Social engineering: Congress to opt for OBC/Dalit UP chief

NEW DELHI: Taking a leaf out of Bihar, the Congress is considering a leadership change in Uttar Pradesh and appointing a president from the Dalit or Other Backwards Class (OBC) community to revive its fortunes in the most crucial state. The party expects the move to align with its 'social justice' pitch as part of its strategy for the 2027 assembly elections, according to sources. However, the change may happen after the Bihar elections later this year.
According to insiders, the names being discussed include Tanuj Punia, a Lok Sabha member from Barabanki, and Virendra Chaudhary, a sitting MLA from Maharajganj.
Tanuj Punia is the son of PL Punia, the bureaucrat-turned-Dalit face of the party in the state, while Chaudhary belongs to the OBC community. By appointing a Dalit leader at the helm, the party believes it can consolidate the Dalit vote bank, which constitutes nearly 21.1 percent of the electorate.
A leader told this paper that the party is buoyed by its impressive performance in the 2024 elections and thinks now is an opportune time to woo Dalit and OBC votes. 'This will help the party reach out to the deprived sections of society, with Rahul Gandhi's twin planks of 'save the Constitution' and the demand for a nationwide caste survey,' said a leader.
A section believes that since the Dalit vote bank is drifting away from Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), the party can capitalise on her eroding vote base and declining influence in Dalit politics.

Shivakumar neither in hurry nor under pressure for CM post, says his brother Suresh

Former Lok Sabha member D K Suresh on Saturday clarified that his brother and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar is neither in a hurry nor under pressure regarding the CM post . He made the remarks against the backdrop of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah 's recent assertion that he would complete his full five-year tenure. "D K Shivakumar is neither in a hurry (to become CM) nor under any pressure," Suresh told reporters here. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo Earlier, it had been speculated that Shivakumar, who is also the Congress state president and considered a key contender for the top post in the state, would take over the chief minister's role midway in the present regime. Responding to queries, Suresh said, "There is no conflict in the Congress party . The high command, the chief minister and Shivakumar have already clarified the matter. Siddaramaiah has said he will continue in leadership. Yet we don't know why there is confusion in the media." Live Events He added that Shivakumar is sincerely carrying out the responsibilities given to him and working in accordance with the party's direction. "At present, the chief minister's post is not vacant. We don't know why this issue is being discussed repeatedly," Suresh said. He added that Shivakumar is a loyal party worker who respects the Congress high command. There was stiff competition between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar for the chief minister's post after the declaration of Assembly election results in May 2023, and the Congress had managed to convince the latter and made him the Deputy CM. There were some reports at the time that a compromise had been reached based on a " rotational chief minister formula " according to which Shivakumar will become CM after two-and-half years, but they have not been officially confirmed by the party.

'100%': Siddaramaiah Will Complete 5 Years As CM, Says Karnataka Minister Ramalinga Reddy

