Drone disaster? Famed U.S. Army faces backlash as equipment fails in hot weather and heavy rain

Time of India03-06-2025

Drone operations by the
U.S. Army
are running into problems that aren't caused by enemy fire. The harsh tropical weather in the Pacific is what is keeping important equipment from working. While working together with the Philippines, American troops are rushing to make technology work in bad weather.
Why are U.S. Army drones failing in the Pacific?
According to a top officer, the US Army's drone arsenal is facing some difficulties due to the hot and humid weather in the Western Pacific, as per a report by Business Insider.
The Army and its Philippine counterparts are currently training for what a war in the Indo-Pacific might entail in the Philippines as part of the Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center-Exportable exercise. It's all part of getting ready for future wars in the Indo-Pacific.

Army Maj. Gen. Marcus Evans, the commander of the 25th Infantry Division based in Hawaii, claimed that the heat and regional weather patterns are the main problems with drone operations in this region, BI reported.
Live Events
In the Philippines, extreme heat (up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit) affects drone performance, specifically battery life, limiting the range and duration of drone flights. Battery technology is similarly affected by cold climates, such as Alaska's Arctic tundra.
Certain UAVs' ability to take off and land vertically can occasionally be impacted by wind and rain. Southeast Asia is experiencing the monsoon season, which means there is constant humidity and a lot of rain. They've observed a decrease in their flying endurance and distance, stated Evans.
According to him, his soldiers must become "accustomed to the endurance levels of the unmanned aerial systems" in this area "so that they can integrate those into tactical plans."
What solutions are troops testing in real time?
US soldiers have been working on immediate solutions, such as swarming drones, flying more drones, or locating new drone launch sites. While launching multiple drones or swarming them reduces the reliance on a single drone for mission execution, different regions may experience varying weather and temperatures. For these capabilities, this type of adaptive work is taking place throughout the division, not just in a single brigade or formation.
The 25th Infantry Brigade was only utilizing small drones, which have a range of roughly three to five kilometers depending on the situation, during a training in Hawaii last fall.
What role does the Army's 'Transformation in Contact' program play?
The learn-in-the-moment strategy aligns with the Army's Transformation in Contact program, which expedites soldiers' integration, testing, and improvement of new weapons before incorporating the input into operational planning. 3D printing for first-person view drones is one more recent addition to the ongoing training.
Drone warfare and other technologies can be learned from the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. In particular, Philippine soldiers can learn a lot about fighting in the Pacific.
FAQs
What is causing the US Army's drone issues in the Pacific?
Extreme heat, humidity, and monsoon rains are reducing drone range and efficiency.
How are soldiers dealing with these technical failures?
They are flying multiple drones, adjusting launch zones, and even 3D printing parts to ensure mission readiness.

Watch: Powerful tornadoes hit Minnesota; storms topple trees, flood streets

Screen grab from X @konstructivizm Powerful storms swept through central and southern Minnesota over the weekend, and residents captured dramatic videos of tornadoes touching down in several areas. The severe weather began Saturday evening and lasted into early Sunday, triggering multiple tornado warnings, including in the western and southern Twin Cities metro. Video captured shows the intensity of the storms, with swirling funnels, dark skies, and debris being tossed by strong winds. The severe weather caused significant power outages. Early Sunday, Xcel Energy and other utility companies reported more than 50,000 customers without power, mostly in the western Twin Cities metro. The national weather service confirmed several tornado touchdowns, including one near Victoria just before 12.30 am. Officials reported downed trees blocking State Highway 7 near Rolling Acres Road and Minnewashta Parkway. About 10 minutes earlier, a trained weather spotter saw a tornado on the ground near Hydes Lake, northeast of Norwood Young America. Despite the intensity of the storms, no injuries were reported. The system weakened and moved out of the Twin Cities area by 2 am. The storms also brought tornado reports in eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota, with sightings near Canby, Marietta, and Danvers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo In addition, weather spotters and law enforcement confirmed downed trees in St Michael, Renville, and areas south of Murdock. Heavy rain led to flash flood warnings and street flooding, especially in Buffalo and Rockford around midnight, according to MPR News. Rivers across Minnesota have risen above flood stage due to the recent storms and are expected to rise further in the coming days.

