Jharkhand renames Atal Mohalla Clinics after Mother Teresa amid political backlash
A total of 21 proposals were approved in the meeting, including the introduction of a uniform framework for state universities through new legislation.
Notably, Atal Mohalla Clinics in Jharkhand are a network of primary healthcare facilities established to provide free and comprehensive healthcare services to urban slum areas.
These clinics aim to bridge the gap in healthcare access and reduce the burden on larger hospitals by offering basic medical services, including treatment for common ailments, free medicines, and basic lab tests.
According to Cabinet Secretary Vandana Dadel, these Atal Mohalla Clinics have now been renamed as Mother Teresa Advanced Health Clinics in Jharkhand.
'The Jharkhand Cabinet gave its approval to change the name of Atal Mohalla Clinic, being operated under the ongoing scheme under the State Plan, to Mother Teresa Advanced Health Clinic,' said the Cabinet Secretary.
Dadel also informed that approval was given to provide a special ex-gratia grant and government jobs, on compassionate grounds, to the family members of central paramilitary force personnel belonging to Jharkhand in case they lose their lives during a Maoist attack or while guarding the borders.

Jharkhand govt announces ex-gratia for victims of road accident in Deoghar
Deoghar (Jharkhand): The Jharkhand government has announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs 20,000 each for those injured in a tragic road accident that occurred in Mohanpur, Deoghar, on Tuesday morning. Acting on the directions of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, State Health Minister Dr Irfan Ansari rushed to Deoghar and visited the injured at the Sadar Hospital. He later reviewed the ongoing treatment arrangements and assured that all medical care -- including tests and medicines -- is being provided free of cost. The accident took place when a bus carrying Kanwariyas collided with a truck loaded with gas cylinders. Six pilgrims lost their lives and 23 others sustained injuries in the mishap. Initially, reports suggested a death toll of 18, with Godda MP Nishikant Dubey also claiming that number. However, officials later confirmed that the death toll stood at six. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha spokesperson Manoj Kumar Pandey slammed Nishikant Dubey and said this is no issue for politicisation. "The loss of workers' lives is deeply saddening and truly unfortunate. Based on the information available so far, it appears to have been an accident caused by human error -- a collision between two vehicles. While this is a tragic incident, seeing the opposition politicising such a sensitive matter is equally disheartening and surprising." The Kanwariyas were reportedly on their way to Basukinath after offering water at Baba Baidyanath Dham when the accident occurred. Seven of the critically injured have been referred to AIIMS Deoghar, where special arrangements have been made for their treatment. Chief Minister Soren has directed officials to ensure the best possible care for the injured and provide all necessary support to the affected families. Health Minister Ansari said the district administration has also been instructed to safely send all injured pilgrims back to their homes after recovery. Terming the incident 'unfortunate,' the Minister added that the government is fully alert about the safety of pilgrims visiting Baba Dham and is taking all necessary steps to prevent such accidents. Deoghar Deputy Commissioner Naman Priyash Lakra said a special committee is being formed to investigate the incident. If any lapses or negligence are found, strict action will be taken against those responsible, including officials and vehicle operators. Vehicle and driver safety checks will also be intensified in the fair area to avoid any such recurrence, he added.

Mother Teresa replaces Atal in Jharkhand scheme name, BJP calls it ‘conversion agenda'
The Hemant Soren government's decision to rename a healthcare scheme launched by the previous Bharatiya Janata Party government after Mother Teresa has kicked up a political storm, with the Opposition accusing it of 'pushing a conversion agenda'. Earlier this week, the Jharkhand Cabinet decided to rename the Atal Mohalla Clinic. Launched under the Raghubar Das-led BJP government as a tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the scheme aims at strengthening health infrastructure in urban slums and provides free primary healthcare services — including consultations, medicines, and diagnostic tests. The decision to rename it 'Mother Teresa Advance Health Clinics' was taken at Chief Minister Hemant Soren's cabinet meeting earlier in the week. The chief minister also approved 20 other key proposals at this meeting. The BJP called it an attempt to 'promote religious conversion', claiming it was part of a 'larger conspiracy'. The BJP has long been alleging there's an attempt to convert the state's tribals to Christianity. 'What contribution has Mother Teresa made to Jharkhand?' senior BJP leader and former Leader of Opposition Amar Kumar Bauri said Saturday at a media briefing in Ranchi. 'The blueprint for a separate Jharkhand was based on the BJP's Vananchal vision, which was a gift from Atal ji. Religious conversion is a serious issue in the state, and Hemant Soren is using this name change to further that agenda.' BJP's Godda MP Nishikant Dubey too raked up the name change, accusing the Soren government of 'trying to erase Vajpayee's name'. He then went on to call the government's actions 'cheap', saying that the chief minister seemed to be 'preparing to end up in jail again'. 'If the government wants to work in the name of Teresa, they can start a new initiative. Why rename a scheme named after Atal ji?' he said. 'By changing the name, the government has acted in a disgraceful manner. The current conduct of the state administration suggests that the CM of Jharkhand, who is also Congress's favourite, seems ready to go to jail once more'. Soren's Jharkhand Mukti Morcha dismissed the charges as 'politically motivated and baseless'. 'Mother Teresa may not have been awarded the Bharat Ratna, but she was honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize for dedicating her entire life to serving the poor, the oppressed, the marginalised, and the sick. Illness knows no religion, and she provided healthcare to thousands without discrimination. Her work was directly connected to health, making her name rightfully fit for such a scheme,' he said. Taking a jibe at BJP, the JMM alleged that the party had 'run out of real issues', claiming it was the 'BJP that started the trend of renaming things across the country'. 'Those holding press conferences have already been rejected by the people in elections… BJP trying to polarise votes in the name of religion and nationality, accusing people of being Bangladeshi when Jharkhand doesn't even share a border with Bangladesh,' he said.
