Selangor to standardise no plastic bag policy across all local councils, says exco member
State Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the move was part of a three-pronged approach to systematically and comprehensively address the plastic pollution in the state.
"The amendment process is expected to be completed this year, with wider enforcement of the No Plastic Bag Day to begin early next year,' she said in her speech during the Plastic Free Campaign Series 2 2025, officiated by Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari here Sunday (July 6).
Jamaliah said the state government would forge strategic partnerships with various parties to ensure the success of the plastic-free campaign.
"For example, present with us today are various parties who play an important role in tackling plastic pollution through awareness initiatives, recycling innovations, upcycling efforts and the provision of environmentally friendly alternatives, thereby supporting a sustainable and plastic-free lifestyle,' she said.
Meanwhile, Jamaliah said the state government would continue to strengthen efforts to promote a plastic-free and environmentally friendly lifestyle through initiatives at the PBT level, as well as collaborations with schools and educational institutions in Selangor.
"Recognising that many parties in the state are actively working to reduce plastic use, the lestariselangor.com portal, which is currently being updated, will serve as a platform to bring together strategic partners and coordinate participation in the plastic-free campaign.
"Through this platform, organisers such as PBTs and schools can collaborate with non-governmental organisations, companies, social entrepreneurs and local communities, thereby encouraging the sharing of information, ideas and resources towards making a plastic-free lifestyle a daily practice among the people of Selangor,' she said.
On the campaign, Jamaliah said the programme, which was first held in Sepang in May, was carried out without the use of plastic, relying instead on environmentally friendly and reusable materials to raise participants' awareness of the importance of caring for the environment.
"We will move to the next location, Sabak Bernam, on Aug 23 with the same spirit, a determination to break free from plastic dependence, and a commitment to a cleaner environment and to fostering a plastic-free lifestyle,' she said. - Bernama

ALOR SETAR, July 13 — Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) has approved an allocation of RM1.15 million to completely repair the Kubang Pasu MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) in Jitra this year. Its chairman, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said, RM800,000 was allocated for the upgrade of equipment for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning, and that repairs would include upgrades to furniture in the academic block, waterproofing, courtyards, walkways and recreational areas as well as sports courts. 'RM180,000 is allocated for maintenance of the dormitories and student facilities, ceilings, toilets, closets, water tanks, food court and pest control as well as a UPS Server system costing RM50,000. 'Also, RM70,000 is allocated for electrical maintenance and basic amenities and RM50,000 for the maintenance of teachers' quarters,' he posted on Facebook yesterday. He said he had visited Kubang Pasu MRSM today and ensured immediate action would be taken after receiving a lot of social media comments from parents urging him to visit the junior college, as well as feedback on the lack of electricity supply and damaged facilities in the dormitories. He stressed that the junior college management should expedite the repairs for the comfort of students and teachers, adding that MARA's senior management would continue to monitor to ensure all approved projects would truly benefit the Kubang Pasu MRSM's students and staff. — Bernama

Police helicopter 9M-PHG played key role in Lahad Datu, major operations before crash
JOHOR BARU: The police AS355N helicopter bearing registration number 9M-PHG, which recently crashed in Gelang Patah, is being remembered for its extensive service in critical and humanitarian missions. Since news of its crash in Sungai Pulai during a nuclear detection training exercise last Thursday, many have recalled their experiences with the aircraft, whether flying in it or witnessing its role in various operations. Police Air Operation Force commander Datuk Noor Sham Md Jani described the 28-year-old aircraft as 'small but mighty', highlighting its key contribution during the 2013 Lahad Datu intrusion by Sulu militants in Kampung Tanduo, Sabah. Noor Sham, who has logged nearly 7,000 flight hours on the AS355N, said he flew 9M-PHG to evacuate injured General Operations Force (GOF) personnel to hospitals in Sandakan and Lahad Datu during the armed standoff. "From day one of the incident, three AS355N helicopters, including 9M-PHG, and their crews were stationed in Lahad Datu for nearly three weeks before the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) aircraft arrived," he told Bernama. The helicopter was involved in an accident at 10.15am on Thursday during the Multilateral Nuclear Security Detection Exercise (MITSATOM) 2025 at the Gelang Patah Maritime Jetty. The exercise involved Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore. The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) said the helicopter had departed from the Tanjung Kupang police station at 9.51am with five people on board, including the pilot. Noor Sham said 9M-PHG had just participated in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25) and was one of the most frequently deployed aircraft for humanitarian missions, including disaster relief, flood evacuations, as well as traffic and crime surveillance. The aircraft also supported major national operations, such as aerial surveillance during the state visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping in April and during the enforcement of the Covid-19 Movement Control Order (MCO). "Its compact size made it ideal for command-and-control tasks. "We often used it for initial reconnaissance because of its ability to manoeuvre in tight areas, before deploying larger aircraft like the AW139 if needed," he said. In Johor, 9M-PHG was used to airlift three pregnant women, aged 22 to 33, from flood-isolated Orang Asli villages in Kahang, Kluang, to the hospital. Police force currently operates five AS355N helicopters, with two of them in Sabah, one in Sarawak and two in Peninsular Malaysia, including 9M-PHG. – Bernama
