#SHOWBIZ: Edika Yusof, Nor Hidayah divorced with single talak

KUALA LUMPUR: The 20-year marriage between actor Edika Yusof and Nor Hidayah Yusri ended today with a single pronouncement of talak (divorce) at the Federal Territory Syariah Lower Court here, at 10.42am.
Edika, whose full name is Mohd Yusof Abd Majid, 58, recited the pronouncement before Syariah Judge Syed Muhammad Syahadi Syed Siksh.
"I agree to release the plaintiff (Nor Hidayah)," Edika confirmed when questioned by the judge at the start of the proceedings.
The judge accepted the pronouncement and formally dissolved the marriage under Section 47 of the Islamic Family Law (Federal Territories) Act 1984.
When asked if he had any final words for his now former wife, Edika replied in the negative.
Nor Hidayah, 47, in her final statement, tearfully appealed for Edika's understanding.
"As a wife, I have always acknowledged the good he has done, and my decisions are based on the law. I know I could have endured until the end, but legal considerations have led me to this decision. I hope he (Edika) understands," she said.
Following this, Edika and Nor Hidayah shook hands before the formal pronouncement of the divorce.
On March 24, Nor Hidayah's lawyer, Mohd Yazid Hazim of Messrs Yazid Azuhan & Associates, confirmed that she had filed for divorce in mid-February.
According to Yazid, the court set today's date for the divorce after an earlier postponement due to Nor Hidayah's then-current state.
Yazid also stated that Nor Hidayah's divorce application cited 10 grounds, which he declined to disclose in detail, citing privacy concerns.
Edika and Nor Hidayah were married in 2003 and have two children: Fardeen Nasrulhaq, 21, and Fereena Nurulhaq, 20.
The couple previously garnered public attention for Edika's dedication in caring for Nor Hidayah, who was partially paralysed after the birth of their second child.

Cheapskate or rebel with a cause – toll dodger in Beemer has opinions divided

PENNY-PINCHING foolishness or a case of rebelling against the highway operators? A video shared by the Malay Mail (@malaymail) on X showed a brazen and successful attempt at avoiding paying toll. A blue BMW is captured on dash cam video of tailgating a car just to avoid paying the highway tax. Did the driver of the blue BMW run out of credit on his TnG (Touch 'n Go) card or misplaced his wallet? Or was it a deliberate act of defiance? Premium car, but skipped the toll 💸. A dashcam caught this driver sneaking through by tailgating another vehicle at the toll. — Malay Mail (@malaymail) July 15, 2025 Opinions were divided over the antics of this extremely frugal driver. Some commenters were inclined to label the toll dodger as nothing but a cheapskate. One lamented the mentality of such entitled road users who wanted free use of facilities. The premium marque had sucked up all the funds, cried a few, obviously poking fun at the drivers' misplaced priorities – cash for luxury vehicle but not toll. One claimed that he would slow down on purpose so that the tailgating offender got a bump from the beam to teach the toll dodger a lesson. However, a few saw it as a rallying cry of defiance against highway concessionaires. Some commenters blamed weak enforcement of the law for encouraging such behaviour. Stiffer penalties including heavier fines (from the current RM300 or even a penalty of 10 times the existing toll amount) and even time behind bars would be a good deterrent. Suffice to say, many believed the offender should just be named and shamed with the number plate fully exposed (instead of purportedly blurred). At the end of the day, this is breaking the law. At the moment, failing to pay highway tolls can result in fines and, potentially, a criminal offence. Currently, toll evaders can be fined between RM2,000 and RM5,000 upon conviction under the Federal Roads (Private Management) Act 1984. A new law is proposed to make toll evasion a criminal offense as part of the multi-lane free flow (MLFF) system implementation. Such toll dodgers will need to be prosecuted and made an example of if any future barrier-free plan is to work. In the meantime, let's hope this BMW driver is enjoying his 15 minutes of infamy. – July 17, 2025

Putra Heights gas explosion: DOSH confirms pipe met technical specs

SHAH ALAM — The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) has confirmed that the gas pipe involved in the Putra Heights inferno last April met all the required technical specifications. DOSH Petroleum Safety Division director Husdin Che Amat said that, on the contrary, laboratory analysis revealed that the lower part of the pipe was not fully supported by the soil, which was found soft and damp, thus putting pressure on the surface of the pipe. He said that the weakened soil condition had caused repeated cyclic loading, resulting in stress lines and fatigue striations on the pipe's surface. 'This resulted in physical failure in the pipe at the scene, causing a gas leak that ignited (and led to the explosion). 'Metallographic analysis also showed that tensile overload was the main cause of the failure and that this damage developed slowly until it caused a ductile failure which released gas and sparked a fire,' he told a special press conference to announce the investigation report on the incident here today. Also present were Selangor Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan. Elaborating, Husdin said DOSH, in collaboration with the Department of Minerals and Geoscience (JMG), Public Works Department (JKR), Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), had conducted a comprehensive investigation into the incident over nearly three months. During that period, he said five samples were collected and sent to SIRIM, a premier standard and industrial research organisation, for laboratory testing, which began on April 15 and concluded on May 8. He explained that the investigation methodology included on-site inspections, laboratory analysis, systems review, computer simulations, and hypothesis validation, which took into consideration pipeline operations, structural integrity, material conditions, and external stress factors. 'Based on findings from all agencies involved, we identified three critical elements: the pipeline fracture occurred at a welded joint due to tensile stress, the soil beneath was soft and loose, and there was significant cyclic loading prior to the failure and subsequent fire. 'In conclusion, the pipeline failure was caused by unstable soil conditions that were insufficient to support the weight and pressure of the pipe. This led to instability, leakage, and eventually, an explosion,' he said. Husdin said the investigation was conducted under the Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act 2022 and the Petroleum (Safety Measures) Act 1984. He also confirmed that no elements of sabotage or negligence were found. As a preventive measure, DOSH has directed Petronas to identify and review all high-risk segments along its 2,680-kilometre gas pipeline stretching from Jerteh, Terengganu, to Singapore. 'Petronas has already identified these areas and has been instructed to carry out immediate remedial work along the affected segments,' he added, declining to disclose the exact locations for security reasons. — BERNAMA

Misleading public on Anwar's pardon ‘inappropriate', AGC tells Dr M

Anwar Ibrahim in May 2018 after he was released from jail on a royal pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V, through the Federal Territories Pardons Board. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has reminded former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad that he attended the Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB) meeting that decided that Anwar Ibrahim should be granted a royal pardon. In a video, which has gone viral, Mahathir claimed that the royal pardon granted to Anwar in May 2018 was invalid as it was not discussed by the FTPB. In response, the AGC today said the FTPB met at Istana Negara on May 16, 2018. The meeting was chaired by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V, it added. '(The meeting) was attended, among others, by Mahathir himself in his capacity as the prime minister at the time,' said the AGC. Screenshots from a video in which Dr Mahathir Mohamad claimed that Anwar Ibrahim's royal pardon in May 2018 was invalid as it was not discussed by the Federal Territories Pardons Board. 'Based on the board's advice, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong consented to grant a full royal pardon to Anwar, which took immediate effect from the date of the meeting. 'Any public statements that can mislead the public regarding the FTPB's decisions are wholly inappropriate.' The AGC also said it took a serious view of the matter as it concerned constitutional and institutional integrity. Anwar, who is now the prime minister, received a full royal pardon a week after Pakatan Harapan won power in the 2018 general election. He was freed after serving three years of his five-year jail term on a sodomy conviction. The FTPB is chaired by the king and includes the attorney-general, the federal territories minister and three others appointed by the king.
