After 1999 flashback, Kharge emerges as possibleCM face amid Siddaramaiah-DKS fact-off

Time of India6 days ago
Bengaluru: Congress president Mallikarjun
Kharge
's recent remarks recalling how he was denied the CM's post in 1999 despite support of the majority in the party has raised a key question: Is the veteran Dalit functionary positioning himself as a fallback Karnataka CM candidate if the current deadlock between chief minister
Siddaramaiah
and his deputy,
DK Shivakumar
, continues?
The comment, seen by many as a reminder of both his past contribution and present relevance, has added a new layer to the ongoing political churn in the state.
With talk of a possible mid-term CM change gaining traction and no clarity yet on a succession plan, Congress sources say Kharge could emerge as a compromise candidate acceptable to multiple factions.
"Kharge has been aspiring for long to become CM," said a senior Congress functionary. "Even though he was elevated to the highest position (AICC chief) in the party, he still regrets missing out on opportunities not just in 1999 but at other times as well when Congress governed the state.
Though he was eligible for the post, the entry of Ahinda leader Siddaramaiah kept him at bay."

Kharge's becoming CM could tick several boxes. It could fulfil a long-standing demand for a Dalit CM in Karnataka, where the Scheduled Caste population stands at 18% as per the 2011 Census. Some party strategists believe the move could also help unite factions in the state unit and send a strong political message ahead of the 2028 assembly and 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Political observers suggest Kharge's public expression of regret is more than just an emotional outpouring. For many, it suggests a subtle signal to the party's central leadership, especially in the context of the leadership tussle between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar that appears no closer to a resolution.
However, not everyone is buying the idea. "C Rajagopalachari became CM of Madras after serving as governor general, but chief ministership after being AICC president may not be desirable.
However, in politics, nothing can be ruled out," said Brijesh Kalappa, senior Congress functionary. "While Kengal Hanumanthaiah became railway minister after his CM stint, Kharge has already served as railway minister. Though chief ministership has eluded Kharge so far, as AICC president, he controls the fortunes of several CMs.
"
Sandeep Shastri, psephologist, suggested it would be a demotion of sorts. "Kharge has gone far beyond the role [of CM] after becoming party president and leader of opposition in both Lok and Rajya Sabha," said Shastri.
"What he expressed over the weekend is deep anguish at not having been able to make it to the CM post a quarter century ago. Much political water has flown under the bridge since then."
Political analyst Harish Ramaswamy from North Karnataka believes such a move would be a step backward.
"Given Kharge's current status, it would be unwise to look towards becoming CM," said Ramaswamy. "He should let go of the past and look to win the forthcoming Parliament elections.
No doubt, Kharge is a tall leader among Scheduled Castes. However, his leadership as Congress president is much more valuable, besides being pan-India. Aiming to become Prime Minister would be more suitable than positioning himself to be CM.
This will be a misguided preference, given his current disposition, both in the party and in Parliament."
While Kharge has not openly staked claim to the CM post, the timing of his remarks — and the silence it has drawn from the party's top brass — has only fuelled further chatter. Whether it's a reminder of a missed opportunity or a signal of future intent, only time will tell.

Article 370 abrogation a defining moment in J&K's history: BJP spokesperson

On eve of sixth anniversary of abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, BJP said that it's revocation brought progress and development in J&K. Congress, meanwhile, will hold protests at different places in J&K on Tuesday. BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur (File) On August 5, the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir marks the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A. On August 5, 2019, Indian Parliament revoked Article 370 and bifurcated J&K into two UTs. BJP J&K spokesperson Altaf Thakur said that August 5, 2019, will be remembered as a defining moment that ended decades of uncertainty and paved the way for peace, prosperity, and equal rights in the region. 'Prior to the abrogation, J&K remained trapped in a vicious cycle of hartals, stone pelting, and terrorism. Shops remained shut for days, schools were forced to close, and normal life was frequently disrupted due to the fear spread by separatists and terrorist sympathizers. But after August 5, 2019, that chapter has closed for good,' he said, adding that incidents of stone pelting have come down to zero and local recruitment of youth into terrorist ranks has almost stopped. 'This shift is proof that the youth of J&K have chosen books over bullets and laptops over stones,' he said. Thakur said the last six years have witnessed unprecedented development across all regions of J&K. 'Whether it's the construction of roads in far-flung areas, expansion of health and education infrastructure, return of tourism, or rising investor interest—J&K is on a new path of progress,' he said. Meanwhile J&K Congress is planning to declare August 5 as black day and has been running a protest campaign for restoration of J&K's statehood. J&K Congress president Tariq Hameed Karra had asked political leaders of all the parties to join their protest on August 5.

