Sarawak In Need Of More Skilled Workforce To Drive Solar Industry
GENERAL
SIBU, June 30 (Bernama) -- Sarawak must step up efforts to produce more skilled workers in solar energy in line with the state government's commitment to strengthening the renewable energy sector, said Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi.
The Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Minister said the move was crucial to meet the growing demand for skilled manpower, in line with the state's target of increasing power generation capacity to 10,000 megawatts (MW) by 2030 and 15,000 MW by 2035.
'At least 60 per cent of this amount will be contributed by renewable sources, including solar energy,' he told reporters after witnessing the presentation of the Accreditation Certificate to Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) by the Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Ministry (MUTS) here today.
MUTS Electricity Supply director Muhammad Randi Abdullah presented the certificate to UTS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid.
According to Julaihi, Sarawak had initiated the development of a floating solar power plant, including a 50 MW facility at the Batang Ai Dam, which began operations in December last year.
'This plant only utilises three per cent of the dam's surface and has the potential to be expanded to other locations such as Murum and Bakun. We have also identified several interested investors,' he said.
Julaihi said that the demand for skilled technicians and engineers in solar photovoltaic (PV) system design and installation would continue to rise, describing the collaboration between UTS and Entera Technology Academy as a proactive and strategic initiative.
'Training skilled workers is essential to developing the entire renewable energy ecosystem across Sarawak,' he said.
Julaihi said the initiative also supports the implementation of the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which positions renewable energy as a key sector in driving Sarawak towards becoming a high-income economy.

ReDI expands cashless society ecosystem nationwide
Armizan integrating with traders at the Papar general market during a walkabout on Tuesday. – Bernama photo PAPAR (July 1): The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry continues its commitment to strengthening the local retail sector through the Retail Digitalisation Initiative (ReDI). The implementation of ReDI aims to introduce digital-based business methods, particularly the use of e-wallets among traders, especially in rural areas, said Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali. 'To support this effort, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has organised the ReDI Borneo Roadshow 2025. This ten-day roadshow began on 26 June 2025 with its first location in Sematan, Sarawak, and is scheduled to conclude on 5 July 2025 in Tawau, Sabah, as the final stop,' he said in a statement on Tuesday. The organisation of the ReDI Borneo Roadshow 2025 is a proactive step by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry in its efforts to expose rural traders to operating digital-based businesses, he added. 'The main focus is on the use of e-wallet facilities in purchase transactions and creating a cashless society ecosystem nationwide, particularly in rural areas.' This ReDI initiative offers efficient financial management, business growth opportunities, a variety of payment options, as well as more effective inventory management, from which traders can benefit. This effort is carried out with the support and cooperation of strategic partners such as Bank Negara Malaysia, PayNet, and registered e-wallet providers including Touch 'n Go eWallet, GrabPay, ShopeePay, MAE Maybank, Boost and SPay Global. 'Since its launch on 27 August 2022 until 31 May 2025, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has assisted 22,368 traders nationwide to register with e-wallet platforms. This figure exceeds the target of 15,000 registered traders by 2025 set under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK-12), achieving over 100 per cent of the target. 'From 1 January to 31 May 2025 alone, the total number of traders registered under ReDI nationwide stood at 3,229. Of this number, 1,120 registered traders were from Sabah and 1,799 from Sarawak. As of the five days the ReDI Borneo Roadshow 2025 has been conducted, the total number of registered traders from Sabah and Sarawak is 3,708,' said Armizan.