Reddy also told News18 that the Congress high command should crack down on leaders who speak to the media about the perceived power tussle in the party's state unit Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah will complete a full five-year term on the post, his cabinet colleague Ramalinga Reddy told News18 in an exclusive interview on Saturday. The state transport minister also asserted that the Congress government was stable and would retain power in the next assembly elections. Reddy advocated that the Congress high command should crack down on leaders who speak to the media about the perceived power tussle in the party's state unit. Edited excerpts: What is the status of the bike taxi issue? Commuters are confused. Will the ban on bike taxis be lifted? The matter is in court. I won't comment. That is his personal opinion. Take, for example, the Kantharaju report (the previous caste census)—there were many differences of opinion among ministers. Bengaluru's population is 1.4 crore. About 43 lakh people travel by our buses, around 8 lakh use the Metro, another 4 lakh use taxis, and 3 lakh use autos. We have a well-connected bus network everywhere. If you had used our bus today, you wouldn't have been late. Shakti was the first guarantee launched. But today, it is putting pressure on the state exchequer, and there are also reports of unpaid salaries. We started Shakti in June, and so far, 500 crore commuters have used the service since its launch in June 2023. The government's expenditure is around Rs 12,000 crore. We are paying salaries on the first of every month and have also recruited 10,000 new employees. Transport corporations have incurred losses, and there have been delays in paying salaries. We are paying salaries regularly. During the BJP government, they used to pay salaries once in two months. They didn't recruit a single employee. We have recruited 10,000 people, brought in 5,000 new buses, and more are expected to join the fleet. The BJP had cancelled 3,800 buses. It is the Congress that resumed the process. Compared to other corporations, we are doing 100% better. Before Shakti, the number of daily travellers was 80 to 85 lakh. Now it has reached 1.05 crore. Maharashtra has allowed e-bike taxis. Is your objection to the concept of bike taxis itself? You cannot compare with other states. Karnataka has 25,000 buses, and Maharashtra has 26,000. Rajasthan, UP, and other states don't even have 10,000 buses. The matter is in court—I won't comment. Is the auto union pushing for this? I won't comment. Will there be a change in the CM by December? CM Siddaramaiah visited Delhi two or three days ago. After his visit, he expressed that he will continue for five years. I will not make any further comments. As a minister, do you have confidence that Siddaramaiah will complete five years as CM? Our Congress government will complete five years, and another five years as well. When the CM has expressed that he will continue for five years, it's like a message from Delhi, I believe (from the high command). What about the morale of the party? The constant tussle is affecting the image of the government. Be it leaders or MLAs, they should not be speaking to the media about CM change, KPCC chief change, or having three deputy CMs. They should not speak like this—it will affect the party in future elections. What about leaders who continue to speak out? The high command should take strict action against them. Both the CM and deputy CM should ask everyone to refrain from speaking to the media. If they have anything to say, let them say it within four walls. In the interest of the party and the government, what they are doing is wrong. There are reports that there is no money in the government. Funds for the guarantees are being released only once in two or three months. Every week, the CM and deputy CM visit districts and inaugurate various projects. If there were no money, how would that be possible? We have sufficient funds. BJP and JD(S) are misleading the public. When Bommai left office, the state's debt was more than Rs 1 lakh crore. The BJP took over Rs 2.4 lakh crore in loans from banks. The current situation is due to the BJP's mismanagement. Is the government stable? 100 per cent stable. We will complete five years and return in the next elections too. Under whose leadership? Under the leadership of Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar. Mallikarjun Kharge is there, and so are Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. As Muzrai Minister as well, the Temple Bill proposes that 10 per cent of earnings from temples earning between Rs 50 lakh and Rs 1 crore be given to the government. It is awaiting Presidential assent. This is in the interest of C-grade temples, temple priests, and their families. There are about 40,000 priests. The bill is currently with the President. Let's see what happens. It is being said that this is also being done to fund the guarantee schemes. We cannot transfer even one rupee from one temple to another. The BJP is misleading the public through social media. Will the full five-year term be completed under chief minister Siddaramaiah? 100 per cent. Under his leadership? Yes. ‘Be cautious against…': CM Yogi says efforts being made to divide Hindus, Sikhs

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday asked people to stay wary of those trying to cause rift between Hindus and Sikhs. He claimed that efforts are being made to cause friction between the two communities and added that people need to stay vigilant against such attempts. During the ceremony, UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath honored the Sikh gurus and hailed them for their sacrifice. (@CMOfficeUP X) "Remember that many people will try to create divisions between Hindus and Sikhs … There is a conspiracy among us to divide us and weaken us. Who will save us from this? We will have to be cautious,' he said during his address at the launch ceremony of UP-Delhi Balidan Sandesh Yatra, being held to mark the 350th martyrdom day of Guru Teg Bahadur. During the ceremony, the chief minister also honored the Sikh gurus and hailed them for their sacrifices. "Circumstances have changed. Their objective is the same as it was at that time. Yes, they have changed their way of working. And this event is inspiring all of us for the purpose for which the Sikh Gurus had sacrificed their lives," he said. What Yogi Adityanath said about Chhangur Baba Yogi Adityanath's remarks come days after the Uttar Pradesh anti-terror squad arrested Chhangur Baba, accused of being the 'mastermind' of a religious conversion racket. While talking about the arrest, Yogi Adityanath said that Chhangur Baba had fixed rates for converting Hindu and Sikh communities and that transactions of a whopping ₹100 crore have been found in his 40 accounts so far. Also read: Conversion racket kingpin Chhangur Baba taken to Balrampur, grilled for hours "You must have seen what kind of conspiracy is going on. We have recently taken a big action in Balrampur. You must have seen that he had fixed the rates. That is, how to take forward the programme of conversion. He had fixed the rates for converting Hindus, Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Sikhs, other OBC castes, Scheduled Castes and (Scheduled) Tribes. Money was coming in from abroad. Just think, transactions worth more than ₹100 crore have been received in his 40 accounts so far," the chief minister said. He added that a team has been dispatched to conduct 'ghar wapsi' (converting to original faith) of those who were converted by the racket. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also stepped into the ongoing investigation against Chhangur Baba and the preliminary findings point to a foreign funding of about ₹106 crore, mainly from the Middle East and illegal assets across states. Initial inputs by the ED indicate that Baba and his associates controlled around 40 bank accounts, allegedly used to receive hawala transactions and funds from Middle Eastern countries.
