Why Did Scientists Officially Change the Magnetic North?
This new model updates the location of magnetic north while also providing improved navigation for technologies reliant on Earth's magnetic field.
Updated every five years, scientists have confirmed that the previous model was pretty accurate, but sometimes emergency updates are necessary.
The importance of the world's magnetic field is difficult to understate. On the one hand, this magnetic shield is responsible for life forming on Earth in the first place, as it protects the surface from most of the Sun's harmful UV rays. In a less existential way, the magnetic field is also vital for navigation—just get lost in the backcountry with only a compass to guide you, and you'll quickly understand its importance.
However, the Earth's magnetic north is constantly influenced by the planets roiling iron core, which produces the entire magnetic field. As a result, magnetic north is always changing, and since its discovery in 1831, it has moved roughly 680 miles toward Siberia from its originally documented location. Its speed can also change drastically—from 1999 to 2005, for example, magnetic north shifted from moving only nine miles in a year to 37 miles. However, in the past five years, magnetic north has decelerated from moving 31 miles per year to just 22 miles. It's a pretty chaotic system.
To keep accurate tabs on this ever-changing magnetic north, scientists developed the World Magnetic Model (WMM). Updated every five years, this spherical harmonic model allows navigational systems reliant on Earth's magnetic field to continue operating correctly. The WMM is the standard model used by the U.S., the U.K., and several international organizations, such as NATO. In mid-December of last year, the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) and the British Geological Survey (BGS) released a new version of this model with improved accuracy and better predictions of the next five years of magnetic north behavior.
'The real challenge is, and the reason why we release a model every five years, it doesn't change in a regular way,' William Brown, a geophysicist from BGS who helped create the new model, told Live Science. 'It's not completely predictable. It's a really complicated, chaotic system. Typically, about five years is when the accuracy of the model starts to get to the point where it's not as good as we would like it. So we make a better prediction with five years more information to work from, and just update the prediction going forward.'
These updates will happen in the background on navigational systems from airlines to smartphones, and this new model will likely keep these services up and running without error—emphasis on likely. Because of the unpredictability driven by the planet's geomagnetism, sometimes scientists will release an emergency update to the WMM. In 2019, for example, changes to magnetic north had exceeded the threshold for accurate navigation, so an update was issued (which was only noticeable to those traveling close to the Arctic).
As for the 2020 update, scientists confirmed—by analyzing magnetic north's position—that the previous model was pretty accurate. 'The forecast was very good […]. And so the new model confirmed that we were not very far off,' Arnaud Chulliat, a research scientist from UC-Boulder told CNN.
Scientists (hopefully) won't check back in on magnetic north's true placement until the tail end of 2029.

The killer speedboats designed to defend Britain's coastline
Credit: Kraken Technology As they zoomed around the Baltic Sea last month, a pair of British drones provided a glimpse of how navies are adapting to a new age of warfare. The K3 Scout unmanned surface vessels (USVs), made by Kraken Technology, were deployed alongside other maritime robots as part of an exercise conducted by NATO's Task Force X. With a top speed of 55 knots, the autonomous boats can be sent on reconnaissance missions hundreds of miles away, dispatched laden with troops and cargo, or loaded up with explosives for kamikaze missions. They can also carry powerful sensors and fire tube-launched loitering munitions, known as suicide drones. In the future, dozens of these relatively low-cost devices – each about 27 feet long – could be unleashed to create a high-tech 'picket fence' around the British Isles. This would allow the Royal Navy to rapidly intercept smugglers, enemy ships or investigate suspicious activity without having to dispatch crewed vessels. 'Once you've detected an object of interest, either above or below the surface, you can shadow them for some time,' says Mark Exeter, Kraken's operations chief. 'It has the speed and performance to keep up with anything or intercept it. You can't shake us off.' The drones highlight the lessons Britain and its allies are learning from the war in Ukraine, where low-cost drones are being used to destroy far more expensive platforms. Yet it also represents a change in tack for Kraken's founder, who was still focused on high-performance powerboat racing as recently as five years ago. From powerboats to firepower Portsmouth-based entrepreneur Malcolm Crease decided to pivot towards defence during the pandemic, after getting several approaches from industry. Interest was originally spurred by the advent of low-earth satellites, which opened up the possibility of controlling drones remotely, but took on fresh urgency as operations in Ukraine demonstrated a need for speed in drone operations. In the Black Sea, Kyiv's forces have put swarms of explosive-laden USVs to devastating effect against the Russian navy, causing so much havoc that Moscow's fleet has effectively been confined to port. They have even been armed with missiles and used to shoot down aircraft, including a Russian Mi-8 helicopter and a Su-30 fighter jet, according to reports. But according to Crease, there is another, far more important reason that companies like Kraken are suddenly in vogue: 'The ability to rapidly iterate and think on our feet is our greatest strength. 'We didn't have to go through months and years of development. We were able to accelerate through that very rapidly – we think like a race team. 