Fans of the podcast "Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce" recently discovered another 'uniquely Philly' passion of Kelce's: water ice.
'WTF is water ice? Are we talking about snow cones?' asked YouTube viewer @treysullivan9248. Kelce, like any true Philadelphian, aggressively but understandably, clarified: 'No, Trey! We are not talking about snow cones!'

Kelce — media personality, podcast host, and wife of retired Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce — went on to say that water ice is a Philadelphia summer staple that's basically frozen sugar water. "You can't go wrong with it,' she said. What is Philly-style water ice?

Most similar to a fresh fruit slushie, water ice has been Philadelphia's favorite summer treat for generations. Each spring, as the weather starts to warm up and hint at summer, we celebrate with our favorite seasonal treat.
Moms line up with their kids at their favorite water ice stands. Excited children study the freezer full of colorful tubs. One asks, "Can I have strawberry on the bottom and mango on top?' T​​he teenager behind the counter happily obliges, filling the bottom half of the ​​plastic cup with an icy strawberry mixture and topping it off with another pale-yellow scoop.

While Philadelphians have been enjoying water ice for generations, the consumption of ice and fruit combinations goes back a couple of thousand years to ancient Sicily (and can be traced even further back to Asia, Persia, and Mesopotamia).
To beat the summer heat, according to food historian Liz Williams, ancient Sicilians devised creative means to both refresh and delight. Long before the invention of coolers and refrigeration, the people of Sicily were ingeniously experimenting with ice. Runners were sent up the almost 11,000-foot Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano, to collect snow and ice that could be combined with lemons, limes, and other fresh fruits to create a cool and refreshing summer treat.
Over the years, Sicilians mastered a method of storing the ice in caverns beneath the volcano before transporting it to other parts of Italy. As they did so, the practice of mixing ice and fruit, known as granita, spread throughout Italy. Different regions developed their own versions of the fruit and ice combination, as well as sorbets and gelato.
Fast forward some 2,000 years to the early 1900s, at the peak of Italian immigration to the United States. Approximately 2 million Italians immigrated here at that time, the majority coming from Southern Italy with hopes of escaping the intense poverty back home.

Men and women looked for creative ways — like peddling granita — to make money while establishing themselves and seeking employment. Just as the different regions of Italy developed different versions of granita over the years, American cities with high concentrations of Italians, especially Sicilians, began developing their versions. How do you serve Philadelphia water ice?
Traditional water ice (pronounced "wooder ice" with the local accent) is made with three simple ingredients: fresh fruit, sugar and water. While it was once made by hand, today the ingredients are combined in a metal, cylindrical machine. A mixer inside the metal barrel rotates and scrapes the edges as the mixture begins to freeze and stick to the walls. After reaching the correct consistency, the water ice is transferred into tubs and served up fresh. Where is Philadelphia water ice made?

As water ice has grown in popularity, new stands and mass-produced water ice franchises have popped up. Kids especially love Rita's Water Ice, a chain now available in over 30 states. Two of Philadelphia's most beloved water ice stands are John's Water Ice and Pop's Homemade Water Ice.
John Cardullo, founder of John's Water Ice, owned a diner in the heart of South Philly's Italian Market neighborhood and often served water ice as a dessert. In 1945, as the water ice grew in popularity, he decided to close the diner, turn it into office space for his heating repair company, and open a simple water ice stand next door.

The two seasonal businesses provided Cardullo with steady income in both winter and summer. John's Water Ice still operates out of this original location on Christian Street, with a second location in Huntingdon Valley.
Filippo Italiano of Pop's Homemade Water Ice sold his homemade Italian water ice from a cart he pushed around the neighborhood. As word of his refreshing treat spread, children and families began lining up outside his garage waiting for him to open.
Since he lived across the street from an urban park, Italiano realized he was well-known enough to quit lugging his heavy cart around in the heat and let people come to him instead. In 1932, he converted his garage into a storefront. Decades later, his grandchildren still serve water ice out of this same location.

If you're visiting Philadelphia, head over to one of the mom-and-pop stands where you know you'll be met with the tastiest and most authentic Philadelphia water ice experience. Just be prepared, as many are cash only.
John's is easily walkable from the Liberty Bell and Center City, while Pop's is located right off the Broad Street Line subway, a perfect place to stop before or after a Phillies game.

Vimeo originally pivoted away from being a direct YouTube competitor in 2017, several years before it dropped support for its apps. Since then the company has styled itself as more of a enterprise service, providing a way for businesses and professional creatives to host and sell videos, and even build their own streaming services. Spinning up a new TV app doesn't necessarily mean Vimeo is changing strategies, but if you've got some student films hanging out in an old Vimeo account, you now have a much easier way to watch them at home.

