Cong slams govt over NMMS app, says ‘FAST means First Announce Second Think'
Taking aim at the government's approach, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh in a statement said, 'FAST is the self-declared motto of the Modi Govt. It actually stands for First Announce Second Think.'
'In May 2022, the Modi Govt introduced the National Mobile Monitoring System (NMMS) app in MGNREGA for digital verification of attendance and works. Ever since this was done, the Indian National Congress had been highlighting the operational problems with NMMS and how it was damaging the letter and spirit of MGNREGA. Now in a notification issued on July 8, the Union Ministry of Rural Development has finally acknowledged the various problems associated with the NMMS,' Ramesh said.
'It was evident from the beginning that many workers would be unfairly denied wages simply because their photographs couldn't be uploaded in real time due to network issues,' the Rajya Sabha MP said. 'At the same time, the NMMS has proven ineffective at preventing fraud. Fake workers can simply turn up twice a day to be photographed and still get paid without doing any real work,' he said.
He also highlighted the recent revelations that fake and random photos are being uploaded to the app, underscoring what he called the 'absolute uselessness' of the NMMS.
'However, the Modi government, post its acknowledgment of the issue, has identified solutions that are worse than the problem. NMMS photos will now also be backed by physical verification by officers in-charge. This proposed solution is going to waste the precious time of NREGA functionaries, from top to bottom. Either they can verify photos, as is being mandated by the latest order, or they can perform their regular duties,' Ramesh said.
Ramesh reiterated the Congress' long-standing demands for a fundamental overhaul of the current system. These demands, several of which have also been echoed by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, include: Immediate withdrawal of the unworkable and counterproductive NMMS model based on photo uploads and reaffirmation of task-based payments which is the essence of MGNREGA.
He said amid a decade-long crisis of stagnant wages, an increase in MGNREGA wages -- as envisioned in the Congress Nyay Patra for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections -- assumes renewed importance. MGNREGA wages must rise to reach Rs 400 per day
'The Aadhar Based Payment Bridge Systems (ABPS) must not be made mandatory and wages must be paid within the statutory period of 15 days and any delay in payment must be compensated,' he demanded.

Old rivals Katti, Patil join hands to counter Jarkiholi influence in Belagavi
1 2 Belagavi: In a dramatic political twist in Belagavi district, former BJP MP Ramesh Katti and senior Congress functionary AB Patil — rivals for over three decades — have set aside differences and joined hands in Hukkeri taluk. The surprise alliance is being seen as a strategic counter to the growing influence of the Jarkiholi family, especially over the key Hiranyakeshi cooperative sugar factory. Their coming together has re-energised Lingayat representatives in the region, with recent meetings at Kaneri Mutt pointing to broader plans to curb the Jarkiholi family's rising clout. Though long-standing adversaries, both Patil and Katti insisted their collaboration is "solely aimed at safeguarding cooperative institutions", especially the Hiranyakeshi factory, once a bastion of the Katti family. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru The factory, founded in 1956 by Appanagouda Patil, had been under the Kattis' control since 1995 until Jan 2025, when a faction led by BJP's Annasaheb Jolle and MLA Balachandra Jarkiholi seized control. The defection of seven board directors led to the resignation of Nikhil Katti as chairman, ending the Kattis' 30-year dominance. However, discontent with Jolle's leadership reportedly drove board members to approach Patil and Katti for help. "Hiranyakeshi isn't just a factory; it's a symbol of the cooperative movement," said AB Patil. "Initially, Rs 150 crore is required to kick-start the factory. We will arrange funds from various sources and restore it. Our goal is to crush one lakh tonnes of sugarcane in the coming season." At a joint press meet, Katti said, "I am a loyal BJP worker, while AB Patil is a loyal worker of Congress. When it comes to politics, we will follow our party directions, holding our respective party flags." The rising political clout of the Jarkiholi brothers in Belagavi, a region traditionally dominated by representatives of the Lingayat community, had triggered anxiety among senior Lingayats, prompting a closed-door strategy meeting at the influential Kaneri Mutt near the Maharashtra border. The meeting sparked intense political chatter across the district as it came ahead of the high-stakes Belagavi District Central Cooperative (BDCC) Bank elections in Oct, where Balachandra Jarkiholi is leading efforts to secure all 16 seats unopposed. However, minister Satish Jarkiholi had played down the Kaneri Mutt meeting saying "such meetings against the Jarkiholi family are not new".

