The agitation, coinciding with Maharashtra Agriculture Day, aims to bring highway traffic to a standstill in Wardha, Yavatmal, Hingoli, Nanded, Parbhani, Beed, Latur, Dharashiv, Solapur, Sangli, Kolhapur, and Sindhudurg.
The protest stems from the state cabinet's recent approval of a substantial Rs20,787 crore to fast-track the Maharashtra Shaktipeeth Highway (High Speed Expressway) project.
This project seeks to connect Pawanar (Wardha district) in eastern Maharashtra to Patra Devi (Sindhudurg district) on the Maharashtra-Goa border.
Highway authorities have already started land mapping and surveys for acquisition, reportedly under police protection, which has fuelled opposition from farmers. This swift action, despite farmer objections, has directly led to the call for the highway blockade.
Farmers' leader and former MP Raju Shetti has issued a stern warning to political representatives and sugar mill owners in Kolhapur and Sangli districts.
He urged them to publicly clarify their position on the Shaktipeeth Highway, stating that "time will not forgive them" if they fail to do so.
Shetti, while speaking to the reporters on Monday, said, "If you are true, then you don't have to fear the govt. This highway is being created only to make a scam worth Rs50,000 crore. The people's representatives of Kolhapur and Sangli districts, and especially the sugar millers, should clarify their stance against Shaktipeeth; otherwise, time will not forgive them."

In Kolhapur district, the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway will be blocked at the Panchaganga Bridge in Shiroli. In Sangli district, the protest will be held at Ankali Phata on the Nagpur-Ratnagiri National Highway.
Meanwhile, the police department has planned traffic diversions to avoid inconvenience to the commuters due to the protest.
Inspector Nandkumar More of the city traffic branch, while talking to TOI, said, "All vehicles moving towards Pune from Kagal side will be diverted from Ujlaiwadi bridge and will proceed via Shahu Toll Naka, Tararani Chowk, SP Office Chowk, Kasba Bawda, Shiye Phata, and then towards Pune."
He added, "The same road will be used for vehicles arriving from Pune to move towards Kagal and Karnataka side. The traffic diversions will be in place from Tuesday 8am until the protest ends."

India achieves 4000% growth in solar capacity; Calls for self-reliance in energy storage through R&D: Piyush Goyal

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, while addressing the 11th India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2025 noted the 4,000% increase in Indias installed solar capacity and stated that the countrys renewable energy capacity now stands at a robust 227 GW. He said India is likely the first G20 nation to have met its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. Highlighting India's manufacturing progress in the last decade, Goyal said that the countrys solar photovoltaic module capacity has increased nearly 38-fold, while photovoltaic cell capacity has risen 21-fold. Congratulating India Energy Alliance and partners for curating IESW, Goyal appreciated their efforts in bringing together clean energy, storage technologies, green hydrogen, and e-mobility solutions under one platform. He emphasised that India is on a focused path to becoming energy sufficient, with the aim of having renewable energy sources power the countrys growing needs round the clock. The Minister underscored the importance of storage technologieswhether in the form of batteries, pumped storage, hydro storage, or geothermalas essential for meeting Indias future energy demands. He highlighted that the energy sector will be a driving force in India's transition to clean and renewable sources of power, and this vision has already been reflected in the countrys achievements over the last decade. The Minister emphasised that various forms of energy storage, such as pump storage and battery systems, as well as nuclear power, will support the clean energy transition. He also underlined the critical role that stakeholders will play in this mission. Proposing a comprehensive four-pronged approach for advancing Indias energy independence, Union Minister emphasised the need for targeted innovation, infrastructure development, supply chain resilience, and holistic value chain growth. He stated that India must lead in research and development for energy storage by focusing on next-generation battery chemistries, solid-state and hybrid storage technologies, and circular supply chains.

New tax law shields most seniors from Social Security taxes—but not how you think

A new $6,000 tax deduction (or $12,000 for married couples) is the real reason most seniors won't pay taxes on Social Security benefits under Donald Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill'. Available through 2028 to those 65+ earning ≤$75,000 individually or ≤$150,000 jointly, this deduction lowers taxable income so much that for 88% of seniors, up from 64%, their benefits effectively become tax-free. But the law doesn't eliminate Social Security taxes directly; it just makes them disappear for many through this backdoor method. The biggest winners are middle-income seniors. Those earning $50,000–$200,000 could see taxes on benefits reduced or erased because the deduction lowers their 'combined income' used to calculate taxes. However: Low-income seniors already paying $0, gain nothing Under-65 beneficiaries (e.g., disability recipients) are ineligible High earners above $175,000 (single) or $250,000 (couples) get no break The Tax Foundation confirms this helps 'lower-middle and middle-income taxpayers most." The SSA emailed millions claiming the law 'eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits', calling it 'historic relief for seniors'. Experts slammed this as misleading and politically charged for a typically neutral agency. Former SSA officials noted emails like this blur trust in government communications and risk confusing vulnerable seniors . While the White House stands by its '88%' claim, tax analysts stress the deduction only indirectly affects benefit taxes, according to recent reports. Though senior citizens save money now, the program faces accelerated financial risk. The $30 billion/year revenue loss from fewer taxed benefits could drain Social Security's trust fund by late 2032, a year earlier than projected. Since taxes on benefits fund Social Security and Medicare, this 'relief' deepens the program's $22.4 trillion funding gap.