NFL star Jason Kelce isn't looking to kick back and put his feet up at home now that he's officially retired as a professional athlete—in fact, he's desperate for his wife, Kylie, to force him into doing more chores around their shared abode. Jason, 37, who spent 13 years playing for the Philadelphia Eagles before retiring from the NFL in 2024, opened up about what his life has been like since he stopped playing—namely, how he's been trying to help out more at the Pennsylvania home he shares with Kylie and their four children. However, the former athlete was quick to admit that, despite his desire to lend a helping hand, he does require a bit of tough love when it comes to motivating him to do his chores. 'I think that what I respond to really well is nagging,' he joked on his podcast, 'New Heights,' which he hosts alongside his brother, Travis Kelce. 'Please nag the f–k outta me. Tell me to get my lazy ass up and take the goddamn trash out. If you tell me to take the trash out, I'm not gonna be like, 'Oh, I can't believe she's telling me to take the trash out.' I'm gonna be like, 'Yeah, you're right.' 'I like the nagging, and I need it because I get caught in my own thoughts and I forget to do things.' Yet he faces an uphill battle in his mission to turn Kylie into a successful nagger, confessing that she's not readily willing to take on that role. 'She's like, 'Jason, I don't wanna tell you to do these things,'' he said. 'And I'm like, 'I get that, but it's not gonna get done unless you tell me to do it.' I am pro-nagging. I think nagging is a great thing to do. 'If you have a spouse that is against nagging of things that he should be doing, you probably got a s—ty husband. He's the issue here, not you telling him to do his f—ing job.' But while Jason requires a bit of nagging in order to do his part in the home, he insisted that he would 'never' ask his wife to lift a finger as far as chores are concerned, noting that she 'does enough' around the house without him adding to her responsibilities. 'I have never, ever—and I will never, ever—tell Kylie to do something around the house,' he said. 'She does enough.' Indeed, Kylie revealed back in December, before giving birth to her fourth daughter, Finnley, that she takes on the lion's share of the childcare in their home—admitting that if she has another commitment, she won't call on Jason to watch their kids but hires professional help instead. 'When I have to do something—coaching, something for Eagles Autism Foundation, something for the podcast, a doctor's appointment, even—I will schedule childcare,' she said during an episode of her own podcast, 'Not Gonna Lie.' However, she went on to insist that this wasn't because she doesn't trust Jason's ability to look after their kids, but rather because she's trying to avoid piling another job onto his already-full plate. 'My husband could tell me 72 times that he is going to be in the house during the times that I have to leave it—I will still schedule childcare. And it is not a knock on my husband, my husband is busier than he has ever been. 'I see him less now in retirement than I did when he was playing football. We had a set schedule then. Now, it is an absolute free-for-all.' Luckily, both Kylie and Jason are able to do a bulk of their work at their $6 million estate—where they record their respective podcasts. And they may soon have even more space in which to do so after Jason submitted plans to the local zoning board in Haverford Township for a fourth dwelling to be built on their sprawling property. Jason and Kylie, who married in 2018, have amassed quite an impressive portfolio of real estate in the upscale Philadelphia suburb of Haverford. Within five years, the duo picked up three adjacent properties to create one giant compound, with reports suggesting that the former NFL star plans to raze the existing structures and build a 'luxury mansion' at the center of the 10-acre estate he has created. He bought the first of the three homes—a four-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom property—for the relatively low sum of $680,000 in 2018. The property came with a three-car garage, a greenhouse, and a custom outdoor pool with waterfalls and a hot tub. A finished basement, complete with a fireplace, shows the familiar background where Jason records his podcast. In 2020, Jason bought an adjoining 8-acre property for $3.96 million, then added a third in 2023 for $1.35 million. However, according to comments he made during a planning meeting in March, he is actually hoping to construct another separate abode—as well as a large security fence that will run around the entirety of the property. Jason cited his family's 'unique' security requirements while making his case to local authorities and expressing his desire to remain in the local neighborhood. 'We want to be in this area, we like this area a lot,' he said, according to local news network WGAL. 'Obviously, things for my family are quite unique with the security purposes. We'd like to just deter a little bit of the foot traffic coming in and out of the home.' Jason added that his plans—which also included the removal of several slopes on the land—were drawn up to ensure that any changes, including the addition of a fence, will adhere to the 'aesthetic of the area.' 'We were trying to put a fence that sufficiently [deters foot traffic], but also appeals to the aesthetic of the area and that people would appreciate,' he said. The couple's portfolio also extends to Philadelphia native Kylie's beloved Jersey Shore. In 2023, they purchased a $2.2 million beachfront property in Sea Isle City, which features wraparound decks, skylights, and gorgeous views of Ludlam Beach. A recent social media trend that spun out of a 2022 Kendrick Lamar song has taken on a new meaning. In recent weeks, a viral trend known as 'I Grieve Different' has taken hold across platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. The phrase comes from Kendrick Lamar's 2022 song United in Grief , where the artist explores personal loss and emotional pain. But on social media, it's taken on a life of its own, in some ways far removed from its original meaning. Young people are using the phrase 'I Grieve Different' to share stylized videos about body issues, loss, personal trauma, mental health struggles, or future concerns. These clips usually feature moody music, dramatic captions, and the message that their way of grieving is unique or misunderstood. While some posts are sincere, others blur the line between genuine emotional expression and being performative. For those who are still figuring out how to process these emotions, participating in or consuming these videos can reinforce the idea that grief is something to be aestheticized for attention or social validation. How This Trend Impacts Teens A registered dietitian recently took to TikTok to express concern over how teen girls are using this trend to subtly showcase disordered eating behaviors. She says she's seen five or six videos of young girls saying things like: 'I'm so healthy,' 'I eat very clean,' and 'I exercise everyday.' 