Cong all set to wage war with BC quota bill ammo in Delhi

Hyderabad: A special train carrying over 1,200 Congress workers and leaders from Cherlapally station departed for New Delhi on Monday. They would be joined by hundreds of other partymen from the State to participate in a protest led by CM A Revanth Reddy on August 6, demanding Presidential assent for the BC reservation bills passed by the State Legislature. Speaking to media persons before boarding the train PCC president B Mahesh Kumar Goud said that as part of multi pronged strategy the LoPs in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge will be move special adjournment motion in the houses on August 5, to demand a debate on the BC quota bills. The next day, as part of building pressure on the Centre, over 2,000 leaders including Ministers from Telangana, led by the Chief Minister will stage a dharna demonstration at Jantar Mantar. On August 7, a delegation of leaders led by CM would be meeting President Droupadi Murmu. PCC chief alleged that Union Minister G Kishan Reddy and other BJP leaders were trying to obstruct the 42 per cent quota to BCs by citing inclusion of Muslims. 'Modi himself boasted about his endorsement for reservation to Muslims in Gujarat. Even UP and also neighbouring AP have this provision. Only when it comes to Telangana, objections are being raised,' he said. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge will also seek an audience with the President. Among those who boarded the train include AICC State in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan. I'm part of Padyatra as a party worker: Meenakshi Natarajan Trying to clear the air over 'ideal gossip', the AICC incharge said that the 'Janahitha padayatra' was not her own campaign, but being led by PCC president. Meenakshi Natarajan clarified to the media that the ongoing padayatra whose first phase was completed was inspired by Rahul Gandhi. 'Rahul Gandhi has shown us the path as to how to reach out to the people. We are taking forward this idea and the PCC president has given a call for this yatra,' she explained. The AICC incharge further said that PCC president and Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has taken a historic step of 'social justice' towards getting 42% BC reservation and the Congress leaders do not have time to respond to gossip. 'I am privileged to take part in this (padayatra), as a party worker. Each padayatra gives me an opportunity to introspect myself. I don't have time to respond to ideal gossip, as there is a lot of work in wake of this historic step,' she added.

Congress enacting political drama over BC reservations: BJP chief

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP President N. Ramchander Rao accused the Congress party of staging a political drama over the issue of Backward Classes (BC) reservations. He alleged that the Congress was deliberately misleading the public by taking the matter to Delhi, taking out a Rail Yatra, and organizing a protest at Jantar Mantar. On Monday, Rao questioned the rationale behind the Congress's agitation, pointing out that it was the same party that had made the Kamareddy Declaration promising 42% reservations for BCs. He noted that the BJP had unconditionally supported the bill in the State Assembly and asked why the Congress was now creating unnecessary commotion. 'This drama in Delhi shows that the Congress has no intention of implementing BC reservations in the upcoming local body elections,' he said. He expressed concern over the lack of transparency regarding the ordinance, stating, 'The State government had issued an ordinance, and we don't know what was in it.' A copy was sent to the State Governor. Rao further criticized the state government's decision, reportedly marking a copy of the ordinance to the President of India, calling it unprecedented and unconstitutional. 'Ordinance approval is the prerogative of the Governor. Sending it to the President raises serious questions. Does it happen anywhere in the country that any state government makes a copy of its ordinance to the President of India, he asked. Rao also alleged that the Congress was attempting to introduce 10% Muslim reservations within the 42% BC quota, thereby attempting to harm the original BC reservations. He said that the BJP has raised this issue. However, the State government has no answer to it, nor has it given any explanation on the same. 'Congress has done too much and caused enough damage to the country,' and asserted that the people of Telangana would see through the Congress' 'game plan' and 'gimmicks,' which he claimed would not be taken seriously by the public.