After 1999 flashback, Kharge emerges as possibleCM face amid Siddaramaiah-DKS fact-off
Bengaluru: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge 's recent remarks recalling how he was denied the CM's post in 1999 despite support of the majority in the party has raised a key question: Is the veteran Dalit functionary positioning himself as a fallback Karnataka CM candidate if the current deadlock between chief minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy, DK Shivakumar , continues? The comment, seen by many as a reminder of both his past contribution and present relevance, has added a new layer to the ongoing political churn in the state. With talk of a possible mid-term CM change gaining traction and no clarity yet on a succession plan, Congress sources say Kharge could emerge as a compromise candidate acceptable to multiple factions. "Kharge has been aspiring for long to become CM," said a senior Congress functionary. "Even though he was elevated to the highest position (AICC chief) in the party, he still regrets missing out on opportunities not just in 1999 but at other times as well when Congress governed the state. Though he was eligible for the post, the entry of Ahinda leader Siddaramaiah kept him at bay." You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru Kharge's becoming CM could tick several boxes. It could fulfil a long-standing demand for a Dalit CM in Karnataka, where the Scheduled Caste population stands at 18% as per the 2011 Census. Some party strategists believe the move could also help unite factions in the state unit and send a strong political message ahead of the 2028 assembly and 2029 Lok Sabha elections. For many, it suggests a subtle signal to the party's central leadership, especially in the context of the leadership tussle between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar that appears no closer to a resolution. However, not everyone is buying the idea. "C Rajagopalachari became CM of Madras after serving as governor general, but chief ministership after being AICC president may not be desirable. However, in politics, nothing can be ruled out," said Brijesh Kalappa, senior Congress functionary. "While Kengal Hanumanthaiah became railway minister after his CM stint, Kharge has already served as railway minister. Though chief ministership has eluded Kharge so far, as AICC president, he controls the fortunes of several CMs. " Sandeep Shastri, psephologist, suggested it would be a demotion of sorts. "Kharge has gone far beyond the role [of CM] after becoming party president and leader of opposition in both Lok and Rajya Sabha," said Shastri. "What he expressed over the weekend is deep anguish at not having been able to make it to the CM post a quarter century ago. Much political water has flown under the bridge since then." Political analyst Harish Ramaswamy from North Karnataka believes such a move would be a step backward. "Given Kharge's current status, it would be unwise to look towards becoming CM," said Ramaswamy. "He should let go of the past and look to win the forthcoming Parliament elections. No doubt, Kharge is a tall leader among Scheduled Castes. However, his leadership as Congress president is much more valuable, besides being pan-India. Aiming to become Prime Minister would be more suitable than positioning himself to be CM. This will be a misguided preference, given his current disposition, both in the party and in Parliament." While Kharge has not openly staked claim to the CM post, the timing of his remarks — and the silence it has drawn from the party's top brass — has only fuelled further chatter. Whether it's a reminder of a missed opportunity or a signal of future intent, only time will tell.

Indian forces ready to face any hostile nation boldly, says Rajnath Singh
NEW DELHI: Describing the 's recent decision to appoint Pakistan as the vice chair of its counter-terrorism committee as "a cruel joke", defence minister Tuesday said the world must put strategic, diplomatic and economic pressure on Islamabad which continues to provide safe haven to terror organisations. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Initiating the debate on in RS, Singh also said the "day is not far" when the people of Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir will willingly "return home" and become a part of India. Though he did not name China, which actively helped Pakistan during the May 7-10 cross-border hostilities with even "live" satellite inputs on Indian military deployments, Singh said, "We know which country was doing what during Operation Sindoor." "Not only Pakistan, but every country that looks at India with ill-intent should understand that today, our armed forces have the strength & capability to deal with any Op Sindoor, we have also sent a message to the powers that were encouraging Pakistan," he added. While repeating most of what he said in Lok Sabha on Monday, including that Operation Sindoor had been only paused for now after achieving politico-military objectives, Singh made special mention of UNSC's decision to make Pakistan vice chair of the counter-terror panel, calling it "very unfortunate" and a "mockery" of the global fight against terrorism. "This panel was formed after 9/11. And we all know who carried out 9/11 attacks. It is also no secret Pakistan harboured the mastermind (Osama bin Laden) of that attack. This is like asking a cat to guard the milk. This decision is not only shocking but also reflects the seriousness of an organisation like UN on the issue of ," he said. Pakistan is a country where declared terrorists like Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar roam freely and spew venom, and Army officers offer prayers at funerals of terrorists. "Now, the same Pakistan is expected to lead the global community against terrorism. Is this anything less than a cruel joke?" Singh added.