Finance Minister II: RON95 subsidy rationalisation in final stages
The goal for the RON95 subsidy rationalisation is to ensure that the government plug leakages and that businesses and the wealthy contribute their fair share. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (July 1): The government is focusing on finalising the details of the RON95 subsidy rationalisation, which will begin in the second half of this year, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. He noted that just as it was with the diesel rationalisation, the goal for the RON95 subsidy rationalisation is to ensure that the government plug leakages and that businesses and the wealthy contribute their fair share. 'This is so that we have the fiscal strength to secure subsidies for the people who genuinely need them. 'The same careful approach applies to the expansion of Sales and Service Tax (SST) — it diversifies revenue and is part of prudent expenditure management,' he said in his keynote address at the Invest ASEAN-Malaysia Conference 2025 today. Amir Hamzah noted that the government's commitment to fiscal consolidation remained strong as the country had achieved a budget deficit-to-gross domestic product (GDP) ratio of 4.1 per cent last year, better than the official target of 4.3 per cent. He said that the government is now targeting a 3.8 per cent fiscal deficit for 2025 and is staying consistent with the Public Finance and Responsibility Act 2023 to reduce the deficit to three per cent in the medium term. 'This will be accomplished through revenue-enhancing measures, tax system efficiency and taxpayer compliance. 'This year we are doing the SST expansion and the RON95 subsidy rationalisation, and hopefully that will add a revenue base along the way,' he said, adding that the government is confident of getting the additional RM10 billion revenue from the SST expansion, despite recent additional exemptions. In the meantime, Amir Hamzah emphasised that Budget 2026 and the soon-to-be-tabled 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) will focus on being pragmatic, sensible and driving continuity in the nation's progress. 'While it is too early to share details, I can say that it will be yet another effort in securing our economic future, responding where necessary to current economic headwinds and building a fairer, more equitable society,' he said. He added that several other reforms are in the pipeline to support economic growth, build credibility and set governance examples. 'These include the judicial and institutional reform, fiscal and public sector reform, social protection and inclusivity reforms, and digital and innovation-led transformations. 'Current global volatility makes reforms more, not less, urgent. Institutional strengthening, fiscal discipline, and innovation capacity-building are complements to sustainable, resilient economic expansion that is capable of weathering future global disruptions,' he added. – Bernama Amir Hamzah Azizan fuel subsidy rationalisation lead RON95

Govt maintains credit scheme for over 96,000 rooftop solar users
PUTRAJAYA: The government will continue to allow over 96,000 existing rooftop solar users under the Malaysian Building Integrated Photovoltaic (MBIPV) and Net Energy Metering (NEM) schemes to earn electricity bill credits for the excess solar power they generate and export to the grid. In a statement on Tuesday (July 1), the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (Petra) said the continuation of the solar credit scheme aligns with the implementation of a new electricity tariff structure, effective today, that ensures fairness and transparency. Under the updated framework, these credits will differ slightly based on which programme users are enrolled in, and for how long their systems have been active. At present, there are over 82,000 solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with a combined capacity of 1.7 gigawatts (GW) in operation, with another 14,000 systems (595 megawatts) under development. The ministry noted that MBIPV users will receive credits for energy, network and capacity use for five more years, until Dec 31, 2030, while NEM 1.0 users will continue earning credits based on the displaced cost (the cost the utility avoids when solar energy replaces electricity from the grid) for ten years, until Dec 31, 2035. Meanwhile, NEM 2.0 and 3.0 users will receive similar credits for ten years from the date their solar system was installed. It added that incentive rates and calculations will be adjusted as needed to ensure the system remains fair for all electricity users and to provide equitable incentives to eligible MBIPV and NEM users, including energy efficiency rebates or other related benefits. To standardise how credits are applied across all rooftop solar programmes, the 'settlement period' or the time frame for calculating and applying these credits, will now be fixed at 12 months, replacing the previously varied timeframes. For users whose original credit period has ended, Petra said they have the option to switch to other ongoing solar initiatives, such as the Solar for Self-Consumption (SelCo) programme or the Community Renewable Energy Aggregation Mechanism (CREAM). They may also install energy storage systems or join any new solar schemes the government introduces, it said. With the conclusion of the NEM programme on June 30, rooftop solar installations will now continue under the improved SelCo programme, which allows for larger system sizes and more flexible installation setups, following earlier announcements by the government.- Bernama