'When we started out there was confusion about our background – people would say, 'But you're the racing guys, what do you know about defence?' 'Now, four years down the track, it's a real credibility statement for us. People like that pedigree because they understand why we are able to do what we can do. 'When you start getting out into open water and high sea states and temperatures and wind chill factors and everything else, it's a very, very different, difficult environment to operate in. 'But it's sort of our backyard – it's what we used to do for fun in a racing context. So it's in our DNA.' Small and agile alternative His firm is just one of several British engineering companies turning their hands to defence as Western governments scramble to re-arm. In the UK, ministers have said they want more of these 'small, often family-owned, firms to bring their innovations, their agility and their expert workforce' to the fore, offering a nimbler alternative to the industry's slower-moving defence giants, such as BAE Systems, Babcock and Rolls-Royce. The Strategic Defence Review, published in June, also called for the development of 'dual use' technologies that can be used for both civilian and military purposes, making the defence industry more resilient to supply chain shocks. And though small businesses are unlikely to build multibillion-pound fighter jets or submarines, there is currently an insatiable appetite for what is known in military jargon as 'mass'. These cheap weapons range from largely disposable first-person view drones to more sophisticated platforms such as Kraken's K3 Scout, which are considered 'attritable' rather than indispensable. Yet all tend to have one thing in common: they are easily produced at scale and fast. For example, while the European consortium that makes Typhoon fighter jets can currently muster 20 to 30 jets per year at a push, Kraken will soon expand its operations to make 1,000 Scout drones annually. The company has secured a contract with the Ministry of Defence and has also just secured backing from NATO's investment fund and an unnamed country in the alliance. Another business that has entered the military space is Oxfordshire-based MGI, which was founded by ex-Formula 1 engineer Mike Gascoyne in 2003. Originally, the company provided design consultancy services, but it has since expanded to manufacture unmanned aerial and maritime vehicles, as well as an ultra-cheap missile. This month, MGI demonstrated its SkyShark drone at its airfield near the village of Enstone. It can be sent on intelligence missions, loaded up with munitions or used for one-way kamikaze strikes, at a fraction of the price of a traditional cruise missile. Crucially, it also relies on an all-British supply chain, including gas turbine engines made by fellow Oxfordshire firm Argive or a silent, electric fan engine made by London-based Greejets. His company has also secured contracts with the Ministry of Defence, which he says he cannot discuss. 'Traditionally, defence projects take years to develop, but the essence of Formula 1 is you've got to develop rapidly and move really quickly,' adds Gascoyne. 'You make a new car every year, and every two weeks, somewhere around the world, you're racing a different version of it, constantly updating to stay in the game and remain competitive. 'Now, the military has realised what they need as well.' Start-up struggles Still, while the success enjoyed by the likes of MGI and Kraken so far is promising, many executives say there is still a long way to go to make the defence industry more welcoming to start-ups. It is still common for smaller companies to struggle to obtain bank accounts owing to controversial environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing rules. Many businesses also struggle to stay afloat while they wait months and often years for the Ministry of Defence to award contracts. This limbo period has been dubbed the 'valley of death' by the industry. 'British industrial creativity is second to none,' says Labour's Fred Thomas, a former Royal Marines commando who is now MP for Plymouth Moor View and a member of the defence committee. 'We have the best engineers, designers and thinkers in the world. 'Applying these advantages to defence innovation is vital for our country's security. It's on the Government to incorporate these capabilities into the national arsenal.' Ministers have vowed to improve the situation by requiring officials to award contracts far more quickly. They have also established the new UK Defence Innovation organisation, which has been given a ring-fenced budget of £400m per year and a mandate to seek out innovation. With luck, it should mean that more companies like Kraken can contribute to Britain's defences. 'We've done this in a slightly unconventional way, but we're now being taken very seriously,' Crease adds. 'We're anticipating explosive growth.' Russian Nuclear Sabotage In Space Could Decimate Western Satellites

As the Kremlin ramps up its secret, subversive attacks on the Western powers aiding besieged Ukraine, its century-long expertise in sabotage—starting with Soviet insurrectionists Lenin and Stalin—could next be directed to upend the realm of low Earth orbit, says Elena Grossfeld, an expert on Russia's space and nuclear arms programs at King's College London. While Moscow presses forward with its top-secret project, discovered by American intelligence agencies, to deploy nuclear-tipped anti-satellite missiles in orbit, the detonation of a fission bomb hundreds of kilometers above the Earth would undoubtedly trigger a rapid response by NATO, Grossfeld tells me in an interview. An Accidental Nuclear Explosion In Space Provides 'Plausible Deniability' Less obviously confrontational would be the 'accidental' explosion of a nuclear-powered spacecraft, which could likewise take out a sizable swath of Allied satellites while shielding Moscow in a cloud of 'plausible deniability,' she says. The Russian space agency Roscosmos has already launched a satellite—likely a defense prototype on a precursor mission—sent into orbit near the edge of the high-radiation rings of the Van Allen belt, she says. Sabotaging this orbital zone by remotely triggering the explosion of a nuclear-propelled craft would pump up the belt's radiation levels and in turn destroy or damage a cascade of nearby satellites. The 'Beauty' of Sabotage - in the Eyes of the Kremlin The 'beauty' of this type of sabotage operation, she says, is that it could never be absolutely proven to have been an intentional Russian attack on American and European spacecraft, which could forestall a collective NATO response. Sabotage is a central component of the Kremlin's statecraft, and random acts of subversion—believed to be orchestrated by Moscow—have proliferated across Europe since Russian tanks and missiles began pummeling Ukraine three years ago. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said during a summit of the alliance's foreign ministers that Russia has 'tried to destabilize our countries and divide our societies with acts of sabotage.' NATO Leaders Seek Collective Response to Russian Acts of Sabotage Ministers representing the 32 NATO nations, Rutte said, have 'agreed a set of measures to counter Russia's hostile and cyber activities, including enhanced intelligence exchange, more exercises, better protection of critical infrastructure.' Moscow's spiraling campaign of sabotage, he added, reflected 'the escalating dangers of the ongoing war in Ukraine.' The Kremlin's steady stream of threats to use its nuclear weapons arsenal—the world's largest—against any NATO nation directly intervening to help Ukraine repel Russia's invasion forces signals that it already views the West as an enemy, Grossfeld says. Leveling the Battlefield Before Space War I To level the battlefield before an anticipated Space War I, she predicts, Russia might opt to stage a devastating pre-emptive sabotage strike, via the self-destruction of its nuclear-powered craft. The intensified charged particles whizzing through orbit— triggered by the Kremlin's space kamikaze mission—might take out thousands of American satellites, she predicts, while potentially sparking indecision across the West on whether to treat this maneuver as the orbital version of a Pearl Harbor attack. (Photo by) While warning it could commence firing anti-satellite missiles against any Western spacecraft aiding Ukraine, Grossfeld tells me, 'Russia has been investing in multiple launch methods' for its fleets of ASATs. Yet a booby-trapped nuclear-fueled spacecraft, she adds, would be a far more powerful weapon. Moscow's stepped-up embrace of sabotage is part of Putin's overarching goal of restoring Russia to its position as a Soviet superpower, when it ruled over a far greater realm. Just as Russia has declined in its military might since the break-up of the Soviet Union a generation ago, Grossfeld says, its status as one of the globe's foremost space powers has likewise slipped away. Russia Arming for Space War I with the Western Allies Russia has already amply signaled it is arming for Space War I with the Western Allies, Grossfeld points out. Even before Kremlin troops began storming Ukraine's borders, before their missiles were launched to engulf Ukraine's cities and cathedrals in flames, their commanders led a secret mission they hoped would ensure a speedy victory in a lightning war. Russia's First Attack on an American Satellite System Moscow's military intelligence leadership carried out a surprise ambush in the first battle of this space war by targeting the ground terminals of the U.S. satellite constellation that Ukraine's defense ministry relied on to command air force pilots, navy captains and soldiers across the nation. This cyber-attack swiftly crashed thousands of Viasat transceivers, and cut off communication lifelines linking Ukraine's democratic rulers with their armed guardians, and with their allies across Europe and the globe. The United Kingdom's foreign secretary lashed out at 'Russian Military Intelligence' for staging the assault on the American satellite operator, and on Ukraine, and threatened the Kremlin would face 'severe repercussions.' Yet since then, Grossfeld says, sanctions imposed on Russia have failed to deter Putin's expansionist ambitions and dreams of a renewed Soviet empire, or his escalating acts of sabotage aimed at destroying the willpower of the West and its backing for Ukraine. 'Despite multiple sabotage operations in Europe,' she adds, 'no actions have been taken by either the U.S. or NATO against Russia.' That could inspire Putin to extend his clandestine campaigns of subversion into the heavens, she predicts, even as he gains ground in his terrestrial war against Ukraine.

NATO fund backs biotech startup in push to counter biological threats
By Supantha Mukherjee STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -The NATO Innovation Fund has made its first investment in a biotechnology company, it said on Monday, seeking to enhance defences against biological threats The fund is co-leading a $35 million fundraising round for Portal Biotech, which uses protein sequencing to detect engineered threats and defend against biological warfare. UK-based Portal Biotech's capability is essential for biosecurity defence and security, said Ana Bernardo-Gancedo, senior associate at NATO Innovation Fund. "We believe that it is absolutely imperative that we are able to detect, monitor and create countermeasures," she said. The fund, created in 2022 after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, plans to invest more than $1 billion in technologies that would enhance NATO's defences. Portal Biotech uses an AI-backed technology with biological sensors that can work at the single molecule level on-site, giving results within hours. "It's for everything from measuring diseases to better pandemic prevention ... you can take this out of large labs with long turnaround times and into the field," CEO Andy Heron told Reuters. Heron said the company's instruments can detect any pathogen and can be used for continuous monitoring of anything from a field to water supply. "It allows you not just to detect what you did know was out there, but it allows you to detect what you didn't know," he said. Beyond biosecurity, Portal Biotech expects its portable equipment to aid in drug discovery and precision medicine.