Digital India: PM Modi hails 10 years of initiative; says it's now a ‘people's movement'

File photo: PM Modi (Picture credit: PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday marked ten years of the Digital India initiative with a detailed reflection on its transformative journey, calling it a movement that has empowered 140 crore Indians and elevated India to global digital leadership. In an article shared on LinkedIn, the PM wrote, 'While decades were spent doubting the ability of Indians to use technology, we changed this approach and trusted the ability of Indians to use technology.' Launched in 2015, Digital India was aimed at democratising access to technology and governance. Reflecting on its scale and success, the PM wrote, 'From how we govern, to how we learn, transact, and build, Digital India is everywhere.' PM Modi underlined that internet connections in India have jumped from 25 crore in 2014 to over 97 crore today. Over 42 lakh kilometres of Optical Fibre Cable, equivalent to 11 times the Earth-Moon distance, now links even the remotest villages. He highlighted that India's 5G rollout is among the fastest globally, reaching forward military zones such as Galwan and Siachen. As per a recent PIB release, nearly 6.92 lakh km of optical fibre has been laid under BharatNet , covering over 2.18 lakh Gram Panchayats. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? The PM also cited key digital platforms that have become global models — from UPI , now handling over 100 billion transactions annually, to Direct Benefit Transfers worth ₹44 lakh crore that have cut leakages and middlemen. As per official figures, DBT has saved the government over ₹3.48 lakh crore by removing fake beneficiaries. 'Schemes like SVAMITVA have issued 2.4 crore+ property cards and mapped 6.47 lakh villages, ending years of land-related uncertainty,' he noted. Calling India's digital economy a force for inclusion, the PM spotlighted ONDC and GeM as tools that have empowered MSMEs, artisans, and women-led enterprises. 'ONDC recently crossed 200 million transactions… GeM has crossed ₹1 lakh crore GMV in just 50 days,' he said. He added that platforms like CoWIN, DigiLocker and FASTag have made India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) a model for the world. Through India's G20 Presidency, the country launched a global DPI repository and a $25 million fund to help other nations adopt inclusive tech systems. According to the PIB, India's digital economy contributed 11.74per cent to GDP in 2022–23 and is expected to rise to 13.42per cent by 2024–25, with projections placing its share near 20per cent by 2030. On the startup front, the PM wrote that India now ranks among the world's top three ecosystems, supported by initiatives like the $1.2 billion IndiaAI Mission. As of May 2025, India had over 34,000 GPUs, the largest affordable compute access in the world. 'Digital India has not remained a mere government programme; it has become a people's movement,' PM Modi concluded. 'Let us build what empowers. Let us lead with technology that unites, includes, and uplifts', he wrote.

Flossie becomes a hurricane off Mexico's Pacific coast after rapidly strengthening

(Image credit: AP) MEXICO: Flossie has strengthened into a hurricane off Mexico's southwestern Pacific coast. The US National Hurricane Center in Miami said Flossie became a Category 1 hurricane Monday night and has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph). The hurricane center said Flossie was moving west-northwest off the Mexican coast and was about 175 miles (280 kilometers) south of Manzanillo. Flossie was expected to skirt the coast for a few days while dropping rain on several Mexican states. Tropical storm Flossie continued to gain steam off Mexico's southwestern Pacific coast on Monday afternoon and was projected to turn into a hurricane overnight. Meanwhile, the remnants of what was tropical storm barry dumped rain on eastern Mexico. Flossie strengthened with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph). It was centered about 170 miles (270 kilometers) southwest of Zihuatanejo and was moving northwest at 12 mph. Mexico's government issued a tropical storm warning along the southwestern coast from Punta San Telmo to Playa Perula. A tropical storm watch remained in effect for the southwest coast from Zihuatanejo to Cabo Corrientes. A watch means tropical storm conditions are possible in the area within two days. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like เทรด CFDs ด้วยเทคโนโลยีเทรดสุดล้ำ และ รวดเร็วกว่า IC Markets สมัคร Undo Flossie is expected to rapidly intensify into a hurricane late Monday or early Tuesday, then skirt the coast for a few days. While its center is forecast to remain offshore, moderate rain was likely in parts of Oaxaca, Guerrero, Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco through early next week. Meanwhile, the remnants of Barry were bringing heavy rain to Mexico's Gulf coast after it came ashore as a tropical depression south of Tampico with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
