantasy football game of the league. NFL Network will still air seven games per season. Four of ESPN's games, including some that are in overlapping windows on Monday nights, would move to NFL Network. ESPN will license three additional games that will be carried on NFL Network. What the NFL receives (and retains) The league gets a 10 per cent equity stake in ESPN. Aidan O'Connor, a senior vice president at the Prosek Partners marketing firm, estimates the value of that would be $2.2 billion to $2.5 billion. ESPN is currently 80 per cent owned by ABC Inc. as an indirect subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. The other 20 per cent is owned by Hearst. There isn't any word yet on whether the 10 per cent stake for the NFL would all come from ABC's stake or whether it would be 5 per cent each from ABC and Hearst. This isn't the first time the league has had an equity stake in a digital or communications business. It had that in the past with Sirius Satellite Radio and SportsLine. The NFL could also have equity in the newly formed "Paramount Skydance Corporation," which owns CBS, due to the league's partnership with Skydance. "This is new as far as a partner now operating a business that we built, ran and grew," said Hans Schroeder, the NFL's executive vice president of media distribution. "It'll also be a little bit new again with some of the dynamics here, but we'll continue to balance that in a really arm's length way where we'll think about how we manage and work across to all our partners." Gunman who killed 4 at NYC building was targeting NFL offices but took wrong elevator, mayor says The league will continue to own and operate NFL Films, NFL+, the official websites of the 32 teams, the NFL Podcast Network and the NFL FAST Channel (a free ad-supported streaming channel). "The moves align with the NFL's longstanding ambition to reach $25 billion in annual revenue by 2027 — a target first set in 2010, when league revenue stood at approximately $8.5 billion," O'Connor said. "Financially, the move also signals to investors that ESPN is doubling down on differentiation and content stickiness by offering a scarce and premium product in a crowded marketplace. Intentionally ceding equity to the NFL transforms ESPN from a media licensee into a true platform partner — with few properties rivaling the league in terms of cultural significance, appointment viewing, audience reach, and monetization efficiency." No major changes yet Viewers will likely not see any immediate impacts until next year once everything is approved. Besides ESPN, the biggest winner in this could be NFL Network, which had seen reductions in original programming the past couple years. "Total Access," the network's flagship show since its launch in 2003, ended in May 2024 amid a series of layoffs and cost-cutting moves. "Good Morning Football" also moved from New York, where it had been since its start in 2016, to Southern California last year. NFL Network moved to a broadcast facility across the street from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, in 2021. "The thing that's exciting for us is that we have put a lot into the network. I think it's been very effective for fans. We know it's in good hands," Goodell said. "They're innovative, they recognize great production and know how to produce it. They will do a fantastic job of operating the network and taking it to another level."

Small-Caps Stay Higher, Other Indexes Dwindle

Market indexes started the trading day in the green, but had shown signs of choppiness early on. President Trump mentioned adding new tariffs on semiconductor imports, which helped move markets lower across the board. Only the small-cap Russell 2000 was able to recover, and closed up +0.59%. The Dow crept lower by -0.14%, the S&P 500 -0.49% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq was understandably lower, -0.65% for the session. ISM Services Remain Above 50 — Barely A mixed day for monthly services PMI posted after the markets opened this morning: S&P final Services PM I for July gained nearly 3 full points to 55.7 from an unrevised 52.9 the prior month. ISM Services, also out for the month of July this morning, made it to 50.1% — a full percentage point below expectations, and down from the previous month's unrevised 50.8%. Services make up roughly 70% of the U.S. economy, thus growth rests heavily on their shoulders. S&P and ISM Manufacturing reports out last week showed both still below that 50-level, so coming precariously close to that range on ISM Services is seen somewhat as a sign of weakness. Big Afternoon for Q2 Earnings: AMD, SNAP, AMGN & More Advanced Micro Devices AMD posted beats on both top and bottom lines in its Q2 report after today's close. Earnings of 48 cents per share beat the Zacks consensus by a penny (though down significantly from 69 cents per share in the year-ago quarter) on $7.7 billion in revenues, which outpaced the $7.4 billion estimate and represents +32% growth year over year. Revenue guidance was brought up to $8.7 billion from $8.1 billion previously projected by analysts. CEO Lisa Su considers the GPU chipmaker well-positioned for growth in the second half of the year, and we see the better-than-expected results from Q2 in Data Center and Client revenues. Gross Margins were +43% in the quarter, but expected to balloon up to +54% in Q3. Snapchat parent Snap SNAP posted a much weaker-than-expected bottom line result this afternoon: -$0.16 per share versus expectations for +$0.01 in the Zacks consensus, but we presume these are not comparable figures. Revenues came in-line with estimates at $1.34 billion. Shares are down -15% on the news, but SNAP has a history of volatility following an earnings release. Biotech giant Amgen AMGN posted robust beats on both top and bottom lines, with earnings of $6.02 per share on $9.18 billion in revenues well ahead of the projected $5.26 per share and $8.87 billion, respectively. Full-year guidance was in-line on earnings and a tick higher on sales. Shares are giving back -1% from the +15% gains year to date. Analog RF chipmaker Skyworks Solutions SWKS shares are up +9% in late trading on solid beats on both earnings and sales, with $1.33 per share coming in ahead of the $1.24 Zacks consensus on $965 million in revenues, beyond the estimated $939.5 million. Expectations for the present quarter are for $1 billion - $1.3 billion in revenues, and the company raised its dividend yield by +1%, for good measure. SuperMicro SMCI, one of the biggest success stories on Wall Street back in early 2024, missed estimates by 3 cents per share to 41 cents, and came up -3% short on the top line to $5.76 billion. Guidance for next quarter is also down for both top and bottom lines, and shares are falling -14% in after-market trading. Only $1 to See All Zacks' Buys and Sells We're not kidding.
