Fact Check: No evidence Musk invested $5M to build affordable housing for low-income families

In late March 2025, a rumor spread online that Elon Musk, the tech billionaire and adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump, had invested $5 million to build affordable housing for low-income families.
The story circulated weeks after The Associated Press reported that Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative had halted a $1 billion affordable housing program as part of cuts and freezes at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
One example of the claim, a March 27 Facebook post (archived), had around 37,000 reactions and 11,200 comments, many of which suggested the commenters believed the story was true. The text of that post read:

Additional instances of the rumor appeared in other (archived) popular Facebook posts (archived) that, in the bodies of the posts or in comments, contained links to different websites hosting an article that claimed to share additional details about Musk's alleged investment.
Snopes readers searched our site and wrote in looking for information about the claim.
In short, there was no demonstrable evidence that Musk had invested $5 million to build affordable housing for low-income families. As a result, we've rated this claim false.
First, although the article some posts linked to claimed that Musk had "recently announced a $5 million investment to build affordable housing for low-income families," a Google search for the terms "Elon Musk," "$5 million," "low income" and "housing" found no coverage of such an announcement — which would have made headlines if it were true — in legitimate news outlets. Musk's official X account also showed no evidence that he had invested in low-income housing.
Furthermore, the article about the investment, which appeared on content-farm websites with generic names, was likely the product of artificial intelligence (AI) software. The AI text detectors GPTZero and ZeroGPT both found with high confidence that the text of the article was AI-generated.
The article included an image of Musk and a house with text reading, "$10,000 HOUSE." That image was the thumbnail of a YouTube video about Musk that misleadingly spliced together real footage of tiny houses from the modular home company Boxabl.
Musk has said that he owns a $50,000 version of the company's Casita house — which at the time of this writing cost between $60,000 and $70,000 according to the company's website — and that he uses it to host visitors. It was not immediately clear how much, if anything, Musk has invested in the company, although Boxabl has touted Musk's ownership of one of its products on its website and in multiple Securities and Exchange Commission filings.
Regardless of Musk's level of involvement in the company, there was no evidence Boxabl had built homes specifically for low-income families. Instead, as Business Insider reported in 2023, the company's highest-profile projects have been a Department of Defense contract to build Casitas at the Guantánamo Bay detention center and a deal to construct worker housing at an Arizona copper mine.
The claim about Musk investing in housing for low-income families was one of several positive — but fictional and seemingly AI-generated — stories about the billionaire that we investigated in early 2025, including a rumor that he paid the medical bills of a 7-year-old with a rare neurological disorder and also arranged for an experimental device produced by his company Neuralink to be implanted in the child's brain.

Google adds separate work and personal accounts to Chrome on iOS
Google has introduced new features for Chrome on iOS that help users bifurcate work and personal data by using separate Google accounts. As more employers implement bring your own device (BYOD) policies, employees increasingly access company resources from browsers on their personal devices. Devices connected to a managed Google Workspace are able to leverage these additions. Chrome now supports easy account switching and data separation on iOS, similar to its approach on Android and Chrome for desktop . The browser keeps data such as tabs, history and passwords confined to the corresponding account, protecting employer information from exposure to personal activities. When users first sign or select their managed account, they will be taken through an onboarding process that explains the separation between managed accounts and personal, as well as insights into how their company is handling their data. Anytime a user switches to the managed account, they are notified that they are entering a managed experience. Google has also added safeguards for companies using Chrome Enterprise. IT teams can now apply URL filtering to work accounts in Chrome on iOS, and security teams can stream audit logs from iOS and Android directly into the Admin console or any SIEM, both of which are features already available on desktop. These features are available for managed devices through Chrome Enterprise today.

Google Pixel 10 renders just leaked — and I'm digging the bold colors
Now that the next Made by Google event is official, it's only a matter of time before we get our first official look at the new Pixel 10 lineup. I've always given Google credit for giving people variety, and based on these latest Pixel 10 renders that have now leaked, it looks like it's going to be more of the same with the next model. Android Headlines shared a new batch of renders purportedly of the Pixel 10, which appears to be flaunting bolder looking paint jobs than in previous years. Don't get me wrong, the current options for the Pixel 9 look great, but it appears that Google's going after a more striking look with the amount of saturation it's adding for the Pixel 10. Just as before, it appears that there will be a total of four colors: Obsidian, Indigo, Frost, and Limoncello. There's nothing out of the ordinary with Obsidian, since it's been what the company has offered for the past several years — but it looks like Porcelain is being dropped for this year. Instead, Frost appears to be replacing it, brininging a slightly cooler color temperature than Porcelain. I really like Indigo, not only because it's a lighter shade than the blue shadow option for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, but because it's been ages since I've seen a shade of blue from Google. In fact, you'll have to go back to the original Pixel from 2016 when a Really Blue option was available. It reminds me of the Galaxy S25's navy option, but Indigo is much more saturated in tone. And finally, there's Limoncello that's a stark contrast to the wintergreen paint job of the current Pixel 9. Again, it's much brighter in tone than previous shades of green — making it pop the most out of all the other colors. However, I'm a little bummed that Peony is being dropped and that it doesn't appear to have a replacement color with the Pixel 10. These new leaked renders also give us additional details that I'm excited about, like how there are three cameras on the back of the standard model instead of the usual two. Rumors hint that Google's giving the standard Pixel 10 series a dedicated 11MP telephoto camera, which would be a first for the series. This would complement the 50MP main and 13MP ultrawide cameras the Pixel 10 is also tipped to come with, adding even more utility to its package than its predecessors. In terms of the overall design, the Pixel 10 doesn't look to be a huge departure from the current mdoels — with the same rounded corners and physical keys on the right side. I'm stoked by these color options because they're brighter and bolder than before, while also giving consumers a bit of variety. The only thing I'm concerned about at this point is the Pixel 10's price, since Google has given us wo consecutive years of price hikes for its flagships.