'And then the 'I grieve different' part is them saying things like: 'I don't have a period,' 'I have extremely low bone density,' 'I have to get iron transfusions,' and 'my hair is falling out,'' she calls out. Experts like Monique Bellefleur, LMHC, warn that although the 'I Grieve Different' TikTok trend can seem like it allows people to be candid about the darker sides of self-growth or accomplishment, these disclosures are framed in a 'funny,' easily digestible way that is made for user engagement and not reflection. 'The problem is that eating disorders and other mental health struggles deserve deeper discussion and consideration than a TikTok trend can offer,' Bellefleur explains. 'For example, the framework allows people to normalize and make light of serious eating disorder symptoms such as amenorrhea (loss of period), hair loss, malnourishment, or dehydration. What these videos rarely mention is that eating disorders can be fatal–and that there is help available. Recovery from an eating disorder is possible.' Bellefleur goes on to explain that social media is influential for teens because it offers a lot of stimuli for the brain to take in quickly, and it's natural for our brains to start internalizing the messages we are constantly exposed to. Adolescents are already navigating intense social comparison, and platforms like TikTok or Instagram magnify this by serving up endless stimuli about gym routines, diets, and beauty regimens. 'I have worked with many adolescent clients who get trapped in cycles of harmful comparison on social media,' she recalls. 'They start to believe that this is how they 'should' look or eat, and they begin to feel bad when their bodies or diets don't match. What social media doesn't show is whether that image is edited, what that person might be sacrificing to achieve their 'perfect' body, or how their obsession with a high-protein diet is affecting their mental health. Lara Zibarras, Psychologist and Eating Disorder Recovery Coach, agrees, adding that the trend celebrates wins that come with a 'small sacrifice'. 'On the surface, that might seem harmless, but when the so-called sacrifices are mental health issues, hair loss, missed periods, or disordered eating, it's no longer funny,' she says. 'Teens may scroll past these posts thinking, 'same,' without realizing how serious the behaviors actually are. It makes illness seem normal or even aspirational, which then blurs the line between concern and casualness.' She adds that the real impact of social media for teens is that it's tied to identity. 'Teens are figuring out who they are, and TikTok offers instant community, but sadly also the pressure to fit in. I've had clients tell me they didn't realize they had disordered eating because 'everyone else online was doing the same thing.' What Can Parents Do? Dr. Zibarras advises parents to pay attention to changes in their kids' eating habits, like avoiding foods they used to enjoy, skipping meals, pushing food around the plate, or not wanting to eat with the family. 'The most helpful thing parents can do is keep conversations open," she says. "Don't lecture! Instead ask how they're feeling, what they're seeing online, and whether anything is making them feel anxious about food or their body. Curiosity and connection will go much further than criticism.' Bellefleur suggests encouraging children to be critical of the media they consume by asking questions like: 'Is this lifestyle realistic?' 'Am I seeing the whole picture?' 'How does this content make me feel?' Malika Closson, M.D, Double Board Certified Adult & Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Consulting Psychiatrist for Freespira, thinks it's most important for parents to maintain open lines of communication. 'Staying informed about social media trends and creating an environment where there can be open discussion about these trends is important,' she recommends. She also says look for warning signs of mental health issues by asking the following: Does my child seem more isolated or withdrawn than usual? Are there big changes in their sleeping habits? Are they less interested in things they used to enjoy? Are their grades declining or have they been having other issues in school? It's Not All Doom and Gloom Despite the concern, Dr. Closson, highlights some positives about the trend. In her opinion, the 'I grieve different' trend is rooted in an attempt to feel less isolated and establish common ground with other young people by sharing experiences or emotions that tend to be universal. She notes that the desire to fit in and be accepted is not problematic in itself; what can become problematic is when there is an over-reliance on sharing via social media, versus getting the necessary help. 'It originated as a way for young people to share instances where something good on the surface can also have a downside, which is a universal theme that all of us encounter in life,' she says. For example, there's a TikTok of a teen celebrating being on summer break, but then shares the downside of having to work a full time job. Another young person shares their excitement over meeting a potential new love interest, only to reveal their anxiety about being vulnerable with someone else. 'These are things that many of us experience but might not necessarily share,' Dr. Closson continues. 'By sharing, it creates a sense in others that they are not alone, and also highlights the fact that many positive things in life can also have a negative side."
