England set to face mammoth chase as Rishabh Pant helps India stretch big lead
Ben Stokes' side have earned their reputation as a fearless fourth-innings unit, but with seven wickets still to take before they even get their chance, they are likely to require a world record.

India took lunch on 177 for three, Rishabh Pant unbeaten on 41 and attacking hard as he made the most of a bad drop by Zak Crawley on 10.

The tourists held all the cards as play began, 244 in front with nine wickets in hand. England needed things to happen quickly if they were to drag themselves back into the battle and Brydon Carse did what he could to oblige.
Charging in with good rhythm he got on top of KL Rahul and Karun Nair, beating the bat and picking up a couple of edges that failed to go to hand. India had almost survived his spell but Carse got his rewards when Nair nicked an attempted cover drive to Jamie Smith.

The wicketkeeper, whose unbeaten 184 on Friday prevented England's position being even more painful, added a solid diving catch to his list of achievements and showed impressive glovework by standing up to the stumps off Chris Woakes.
Rahul was a thorn in England's side, reaching 50 and then taking the lead past 300 with a thick edge through the vacant gully area. He was beginning to look at home when Josh Tongue sent him packing in no uncertain terms, firing a quick ball through his defences and detonating middle stump.
That brought Pant to the crease and the madness quickly followed. He pulled his third delivery for four, then stepped back to his fourth and swatted Tongue back down the ground for six.

That should have been the extent of his scoring but when he backed away to leg and pumped a simple chance to mid-off, Crawley fumbled badly. It did not take long for England to start counting the cost, Pant stooping to sweep Tongue for six more over square-leg, before punishing some drag downs from Shoaib Bashir.
At one stage he swung so hard he launched his bat 20 yards into the outfield, a comedy moment he followed by offering another chance off the leading edge. Woakes sprinted in vain to reach the looping ball but could not reel it in.

LONDON (AP) — Captains Ben Stokes and Shubman Gill downplayed the tensions between their England and India teams and regarded them as a normal part of big series. Their five-match series became spiky in the third test at Lord's, where England barely won by 22 runs on Monday. India was angry with England's time-wasting tactic at the end of Saturday's play, India bowler Mohammed Siraj had an altercation with England batter Ben Duckett on Sunday, and on the final day Monday an accidental mid-pitch collision between Ravindra Jadeja and Brydon Carse flared more tempers. The incidents darkened the banter on both sides, especially between the bowlers and their victims but Stokes and Gill didn't have a problem with any of it. 'It makes for an even more exciting test series,' Gill told the BBC. 'When you're in the heat of the moment there's so many emotions involved. 'Both teams are competitive and you're playing to win. There is going to be moments where there is going to be a bit of heat.' Stokes agreed wholeheartedly. 'I think a bit of niggle out in the middle gets over-egged from people watching. A massive series, emotions are going,' he said. 'All 22 (players) are playing for their country. I don't think anyone in the India dressing room or England dressing room is going to be complaining about what was said. 'We are out there putting our bodies on the line. It was always going to happen eventually. I'm all for it. I don't think it went over the line whatsoever. It adds to the theatre.' Siraj celebrated dismissing Duckett on Sunday by yelling in his face and bumping shoulders. On Monday, he was fined 15% of his match fee by the International Cricket Council and handed one demerit point. Four demerit points in a 24-month period could lead to a suspension. Siraj has two. Siraj came to the crease on Monday to booing and was the last man out in an unlucky fashion. But while he agonized at the crease, some England players, including Joe Root, congratulated him on his effort. 'There is always admiration at the end because both teams try everything they can to win the test match,' Gill said. Teammate Washington Sundar welcomed the passion shown by both teams, and said it was natural. 'I would say the aggression is always inside of us in both dressing rooms,' Sundar said. 'It definitely does (fuel energy). I mean, it's a sport and everyone is quite aggressive and quite intense in their own ways. I mean, no matter the sport, if you're an athlete, it's a common factor, I'd say.' England batting coach Marcus Trescothick believed it will draw more eyeballs to the series. 'It's a big series,' he told the BBC. 'It's understandable at times that tempers are going to get to boiling point, and things will be said, and things happen amongst the two teams. Sheffield United sign midfielder Scofield
Sheffield United have completed the signing of midfielder Connie Scofield on a free transfer. WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Blades this evening. The 26-year-old has signed an initial one-year deal at Bramall Lane with the option of a further year. Advertisement Scofield returns to Sheffield United following a successful loan spell with the club last season. The midfielder arrived in South Yorkshire on loan from London City Lionesses in January and established herself in the Sheffield United team. Scofield left London City Lionesses earlier this summer and she will now continue her career back at Sheffield United. After adding Scofield to his squad, Sheffield United head coach Ash Thompson said 'I couldn't be more pleased to have brought Connie back to the club on a permanent basis. She had a huge impact on our team when she arrived in January and as well as being a player with top division and international experience, she's a fantastic character too. I'm equally delighted she was keen to come back here after enjoying her time in Sheffield and I'm looking forward to working with her again this season.'
